  1. One night Jim Sangrey brought a later Stitt Prestige record (can't remember which one) to our weekly listening party. He quickly sampled all the tracks on both sides and then exclaimed... "FUCK Sonny, how many times can you record the SAME FUCKING ALBUM?!"
  2. Oh come on, Maxwell's Silver Hammer is AWESOME!
  3. It's never been one of my favorites (I'm more of an Abbey Road guy myself)...but She's Leaving Home has always really struck me. It's one of those albums you almost have to listen to straight through, which is part of the reason I never played it much...since the "whole" doesn't really hit me. But I have utmost respect for it as an achievement and a major door-opener to the art of making "albums".
  4. I remember a reverse version of this back in the 80's when quite a few rock bands appeared on the horizon with members that were black. Living Colour, King's X, Fishbone, 24-7 Spyz, etc. I couldn't believe all of the conversations I heard about people being "shocked" that these guys could really "rock". (for some reason Hendrix and Thin Lizzy never came up in these discussions). Like it's some genetic thing that you have to be white to be a convincing rock band. Of course that is just as much utter crap as saying you can't play funk if you're white. I think these bands had to work even harder to gain respect since it wasn't just the music that was important, but proving the perception wrong. I've seen all of those bands live over the years (hell, I've probably seen King's X 15 times) and I NEVER focus on the color of their skin.
  5. When I was a kid I was living in Kansas, there was a massive heatwave through the midwest (circa 1980). It was getting up around 110 during the day and at night would cool to an unpleasant 98. The biggest selling item was air conditioners (they were sold out everywhere). We had some extras which we sold at auction for about 3 times their actual value. Anyway, on to the pool... The town had a HUGE public pool and you wouldn't believe the number of people they managed to pack into that sucker during that heatwave. The shallow end of the pool was standing room only, you literally couldn't float because there wasn't enough room. The deep end was almost as bad with people treading water to stay cool...and this was during the week! The weekend was insane, you'd park about 1/2 mile from the pool and walk to get there...to stand in line for 30 minutes to get into the pool...which was so packed you couldn't even swim. You would think the combination of the heat and the crowds would have led to flared tempers...but it was actually kind of like a big party. A good deal of social bonding went on at that pool (and I'm sure some unsavory elements as well, but I was 10 years old and unaware). It was just kind of a surreal experience. I went to that pool everyday during the following summers I lived there, but it was never the same "community" atmosphere once the heat wave passed.

  8. The Parlan set is a must have in my opinion. I find it incredible that none of his albums has been RVGed! IN AMERICA. . . Lon speaketh the truth...

    Donald Byrd "KOFI"

Thanks Daniel, I thought there was a vocal date but didn't know the particulars... ...what's funny is that I provided some info for the Pearson discography page...and I still asked the question!
  11. I have a Technics 1800 turntable in dire need of a new RCA cable (mine has a bad short in it). Since it's the kind that's hard-wired into the turntable I'm unsure where to look for a replacement. Would Technics have spare parts? Or is there a special order place I can get it from? Thanks

    Junior Mance

Yes, that album is available seperately from the box set. And I agree it's a KILLER concert.
  13. Mic placement for cymbals can be a major pain in the ass. I personally go for a near-coincident pattern for the overheads to reduce phasing across the stereo spread.

    Donald Byrd "KOFI"

Kofi is my favorite of the later period Byrd/Pearson collaborations, I wouldn't want to be without it. Fancy Free is a close second, mostly due to the wonderful title track. While I also like the Electric Byrd album, it's just not nearly as successful as the other sessions. Was Kofi Pearson's last recording?
  15. If you really dig Speak No Evil I think you'd probably be better off getting the following titles before The All Seeing Eye: JuJu Night Dreamer Adam's Apple Etcetera Schizophrenia
  16. Azimuth refers to the angle between the tape head(s) and the tape medium.

    Junior Mance

Agreed! His solo on Light And Lovely from The Tenor Scene is one of those HELL YEAH, HALLELUJAH moments.
  18. Guess Paul Allen will have to step in and buy the Sonics now...since that's what it took to keep the Seahawks in Seattle. What is the friggin' problem with Key Arena anyway?
  19. Trust me...YOU ARE OPENING A CAN OF WORMS! Early Crimson is addictive.... P.S. - on second thought...mid Crimson, 80's Crimson & present day Crimson are ALSO addictive.
  20. Deleted due to utter stupidity....

    Idrees Sulieman

The "Outskirts of Town" session is KILLER...a little hidden gem. Sulieman is on fire, as is Jimmy Forrest, Jerome Richardson, Tiny Grimes, etc, etc.
  22. No, they are different. But the Xbox 360 comes with a component cable out of the box (you don't have to buy it seperately).
  23. Are you sure you'd know them if you heard them?
  24. I'm wondering what Oliver was referring to with the title "skull session".
