  1. I read an interview with Jon Lord (probably about 3 years ago) where he mentioned his main "axe" was a Hammond C-3 Organ that he purchased from Christine McVie back in the 70's. Is there a huge tonal difference between the B3 and the C3?
  2. That's true...unless you have a 1,500,000 track library all encoded at 128k and now need it in another format...
  3. The higher price for improved quality sample rates are written into the contracts with the record labels.
  4. This Turrentine release REALLY makes me happy! What a great session (She's A Carioca is wonderful) that deserves wider attention. I've been bugging Cuscuna for YEARS about releasing these Turrentine/Pearson sessions.
  5. My guess is that there's no way this would sell enough copies to justify an RVG release. Nothing against the album (which I happen to enjoy) but I don't see much in the way of sales potential.
  6. Alex Skolnick is a very progressive guitarist who used to play in a thrash metal band called Testament. He's technically gifted and always sounded "constrained" by playing in a metal band. I heard a cover version he did of So What years ago, it was very good although he didn't stay strictly "modal" with the solo. I'd be curious to hear what he's up to these days.
  7. Happy B-Day! If it's any consolation...30 doesn't feel nearly as bad as 36...
  8. YIKES! Scary 80's flashback...this looks like a cover for an AHA album...or maybe Frankie Goes To Hollywood.
  9. I feel your pain. I watched the entire first day (all 12+ hours of coverage on NFL Network) and I watched a good portion of yesterday's until I fell asleep on the couch.
  10. I predict Moss will give 110% to the Patriots. He knows that he's in the tail end of his career and he wants a shot at a Superbowl ring. I don't think Moss will be a distraction because that just won't be allowed in New England.
  11. I've met Lemmy from Motorhead on a couple different occasions (he's a really good flamenco guitarist by the way). I ran into Eddie Vedder and Jeff Ament from Pearl Jam in Tower Records in Seattle (they were browsing the jazz section). I helped Josh Homme from Queens Of The Stone Age pick out Coltrane CDs at a record store I worked at. I met Weird Al Yankovic at a CD release party. You can spot me in a couple crowd shots in Ratt's You're In Love video
  12. Did you catch Bjork while Snipe hunting?
  13. While I have liked some of the Bjork I've heard I was quite unthrilled with the SNL performance. Just seemed kind of tuneless and meandering. (just my opinion)

    Lionel Hampton

This is one of my faves.
  15. Of all the crazy places to have a jazz festival...Winchester VA...part of the annual Apple Blossom Festival http://www.thebloom.com/events/jazz-fest.html Faddis appears to be the only national act.
  16. Methinks the Browns will go quarterback....either Quinn or Russell, whoever is still there at 3. Of course if both quarterbacks go in the first 2 picks (doubtful) then they'll have a cream crop of running backs, wide receivers and linemen to choose from. The Browns could use help in many areas, if it wasn't for the need at quarterback I wouldn't be surprised if they traded down to get more picks.

Don't have the new RVG but I have the old release and the Dexter BN box...definitely like this album...not "top Dex" but very enjoyable. In fact I probably enjoy these sessions more than Gettin' Around (which I've never been overly thrilled by).
  18. What a loss, from a man that definitely had more art to share with the world. I'll be spinning Black Fire when I get home this evening.
  19. It may not hurt today...but you definitely want to go to the dentist before it starts hurting...
  20. I have (almost) all of the Garland OJC releases and wouldn't want to part with ANY of them. If I was forced at gunpoint to choose 1, it would either be "All Kinds Of Weather" or "Moodsville #1 w/Lockjaw". But that would be really depressing because I also love A Garland Of Red, Red Alone, Red's Good Groove, etc, etc, etc...
  21. Not jazz but good stuff. Found on Napster (the CD is out of print).
  22. The introductory shot of Kurt in The Thing is a mini classic... He's playing Chess with a computer which has a female voice, while merrily drinking scotch on the rocks. The computer makes a move and he scoffs, "Poor Girl, you're losin' it." After his next move she counters and says "Checkmate." Kurt sits up, opens a panel in the computer and pours the scotch and ice cubes in amidst a flurry of sparks. He then proclaims... "Cheatin' Bitch!"
  23. Dude - John Carpenter's The Thing?? Agreed, Kurt Russell was AWESOME in The Thing...in fact, that movie is way underrated in my opinion and follows the original short story much closer than the original version.
