What live music are you going to see tonight?
six string replied to mikeweil's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
I saw this group last week and really enjoyed it overall. Dave Holland's bass was not easily heard though. I turned his amp up after the first song but it was never really loud enough when everyone was playing and that was a real shame as I love the tone he gets from his bass. Also he was playing a new instrument I'd never seen before. The lower half of the body of the bass was a little truncated so it looked a littl odd. I don't know if the newness of the instrument had anything to do with the volume level. I kept waiting for the soundman to do something about it and I wanted to yell out that I couldn't hear him very well. I was ten rows from the stage and dead center so it shouldn't have been an issue. The only other quibble is the lack of solos from Jason Moran. Potter was the dominant soloist that night and though he's a fine player I find his solos a little predictable and Moran's voice would have been a welcome relief. Jason also played the Fender Rhodes which added a nice color to the program. They played compositions by everyonen in the band including Eric Harland. Eric's drumming was nothing short of fantastic and perfect at every moment. Just a real superb musician at the top of his game. -

I missed his show in my neighborhood last week because of another event I couldn't bale from but this Saturday I'll be going to the same venue to hear the Overtone Quartet which is a newish band with Dave Holland and Jason Moran. I'm looking forward to it as I haven't seen either musician in quite some time. -
The Collector - Wayne Shorter (Bluenote) Japanese pressing

Mellow is probably putting it kindly. That was an awful album by two great musicians. I'm glad to hear someone else feels that way about that duo album. I bought it when it was released and I was soooo disappointed. Back in November I saw Wayne and his band w/Danilo Perez and he/they were amazing. Wayne didn't say a word to the audience but he sure said a few things with his horns.

Yes indeed. It's the only album I have by him outside of his playing with Cal Tjader. A solid keyboard player and excellent arranger.

RIP blues pianist Dave Alexander aka King Omar Shariff
six string replied to trane_fanatic's topic in Artists
He played in the Sacramento area for quite a while. I saw him several times over the years. He wasn't very well appreciated by the general public here. One of the times I saw him was my first "date" with my wife at a Sunday brunch where Omar played solo piano for the diners. Based on the clubs he played in town he probably didn't make much money but it didn't keep him from playing his ass off. Next thing I knew he wasn't around anymore but I see he moved back to Marshall,Texas. RIP -
Thanks Pete. All of my Joe Cocker albums are early ones except I do have a British double lp that is a more modern best of so it might be on that one. I'll have to check it out and see.

Finally-the follow-up Charlie Haden/Hank Jones duo CD
six string replied to jazzkrow's topic in New Releases
And not forgetting the one with Hampton Hawes from the 70s... Yep! Got that one too (on vinyl). I picked up Come Sunday on Monday but so far I've only heard about two thirds of it. It's very good but I listened while waking up with my cup of joe so I can't say much about it yet but I will. It's my kind of "religious" music. -
Looking at that discography list I noticed he's credited on a Joe Cocker album. Does anyone know what song or songs?

Seeing this issue resurface put a smile on my face for some reason. -
Finally-the follow-up Charlie Haden/Hank Jones duo CD
six string replied to jazzkrow's topic in New Releases
I was in the middle of a serious Hank Jones lov-a-thon when Steal Away came out so of course I bought it. I've always loved it and I really like these piano/bass duo recordings that Charlie has been involved in over the last decade or two. There aren't any that I don't have a high regard for and I not many that I don't own. -
So am I the only one here who likes Sings The Blues!?? I listened to it last night and for the first time in more than a year and thought it sounded fantastic.

Prestige International & Folk Releases - Who Knew?
six string replied to JSngry's topic in Discography
I have an album by Tracy Nelson (folk blues singer for those not familiar) on Prestige. My copy is a green label reissue and it doesn't have Rudy's stamp on it so I don't know if he did the original or not. It's a very good album of "front porch" style acoustic blues. -
Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?

Last night I played disc three. Great stuff and fitting for the moment of course. -

Rudy probably didn't do 45 singles. -
If it was with Holland I can't imagine it was much later than mid-'80s. I wonder if it was Thurman Barker who played with Dave Holland on Sam's ECM album Contrasts. I was listening to it last night along with some of Sam's Bluenote albums and I couldn't help but notice the similarity of Contrasts to Dave Holland's sound for the last ten or twelve years. Coincidence?

There is a three lp box set of the 5Spot recordings titled The Great Concert of Eric Dolphy on Presige that was remastered in 1974 by Brian Gardner. I'm not sure if that is the original release date for this particular box or just that it used that remastering and released later. I bought it used. It is the green Presige label. I have the Complete Prestige box too but being the vinyl junky I am I bought it anyway. I had seen a copy a few years ago at the same store and it disappeared so when a copy showed up again I decided to get it.

I have that one also, bought it used many years ago. I really like it a lot and wondered if I'd ever find vol.2. I'm glad to know that I can stop looking but sad that there wasn't one. Surely there is more music on tape from this performance that could be released?

The Jarrett title Rio is good but like the Carnegie Hall set it is marred (imo) by the volume of the audience response. The fact that the songs are short, relative to his usual output means the listener (me) is pulled out of his dreamscape again and again. At times I swear the applause is louder than the music. I need to burn this on a cdr with the audience edited out or at least turned way down. That would make it a better album imo.

As none of us get to live forever and I'm not sure one would want to until that moment comes when you ARE leaving....Still, Motian left us with a lot of music and memories. Bless him. If you count yourself as a jazz fan and you don't have any albums with him on it, you might not be a jazz fan after all. Thank god not everyone who sits behind a kit is a basher. PM showed people what it was like to approach the drum kit from a different perspective. Not that he was the only one, mind you.

Well, I'm going to spin a little Monk and Charlie in "It" land.

Is that nine views and a stripper or nine views OF a stripper?

I have the Horizon lp so I'm not too interested in a $25 extension of the same. Still I'm intrigued by his playing with Joey Baron and Greg Osby. That sounds really interesting.

Bootleg: Miles Davis Quintet Live in Europe 1967
six string replied to mjzee's topic in New Releases
Like jazzbo, I find I like the stuff you don't in this post and it was pretty obvious from your post that you weren't a big MIles fan. It's cool though. It's great there this so much to choose from in jazz that we can all follow our own hearts. I really like this bootleg set. It is everything I wanted in my mind as far as what the band did with the songs and their level of communication/skill makes this music more exciting than the Plug Nickel tapes because they have taken that idea and gone much further with it. Sorry for the long sentence. -
I love this album (Max w/Hassaan) and I also really dig Hope and Nichols so I really enjoyed reading this thread. Not much to add except
