  1. I'm not surprised about controversy around the book's content. He didn't seem to pull any punches. I'm neither a bass player or from Detroit but I enjoyed reading about his experiences of growing up which isn't always the case for me and biographies of musicians. He does come across as being a little bitter at times but growing up when he did and knowing that he probably wouldn't make it in the classical world as a black musician I can understand why. At least he finally got to do some classical recordings. One of my favorite stories was about the Miles Quintet making a pact to play "anti music" during the stent at The Plugged Nickel. No wonder that music sounds so amazing to me. I recently purchased Entre Amigos w/Rosa Passos that he did and really love it. I had no idea it was even out there.
  2. There have been a few previous threads on Carter, with recommendations for listening, etc. I either missed that thread or I missed any posts on this book. I can see it's not a new book but it's not that old either and it was new to me. It was a breath of fresh air after just finishing the recently published book on Randy Weston.
  3. There's a great one by Cannonball Adderley on Emarcy titled Sophisticated Swing. I don't know how to post pic's so if someone could be so kind....
  4. Because it's a movie. I've never seen the film but now I'm also interested in seeing it.
  5. I have a Vol.1 DG, Lexington Ave. pressing and feel the same way. Far from audiophile sound but the peformances are great of course. I find myself spinning the RVG remasered cds more often than the record though. Sort of related, I recently bought the Bird & Diz album on Verve (master edition cd from '97) and I was floored by the sound quality of Monk's piano. It's one of the best "sounding" albums of Monk's playing I've ever heard.
  6. Isn't his father or uncle a well known N.O. musician?
  7. I'll pile on for the recomendation for Line On Love. I have an older trio recording called The Welcome on the Sound Aspects label w/Anthony Cox (b) and Pheeroan AkLaff (d) that I really like. The last time I saw him was when he toured with Andrew Hill a year or so before Hill passed.
  8. The silence on this thread is deafening. Is there no interest in this book or the subject matter?
  9. Thanks for that.
  10. Yeah, I love Oracle. I had no idea it was going for that much money these days. The Essence is also great. I'm a Hank Jones fan too. I have a number of Blue Notes that I cherish and if I had to pick one it would be Open Sesame by Freddie Hubbard as far as value and my love for the music goes. It's just a blistering performance by Freddie and everyone else.
  11. A strong second from my quarter -- tremendous playing. Tete, Niels-Henning, Tootie Heath. The double-time, "Coltrane Changes" version of "Body and Soul" is the highlight for me. This clip merges parts of "Giant Steps," "Body and Soul" and "Hot House" from the record: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FTTRxczyCMM The other record I return to is a fantastic duo side with George Coleman -- especially for an epic version of "Sophisticated Lady." http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001H4N3S4/ref=dm_mu_dp_trk6 I'm also a big fan of his solo playing, including a lovely recording of Catalan Folk Songs. Otherwise, I would note that I've heard any number of his records in which he sounded on automatic pilot. He always sounds good but not necessarily inspired, at least to my ears. But those listed above are dynamite. I came here to sing the praises of the duo album with George Coleman but I see I'm too late.
  12. if you'll humor me to continue the metaphor: if pimps are a problem, then perhaps get rid of the brothel? im not a spambot; i have a pretty sweet record that (apparently) has value to many jazz collectors. it's not like i started a discussion thread about bill evans in your general discussion forum and then bombed you all with a "oh by the way check my ebay auction" post. i might be a pimp, but im not a shady pimp. Pimps work in the street, not brothels (so I hear).
  13. This was my thoughts too. The piano sound in particlar has not been good on Riverside lps.
  14. I was sooo disappointed when I got that email. I would have gone to see it that day but I had to work. I'm going to look at the Musser 45 tomorrow or Thursday. The person selling it is upgrading and his price is firm at $1900.
  15. I'm sad I missed him in San Francisco a while back but I'm seriously thinking of going to see him in Portland in February.
  16. Someone bought the Deagan yesterday. I'm gutted. I was thinking about that Deagan last night as I fell asleep, looking forward to seeing it today and checked my emails to discover the bad news.
  17. Thanks guys for the responses. The vibes will not leave the house much if at all so portability is not an issue. My gut feeling was correct about the Deagan. I'm going to look at the Musser but my heart is already thinking Aurora! It belonged to a man who passed a way recently I believe because the son is selling it and it's being stored at a church in the meantime. The son is a musician too but he doesn't play vibes. There's only a $300 difference between the Deagan and the Musser and the Musser is a firm price too (so he says). For that difference alone I would take the better instrument. I discovered that website too (yesterday) but thanks for mentioning it. If I get this Deagan, I plan on joining. I'm losing a piano but I'm pretty excited about the prospect of owning a vibraphone. Oh and I read about the gel filled dampners so although I don't know much yet I can see why that would be an improvement.
  18. Paul Horn did one on Cleopatra didn't he? I have it at home but I'm having a TIA and I can't remember if it's Cleopatra or another version of Lawrence of Arabia. That Here's Love looks great to me too. I've never seen or heard of it.
  19. Didn't see this one mentioned but I didn't check every post to be honest. Entre Amigos by Rosa Passos & Ron Carter on the Chesky label. It's mostly guitar/bass/drums with a little sax and flute. Except for Carter and the reed player Billy Drewes, the musicians are Brazilian so it's very authentic sounding. Passos has a beautiful voice, Ron Carter is superb throughout and the recording reminds me of Joao Gilberto circa 1959. Released in 2003, I just became aware of it while reading the bio on Carter.
  20. There are two vibraphones for sale in my area, a Deagan model #1000 and a Musser Model 45. The former is going for $2200, the latter $1900. I've never played vibes before but I'd like to learn. I know next to nothing about them except for a little reading on the 'net yesterday. Any pointers on what to look for, like how to tell if the felt is worn or needing replacement sooner than later, etc. I know the Deagan was top of the line in its day. It was owned by someone who has passed away. I'm going to see it Sunday. I haven't contacted the owner of the Musser yet.
  21. Insensatez - Rosa Passos & Ron Carter Just got the album yesterday and it floored me. It reminded me so much of those late 50's recordings of Joao Gilberto.
  22. Freddie Hubbard - Here to Stay (Music Matters reissue) Superb sound on a great album.
  23. I just finished reading the book by Dan Ouellette and I really liked it. It was very informative, well written and organized and I feel like I got a good take on Mr. Carter. For someone who's been on so many albums I own it was nice to read a little background on the man behind the bass. Recomended.
  24. East Meets West - Ahmed Abdul-Malik reissue One of three lps I bought by him yesterday.
  25. Thanks for that. I appreciate another man's opinion. If I find a copy at the right time and right price I might pick it up. I'm not the biggest fan of jazz and strings but I do have a few that I like to listen to from time to time.
