  1. No, but he averaged 40 per 162 games. 20th lifetime in HR per AB. His 462 is 30th on the total HR list. Hardly an example that helps your case.
  2. Although if you remember McGwire's record breaker #62, it was more like a check swing that barely cleared the LF wall. Which goes to show what extra muscle will do for ya...though of course we all know muscle mass doesn't help you hit home runs.
  3. Thank you GoodSpeak, I just added him to my 2 fantasy teams before anyone else got him. His numbers look impressive, and I'm betting he'll work out. Didn't you say the other day why can't the Giants get pitching & hitting on the same team. If this kid works out you could have yourself one heck of a rotation.
  4. The story of him going to Harlem as a 7th grader was priceless. I'll butcher it & leave out important details, but he asks a taxi driver to take him to Harlem (as in "Harlem," no club mentioned) as he imagined music was everywhere, that people were singing, dancing & playing in the streets. The taxi driver suggests "The Plantation" and takes him there. Because of Ahmet's jazz knowledge people assume he's older than he is (he's just in the 7th grade, or about 12 or 13 years old.) The manager instructs a showgirl to share his booth and he's served drinks. After the show he ends up at a party and James P. Johnson is playing piano. Sidney Bechet is there too, and sees him drinking scotch & soda that had been handed to him (and Ahmet's just in the 7th grade!) and says "You're too young to be drinking that! Here, smoke this!" The Mick & Ahmet segments mostly involved exchanging stories (such as the one above) and Mick obviously had high respect & much love for the man. I'd think even those who don't like Mick may end up disliking him less here. The show crashed logarithmically in the home stretch with Phil Collins, Bette and Kid Rock. But for the first 2/3rds there were many good moments.

Hope you're able to see him. And if you do, give your impressions here.

: The Art of Jazz Celebration is a five-day celebration of the best in jazz performance and education. With a unique array of jazz concerts, gathering the legends of today and stars of tomorrow, the festival features dozens of events, including workshops, "Jazz on Film" presentations, family matinee concerts, dance performances, photography exhibits and more. There will be two tribute concerts featuring both a Canadian and an international jazz artist. On Friday, June 1, legendary Canadian composer and trumpeter Kenny Wheeler will appear in concert along with fellow jazz luminaries, bassist and composer Dave Holland, trombonist, composer and arranger Bob Brookmeyer, saxophone legend Lee Konitz, international drum virtuoso Joe La Barbara, multi-instrumentalist, composer and arranger Don Thompson (on piano, vibraphone and bass) and the superb and compelling jazz vocalist (and long-time creative associate of Kenny Wheeler), Norma Winstone. The second tribute concert will take place on Sunday, June 3rd, "Art of Jazz 2007" will honour the international jazz vocal icon (and virtual inventor of "vocalese"), Jon Hendricks. He will take the stage with his latest performing ensemble, "Lambert, Hendricks & Ross Redux" – a tribute in itself to Hendricks' seminal jazz vocal group that pushed all of the boundaries, and featured (along with Hendricks) the late Dave Lambert and the always incredible singer and actress, Annie Ross. 7. The only autographs I collect are organissimo ones.
  8. 1 3rd place vote. Well as coach he did have to overcome all of those boneheaded moves by the G.M.
  9. $3.39 in Eugene OR, and it's been at that for a few weeks. Lucky me I mainly walk or ride my bike. Therefore I can easily say "shucks, compared to most of the world it's still cheap."
  10. grab that gideons in the bedside table at the Super 8 and get wit tellin' your Peter from your Paul. You mean Paul wasn't Robocop? I thought he wanted to be on Setting Sons (Some of those reviews for The Gift rival those of Robocop III, which didn't even have Weller Paul or Peter but instead Hal Hartley's boy Robert Burke, who deserved a payday.)
  11. Give the man some fuckin' credit. He didn't play great during Q's 1-3 1/2, but when he had to do it, Dirk stepped up. 2 more games still, but 1 game at a time.
  12. I love this one, especially the way it opens. Instantly recognizable too. So thick, dense and funky. A few years ago a friend was very excited about a low quality '74 Miles boot he had gotten. He lent it to me, and like that old game show I could name the show within 3 notes. I had to break the news to him that he already owned it in finer sounding form. I agree with Mr. Larsen - this one should have been titled Live-Evil. It sure doesn't sound like it was played at Carnegie Hall.
  13. Given his political leanings my guess is he used Hunt's, not Heinz. *Better add a here too. I don't think he used catsup or ketchup, though I do find the hubbub hilarious.
  14. This was to go in the "Your Claim To Fame" thread, but maybe it'd be better to post it here. More details than you want to know provided by the internet. My claim to fame (ignoring "brushes with greatness") is I've (sort of) witnessed the birth of 2 franchises. I was sick from school on April 7, 1977, but not too sick to grab an AM radio and tune into the Toronto Blue Jays first game. It snowed, Harry Carry announced and Doug Ault hit 2 home runs. I figured he'd go on to be a franchise cornerstone and All-Star. Then on June 16th of '92 the first game by the Colorado Rockies organization was going to be played 115 miles away in Bend in a minor-league short season A game vs. the Boise Hawks. Seemed like a great excuse to head to the mountains with some friends and witness baseball history, or some silly semblance thereof. Here's why the Rockies have sucked so as a franchise. The ceremonial first pitch battery was the CFO from Denver and some other suit/accountant type. Boo. Nice little ballpark with a view of the mountains, and after seeing where players were hitting the balls I started to worry that I may have parked the car within range. (I had but lucky me no "hits," though a ball went through the windshield of a car just 4 away from mine.) The home team was down 4-1 in the bottom of the 8th when catcher Will Scalzitti hit a grand slam, and the Rockies won it 6-4. (I think the franchise used all of its miracle mojo that night.) The Colorado Rockies didn't start playing until the next year, so this was the first game in the franchise history. I was most impressed by the tall RF Angel Echevarria and his 7 year career eerily equals almost a full season. If you forget his cozy home park for most of those at bats he even looks pretty good. 2 other future major leaguers in the park were Quinton McCracken and John Thomson but neither played, or at least Quinton didn't start. For short-season class A games, 3 future major leaguers (no matter what kind of career they have) is about the limit.
  15. Glad you had great day!
  16. Of course there's a blog devoted to the subject. Baseball's Steroid Era
  17. Because to be competitive in major league baseball shouldn't mean one has to risk enlarged breasts, anger issues, shrunken nuts, liver cancer, etc. to keep up with the Joneses. Not that Andruw or Chipper are doping...
  18. Actually one or the other does help you see better (I've forgotten which). And he does. Based on what he was doing by '98 or '00 so I was ready to place him in LF on my All-Time team. Yes, because of his speed & defense even ahead of Ted Williams. (Though I wouldn't argue someone picking Williams instead, or Rickey Henderson.) And he didn't need to hit 700 homers to be in the argument for greatest player ever. Had he stayed clean he would have gotten a good honest 600-something. But it's pretty damn obvious he didn't stay clean. And that's what muddies it all for those of us who aren't Giant fans in denial. He's great but he cheated, and it's like an A student cheating - it seems so unnecessary. He was already great, but it wasn't enough. He was, or is so damn petty he couldn't handle the other cheaters (Sosa & McGwire) getting more attention. And not all of those who have put up great numbers are suspects though. I can't recall any rumors about Ken Griffey Jr. or Manny doing 'roids, just to name 2 future hall of famers.
  19. Non-steroids day...? I wasn't aware there was any proof to that effect. Besides, he's 42 years old and with bad knees. Anybody would slow done at that point. And their foot size would go from 10 1/2 to 13, and hat size increase despite the loss of hair. Rather than just 'roids, HGH is the factor here. Yes I agree, pre-pharmacology Bonds was a more exciting player due to a deadly power & speed blend.
  20. Try Googling words like: vintage speaker repair recone restoration (brand).
  21. Weird, I had the same problem start up last night. It's a maddening click-intensive problem. Thanks to all who posted here about the fix.
  22. While it doesn't look good, you can more optimistically rephrase that as "2 teams since 2000 have made the playoffs with similar poor starts." The expanded playoffs help your chances, unfortunately for Phillies fans the Mets & Braves seem to be better teams in the division and more likely to grab the wild-card. Meanwhile the dismal Mariners are under .400 but just 2 games out of 1st in the AL West.
  23. Have a Kodachrome day...well, the digital equivalent (or better!) at least. Happy Birthday!
  24. I already had the JSP Bix/Tram box remastered by John R.T. Davies so I stalled on buying it until last August's sale. I'm so happy that I bought it! I return to it often. While there are other strategies for buying Bix (namely the Bix Restored series, which I do not own - yet ), I'm also a fan of Teagarden, so I greatly enjoy his inclusion. Maybe I'm more used to the music of this period now, but honestly there aren't many vocals that annoy me on this set. Highly recommended. Frankly, I dig Teagarden's vocals. Oh I do too! I was responding to J.A.W.'s comment, but I'm certain he was referring to the vocals not sung by Teagarden.
