  1. OK I'm interested.
  2. I suspect that outside of this forum Hank is not a known quantity. Even for jazz fans he's probably best known for having his solos edited out of the first release of "At the Blackhawk". It's only the enthusiasm of people here which led me to finally order the Mosaic box.
  3. Just came back from hearingThe Trio with Roscoe, George Lewis and Muhal Richard Abrams. (One of 3 concerts I attended today at the Ojai Music Festival.) Whatever Roscoe's troubles they aren't interfering with his playing: the concert was beautiful.
  4. IIRC (and I may not) what I saw was an hour show of just Nance. I think it was from a local Chicago program. (And I may be wrong about all of that.) It was in colour.
  5. And Leo Gorcey and Gandy have been returned (for the first time?) to the famous cover photo.
  6. Years ago at a Duke Ellington conference someone showed a high quality colour video of a tv show starring Ray Nance and his group. Unfortunately it was announced (to a chorus of groans and complaints) that it wasn't commercially available.
  7. Just got an e-mail from the Ojai Music Festival (where I'm spending the day Sunday): Update from Tom Morris: Wadada Leo Smith I am so happy to tell you that Wadada Leo Smith is fine! As you may know he fainted on stage at last night's concert at the end of the incredible evening. He was suffering from dehydration after a busy day, plus long travel Wednesday from the east coast. EMS determined the cause of the problem backstage and Wadada quickly revived. They took him to the hospital as a precaution where he was checked out thoroughly and released around 1:30 pm. I was with him at the hospital, and took him back to his hotel, where he will rest today before returning home tomorrow. Wadada, who defines generosity, said late last night with his customary twinkle, that he was sorry he could not play his encore for everyone! I know you join me in the good news that he is doing fine.
  8. Although the notes list most of the band as "unknown" for the first set on disc 2 the announcers (who are in some studio, not in the club) claim that Art Farmer and Jimmy Cleveland are playing. Could Art be the unknown trumpet soloist on Falcon's lair?
  9. Jimmy Cobb is still alive. Would you say this to his face?
  10. I got an e-mail which said (amongst other things): We had a very strong response to our offerings over the last few days and want to thank you for your support! Please note that we are behind in shipping and we expect to ship your order in the 5 - 7 days.
  11. Has anyone else downloaded this yet? The John Kirby Sextet sides are the best I've ever head of this group (though I can't claim I've heard a lot). What kind of program was this broadcast? Are there other extant broadcasts where there's a "narrator" reading the band leader's intros of the numbers?
  12. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_House_of_the_Rising_Sun Dave van Ronk was pissed at Dylan for stealing his arrangement but it didn't sound that different to me from versions I heard by The Weavers and Joan Baez. (I thought I even remembered a version by The Kingston Trio but I think I'm misremembering as I often do.)
  13. Irving Mills probably copyrighted it when Cab Calloway recorded it. Most recordings I've seen credit Mills sometimes under another name that he use. (Can't remember what it was.)
  14. Ignore the question mark: it is Jim's birthday. I can't believe that I'm the first to say it here: Happy Birthday, Jim!
  15. Glad to see people remembering him pre-Bond. Heard a piece on KCRW about him where they never mentioned any of his earlier work.
  16. You're way too young to be worried about this. (Oh to be 60 again.) , But what's "snake" format?
  17. http://www.jazzwax.com/2017/05/oscar-pettiford-1955-58.html Anyone here heard this yet?
  18. So do you think it's a compilation from different sets? Ot is it one solo?
  19. This is sure more than 3 choruses and maybe the longest Bird solo I've ever heard. But I don't know where this is from. Not identified on Youtube. Can anyone here i.d. it? Is this from The Apartment tapes
  20. Happy B'day young man.
  21. No extra footage-- the show was live. What you see is what you get.
  22. Thanks. I think I asked the question based on a long solo I'd been listening to but I can't remember what it was.
  23. I have a faint memory of there once being a discussion here about Bird's longest recorded solo but I'm not finding it using search. Anyone remember it or know ho to find it?
