I've been wracking my pee brain trying to remember, cause I know I've bumped into a couple that were very good. Can't recall which movies, but Werner Herzog commentaries are always worth hearing. So there ya go! I bought the Criterion Life Of Brian in part because it had multiple commentaries. Cleese & someone on one side, Palin & so-and-so on the other. Is there even a third one? (I'm too lazy to check.) Perhaps my expectations were too high, but from what I've heard so far they aren't "all that."

I was thinking that many pages ago. Lessee, I'll volunteer and make it easy for you. The only things worse than Bonds' giant head are Anita O'Day & motorcycles, or Anita O'Day on a motorcycle, you fat-headed moose. Poking a moose with a sharp stick is dangerous, I'd better run. Lock 'er up.

I've seen this happen to local anchors who have worked for 10 to 25 years, hell, even one for 40, and also Bob Schieffer seemed to get the giggles every so often when he was on CBS. You apologize and move on. If the offended parties can't forgive then have a nice life holding a grudge. Now if it happens to this guy once a week during the more tragic stories, then sure, he isn't cut out for it. The more you're on the air the more likely this sort of thing can happen, and if people are so uptight that they can't handle it, then stick to bloody newpapers.

He's not laughing about it. He's got a case of the giggles. It happens to the best of us, and it often happens at the worst possible times. The worst thing about a case of the giggles is that the more you try to stop, the harder you want to laugh. I'm sure he got in trouble, but he doesn't deserve to be canned over it. In junior high biology class a film was being shown and for some reason there was footage of white furry baby seals getting clubbed to death. I can't recall if it was some sort of defensive mechanism on my part regarding the footage, some joking going on with another classmate, or a combination of the 2, but I got a case of the giggles that I could not suppress. Quite a few girls in the class thought I was a dangerous psycho after that, though blurting out "sorry" in-between the giggles kept it from being all of them. Same thing happened to a lesser extent and I was able to do a better job of suppressing it, though it was more difficult for a cousin of mine during my granny's funeral. This was mainly because the doofus minister presiding over the service was wearing a ugly powder blue suit right and mentioned how the dearly departed had been away from the flock for 35 years. With the likes of him in charge it was easy to see why!

I still think the third thread is the one that started it all. . . it certainly was the first place I noticed the sale, and I kept reading that thread. . . look at posts 13-15. . . mgraham's post 15 was the one that started me on the blowout sale. The Warning Shot from Chuck came much earlier than the Blowout Sale though. Chuck's warning came on Dec. 1, 2004, whereas the great Blowout Sale was 2006. They're admitting to a data entry error and they cancelled all orders. I got a 10% off a box set coupon good until October. 10% off of their prices isn't a very good deal, but hey, it's the thought that counts.

Sweet dreams were made of this..... Even though it didn't work, it added a bit of excitement to the afternoon and no real disappointment as I didn't really expect it to go thru. Also got me thinking about Dylan and playing a little too.

Sheeeeeeeeesh! Thanks Ray! Biograph was one I never got around to either (though 20+ years ago I traded for a tape off an acetate of highlights before its release.) I picked up Collection too for a few songs I don't have along with getting some others on CD that I just have on vinyl. Already had the Bootleg Series 1-3 but bought one as a gift. Don't know who for yet, but I can figure that out later! Total cost $5.71, so the shipping charges are very reasonable as well. *edit - I goofed on what I thought "The Collection" was. It's Blonde On Blonde, Blood On The Tracks & Infidels packaged together. Oh well, another gift for the niece & nephew, who are discovering "the classics."

I was hoping that the Venuti-Lang would be on sale. I had no reason to expect it to be, other than last year's interesting mix of Bix, Stitt, etc. that were marked down. I may get it yet by Christmas or before. However I've picked up an Jordi Savall SACD habit (THANKS CLAUDE!) and I haven't been this excited about something new (if 400+ year old music can be "new" ) in a long time. So Mosaic has some competition!
-
Maybe then I wouldn't skip "Moby Dick*." *I've heard more than my share in my youth that I've stored them up.

So the solution to the problem of fast & easy money in the past is to make money fast & easy again? Cramer just didn't want to see his investment bank buddies lose their bonuses. Moose, I'm with ya! Teach compounding, and the importance of being on the right side of it. And don't just teach it once, give reminder/refreshers every year. Toss in a few important financial equations, and again give refreshers. And try to some probability too. Actually a little of all of this does get touched on, or was with me in high school. But too often one just learns this stuff for a test and forgets it. Better to try to give a refresher for a few days or a week each year from junior high thru high school. (Yeah I know, at the expense of what?)

Help My Wife and I Eat Better and Lose Weight
Quincy replied to Dan Gould's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Can't emphasize the exercise part enough. And as I believe (sorry if I'm wrong) because of your voice work, or the waiting around part, you have time to do some. It's even better if you can devote closer to 90 minutes a day (5 times a week for me) than 60, and if your only excuse is boredom than that's not a good one (for the next few months at least.) Working your way up to 100 sit ups a day is something you can do for free at home. And hey, if you can handle more, go for it. Push ups are also free. Put on some music and go to it. Got an old bike around the house you're not riding? You can get a bike trainer for $120 or less (maybe just $80) that will turn a regular bike into a stationary one. I bought one made by Blackburn. You can read magazines (preferably ones that only you read, unless dried out sweat droplet damage doesn't bug her) when you ride away for 40 minutes or an hour or more. I now get through more of the Economist thanks to stationary riding. Intensive Nerf basketball can be an aerobic workout that throws in some childlike fun. Also play with the dog in a way that forces you to move. You gotta move! And your dog will get something out of this too. Try to work in some kind of weight training as it burns calories after you've finished for awhile (sort of like how a chicken out of the oven keeps on cooking.) If you had a cat instead of a dog I'd suggest using the 14 and/or 20 lb. cat litter plastic containers as something to work with. (Can you tell I'm a cheap S.O.B.?) And aside from assisting in weight loss, exercise can also allow for the *occasional* dietary sin or two. Just don't make that a habit as you're trying to lose weight. I've never been a gym rat, in fact tend to hate the whole smelly scene. But losing weight AND exercising is the best way, cause you'll feel better, be lighter in your step by adding some muscle to go with the lost fat. And if gyms aren't your thing, there's still quite a bit one can do at home without a huge investment in equipment. (Used sporting goods shops are places to check out for weights & stuff too, since so many people give up.) A Mosaic set (or some musical goodie) can be a great carrot for meeting a challenging goal. If money is tighter, then hold a smaller purchase that you'd like to get hostage until you lose some weight. But really, I think it's better to give yourself a reward for improving your health. Oh yes, one more thing. Maybe you already have been, but weigh yourself every day and keep track (computer calendar works.) Don't let the every day part scare you, as you may go a week without losing a pound. Don't let gaining 2 frustrate you. But it's just to be aware, and try to make sense of what you're eating, how much you're exercising, and how it effects the weight. And uh, you might want to be consistent about weighing yourself regarding how full you bowels are, and whether you've peed or not. A pint's a pound, so you know, it adds up. -
From the "review" - "I just got this (6 disc) boxed set as an advance of its September release two hours ago, have not gotten through half of it yet..."

Hmm, maybe this means that reissues might be on the way after all. Even before we all die of old age.

I can't stand the guy. I've watched him go from a hyperactive columnist to a hyperactive tv personality. Granted I don't even have cable but I would guess as with all of these guys, very little applies to the individual investor, unless you're willing to research a recommendation on your own and wait many months as the stock may move unreasonably because it's been paraded by some guru before millions of viewers. And lookee lookee, here we on a Monday and Wamu (which he mentioned he wouldn't buy for the yield) went up 5.55% (the S&P 500 did 2.42%), Goldman Sachs up 4.5%, etc. etc. Just another day, la de da, maybe tomorrow it'll go down so he can throw a another temper tantrum. Hell, I'd be in favor of raising rates if it caused his frickin' head to explode LIVE on tv. If it happens somebody youtube it for me.

Wishing all the best for you & your wife.

"Return" to Abaco Island, Bahamas

Fascinating travelogue and personal remembrances. Thanks for sharing. -
What the.... did the Giants hire John Hart or something? That sounds like the kind of move the Rangers are notorious for! Sorry to hear this! I swear I saw one of the news services refer to him as "aging pitcher." The guy turns 33 next week! I suppose it's all in how you play, but don't you think you need to be closer to 37 to be "aging." Sheeeeesh.

Lost in the death reports today is another one, Bill Robinson. Best known as a Phillie & a Pirate (and appropriately enough he was born in PA), and he got a ring with the '79 Pirates and had a classic power hitting platoon year for them (paired with John Milner.) He actually started with the Braves and was a Yankee from '67-'69, not a good era to be a Yankee. He also picked up a World Series ring with the '86 Mets as their hitting coach. I always managed to get his card, even in those years where I just bought a dozen packs. He was a pretty tough out (especially if you were a lefty) in the mid-70s.

Thanks for adding the rainbow picture last. Otherwise I couldn't help thinking about how I had to mow the lawn, and what a pathetic job I do compared to those who cut the grass at Busch. Great pictures of course, and thank you so much for sharing. Having watched Lou Piniella's head almost explode several times earlier this season, it's something else to see the Cubs getting so close. I hope that every 25 years thing keeps working for Milwaukee though.

Tom Snyder Dies: Newsman Tom Snyder Dead At 71
Quincy replied to BERIGAN's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
After I graduated from high school in '81 he interviewed The Clash & Charles Manson within a week of each other in June. Summer was not going to be boring. More than half the fun of watching him was how weirdly wound up he was, waiting for a screw up, and of course the laugh that Ackroyd imitated so well. He did an interview with Grace Slick in the final week of his show that was hilarious. For all his faults, I'd rather have him on late at night than what's out there now. -
Sports Illustrated published a long (and well-written) profile of Walsh earlier this year (added: looks like 6 Mar 2007). That was the first I heard of his illness. It was somewhat of a valedictory article, and I got the feeling there wasn't much time left... Yup. It's worth a read. Maybe the site will provide access to the article in tribute (though I don't know if they'll do that.) The Grim Reaper has been busy today.

"Intentional pass"??? Why waste 3 pitches when you can achieve the same result by plunking him with one??* *see Drysdale, Don. And to bring it full circle, Hank Aaron hit more home runs off of Drysdale (17) than any other in his career. Without wearing a big ass elbow guard either.

The typo makes the statement! Sorry, just love how those things happen. Good luck in your pursuit!

We've got to face the facts that sometimes "bad" guys break records: witness Pete Rose. At the time Pete broke the record he was not a convicted gambler. Plus the man whose record he broke was a psychotic racist, so even if Pete's crimes had been known it would have been an upgrade.
