I agree that walking off in a huff once in while is a satisfying thing! In this case I was trying to get the Larry Sanders package for $5 less than Deepdiscount's regular price, and there's no sales tax in Oregon (duh, cause we're too dumb to do math here.) And it was kind of fun to put on an act - the befuddled "I don't understand why I'm not in the computer" middle-aged man.

Sex Pistols reuniting for 30th anniversary gig

You are a depraved and sick man. -
So I printed this out and walked over to the store. They insisted that I needed a Border card to use it and then tried to look me up by my email address. So I walked out empty handed. That's it for me. I never had that happen before and am through with Borders once I use up a couple of gift cards. Too many companies already have my email address and I get too much spam as it is. Plus, their prices suck. I ran into the Borders coupon police for the first time too. They asked for my card and I said I didn't have it on me. They asked for a phone # and I said I didn't provide it on the application (which was technically true, since I didn't apply.) They then asked for an email address. I gave them my spam address, knowing full well as I didn't have a card it wouldn't turn up. "Hmm, not there, is there another email address?" So I gave them a made up Yahoo one. "No...hmm..." I continued to act befuddled. Finally the checker issued my a rewards card tied to the original spam address without me providing any other info. Get yourself a spam address (I use Excite) for rebates, warranties, relatives who forward jokes (actually I have a separate one for those) etc. etc. I agree their prices suck, but they don't on those rare days when the coupons are > 35% off. I'm guessing they've started tying the coupons to the cards to prevent people from using the coupons multiple times.

Actually Britton has better numbers last year and the brief bit he's pitched this year. Much lower batting average vs. him, and WHIP & ERA is better than Farnsworth too. I'd think getting the kid some pressure time and not abusing the rest of the pen wasn't a bad idea, it just didn't work.

Hope it's not that they find out he's as old as he looks in the face.

Harper Lee. Wait. Never mind, that was my mom's copy. -
See the 1st post. Some on the 11th, some on the 25th. From the CDUNIVERSE page - Scheduled to release Tuesday, September 18, 2007 Place your order today and be one of the first to receive this product when it arrives. Oh sorry. When I placed my pre-order at CDU (along with some Jazz Icons dvds) a few days ago it still had the 11th. Sounds like it's been delayed a week then.

Today I picked up a $10.46 used copy of Duke Ellington's Jan. 1943 Carnegie Hall Concert which introduced "Black, Brown, and Beige."

I've combined those 2 games from time to time myself. "The game is never over when the wind is blowing out at Wrigley." While we don't yet if Clemens' career is over due to an elbow tear, Nolan Ryan's elbow tore in a game against the Mariners as well when he was 1 year older than Roger. <Cue Twilight Zone theme.> Oh yeah, as Soulstation never answered the question, "The Whale," aka Rick "The Pride of Camp Point, IL" Reuschel is one of the 2 pitchers who gave up home runs to Hank Aaron and He-Who-Shall-Remain-Nameless-As-He-Has-His-Own-Special-Thread.

In that one (5-17-79) the Phils "let" the Cubs score 7 in the 5th when they were up 21-9. Tug McGraw entered the game in the 5th! He was terrible that year (this game didn't help ) , but still led the team in saves. Info above provided by Retrosheet.

Not even against a Pitchback with a tennis ball when he was 11? Boy that is something. Well you've got a mighty nice pitching problem to have, trying to figure out what to do with good arms, I tell you what. Regarding the M's losing streak, it feels like that little-boy-enthusiastic-fan-with-the-sense-of-wonder that I had inside of me for the past month has like a balloon been utterly deflated. Oh I know it's not over, but it's been tough to go from 1 game back of the Angels to this in a week. For weeks the stat-knowing brain knew that they shouldn't be winning like they have been, but it was getting to be "You Gotta Believe" and all those other underdog kind of teams baseball throws at you every so often. That feeling is gone, unless they're just trying to create more adversity to make the ultimate victory all the more unbelievable. (STOP IT STOP IT STOP IT!, they'll rip yer heart out man, try to be logical about this.)

I noticed yesterday that our public library has the Liebman, as well as the Mulligan Select. I know they have others that I already have, like the Weston & Moncur. Very nice way to "try to before you buy," or just let the library copy be yours to check out as needed (provided the need is not great.) I have been on the fence about the Liebman as well, so one of these days I'll have to check it out (or at least part of it, as they break it up for lending purposes) and see if it makes it onto the next Mosaic order.

As Jim said he's a "creation" and Clem has said so in a few responses. There are times when I think I have his (uh, the "creator's) age pinned down, mainly based on his punk music preferences. 39 1/2! Wait...make that 42. Or is it....Whereas with he's making country or rootsy recs he comes across another decade older some of the time, or at least when he's on the road. But after seeing what all he likes in the classical realm I've come to the conclusion that I'd better add another 100 years to his age. But he's a young 140-something! Which made the Gaelic Park ref all the more funny, or to me as I know someone who was there. He knows his Deadspeak (too) and it was a great reference to drop. Though you never know, he easily could have been there at some age between 1 and 104. (Actually I think he's referenced this before, and may have also mentioned the trains in background , though my mind could be tricking me again.)

He's always had a folkie side to him. It figures T-Bone Burnett would be involved.
-
Not a chance that it happens. He's thrown 140 innings, and like most intelligent organizations, they keep a tight rein on how many innings a young pitcher pitches. I don't know, Maddux, Glavine, Smoltz all pitched more innings at 22, and no permanent damage in the lot to show for it. Of course old-timers like Carlton, Kaat pitched more too (and I stopped looking at that point, since we all know modern pitchers are sissies. ) But yeah, it depends what he's used to I guess, and all that involves coddling the modern pitcher. And there will be playoff innings too, something the young Braves didn't face back then, nor Maddux (though very soon for all.) Sometimes moving kid starters to the pen can mess 'em up too. Young pitchers - they're like high-maintenance women!

So that's what happened to Up With People. -
Yes indeed. The same thing happened at home vs. the Angels. Bases loaded, 2 outs in the 8th, Vlad at the plate, and he brings in White. Bam Bam off course destroys the pitch and the Angels put it out of reach. Oh to be able to flush away that stupid mentality brought about by La Russa in the days of Eck, where you only use the closer with a lead at the top of the 9th. Grumble grumble grumble (all baseball writers who didn't vote for Gossage for the Hall of Fame should be taken aside after one of these situations and have it explained to them, since apparently they're too young to remember, exactly why the Goose was so valuable.) White's ridiculous colored facial hair had me hankerin' for an orange creamsicle after his appearance though.

If she had been wearing Mariner shorts you would have been all set.

Sorry to hear this. Also sorry to hear that listening to a shitload of jazz does not prevent cancer. I had my hopes.
-
I don't know the facts of this game, but how can you say that a starter pitched well when he is taken out with a huge lead? He'd thrown 89 pitches (56 for strikes) and had a 14-3 lead when they took him out. It's a "compliment" not to waste him or wear him down with such a lead. Less wear & tear on Gabbard for his next start.

Yeah, I did a comparison to Webb, and as fine a season as Webb is having it's not close. Being a stathead smartass I thought "well maybe Peavy is just benefiting from Petco Park." No-siree, his road ERA is like Bob Gibson '68. Crazy crazy wicked stuff. Don't be so down, you're wild card right now aren't ya? You've seen enough of the wild card age to know that (I sound like a damn promotion) once the playoffs start the regular season records don't matter. There have been so many wild card World Series teams, and throw in last year's Cards I wouldn't sweat being the 4th best team in the worst league if that's how it happens.

It's part 3 of the 3 conditions. This must have been the easiest 3 inning save in history. The rule: The official scorer shall credit a pitcher with a save when such pitcher meets all four of the following conditions: (1) He is the finishing pitcher in a game won by his team; (2) He is not the winning pitcher; (3) He is credited with at least a third of an inning pitched; and (4) He satisfies one of the following conditions: (a) He enters the game with a lead of no more than three runs and pitches at least one inning; (b) He enters the game, regardless of the count, with the potential tying run either on base, or at bat or on deck (that is, the potential tying run is either already on base or is one of the first two batters he faces); or © He pitches for at least three innings. If the pitcher surrenders the lead at any point, he cannot get a save, but he may be credited as the winning pitcher if his team comes back to win. No more than one save may be credited in each game.

I'm so sorry to hear about that. It's so damn tough to go through. That goes for you too Van. Time to get offline and spend some time with my cat.

Man, it has been something else. The games I've been tuning into it'll be the 7th inning, or there will be 2 out and a man on in the 6th, and they get it done. Ibanez hasn't homered in forever, but does so with men on. Sexson gets a hit when it's needed, Betancourt hits a grand slam. "Timely hitting" is such a cliche, but I'll be damned as so often they're getting it. I sure didn't expect it this year, and the numbers look ugly, the starting pitching is a bit scary, but hell, I'm enjoying this head scratching team like few others in my lifetime. Knock those Halos outta there!
