  1. I'm not attacking a fellow musician( I'm not a musician) or a member of this board. I'm defending Johnny Mandel who probably reads that New Yorker. And it was on topic. But you're right I didn't need to bring up the concert I saw to do that. (Actually I thought Bad Plus was ok though sort of boring. )
  2. I saw that tour but can't remember what she sang. She supposedly wrote Coyote about Sam Shepherd who was n the tour with her. BTW Is Hejira the one that has a photo of the skater Toller Crantston on the back or inside over? And is the video of Miles of Aisles the one that begins with the film of The Teenagers singing "I'm Not a Juvenile Delinquent". (I may have misremembered both. Had "Miles" on a Lazer disc and I no longer have the disc of a machine to play it on.)
  3. "Cutie pie hits"? Is he talking about Philly Joe? And what does Johnny Mandel have to do with it besides writing Emily. (BTW I saw Johnny Mandel, who was in his '90s lead a big band a couple of years ago and they rocked. I've also seen The Bad Plus and they didn't-- I got free tickets because the venue couldn't sell them and didn't want to have a completely empty house.)

I've got to admit I've always liked Ellington's version of Mighty Like the Blues which I was surprised to see was credited to Feather.
  5. Received opinion keeps changing too. When I started really listening to jazz in 1961 received opinion was that Ahmad Jamal was a cocktail pianist, post army Prez was much inferior to his earlier work, Pops' big band work was unworthy of him, Stan Kenton was head of some sort of overblown cult, and after Moanin', Art Blakey had become a cliche. (I'm embarrassed to admit that I once wrote a club review of the 2nd great Miles quintet in which I referred to Wayne Shorter having "escaped the confines of The Jazz Messengers".) Received opinion now disagrees with all of this except Kenton. (And btw I still agree with some of the old opinions.)
  6. According to YouTube music is the Count Basie Band.
  7. Henry Threadgill. And loving it.
  8. Well some good came from the Mosaic panic: I wanted to help out and buy a couple of sets so when several of you highly recommended Henry Threadgill so I took your suggestion and am I ever happy I did. This is a great music. (Though I have to admit I'm not nuts about the session that was released here for the first time-- but otherwise I live it. )
  9. Didn't know of the existence of this till recently when a friend turned me on to it. Now it's a favorite.
  10. Well I think they were rumored to be even more extensive. Almost glad they weren't.
  11. Again IIRC you've quit this group several times because you took offense about less nasty things said about you. And the point is not what you said about fellow musicians but what you implied about fellow board members.
  12. IIRC (and I often don't) someone on this forum recently attended a Giddens concert and liked it. So why do you gratuitously feel the need to insult them? No one was even talking about her. As someone recently wrote : there's a reason why there's less and less discussion on this forum. Vituperative comments like yours just drive people away.
  13. I was about to post this story too. But is everything really free to download and how do we search it? I wonder if there are any jazz tracks never released on Lp or cd.
  14. IIRC I saw Bill Barron at The Montmartre in Copenhagen a couple of times in the summer of 1964. Yes, he was good but at the time he didn't seem to me to be that distinctive though I was probably too enthralled by Coltrane at the time to be very perceptive.
  15. Happy B'day Shawn!
  16. Very well written article. BTW If they own the masters to the Bird set they could offer them for download once they've run out of cds. Or they could license them to someone still in the cd business-- if any such company exists in the future.
  17. To honour Jeanne Moreau I presume.
  18. Happy B'day EKE BBB
  19. Ricky Riccardi makes a pretty good case for this really being Pops' birthday. http://dippermouth.blogspot.com/2015/07/happy-birthday-pops-case-for-july-4-1901.html?m=0
  20. I was disappointed the one time I tried 5 Guys. I guess I should give them another chance. Will someday try a Shake Shack but meanwhile I'm an In and Out guy. (Though I also like homeboy The Habit. )
  21. Gotta admit I like the hot dogs at Costco (as well as their so-called Polish Sausage-- which tastes to me like their hot dog in a different shape.) Also like that they offer raw onions as condiment.
  22. Washington has a pretty busy schedule. http://www.kamasiwashington.com/ Also he had an installation at the Whitney Biennial. My son thought it was the best thing there. Had no idea that he was a well known musician and was surprised that I'd heard of him. (The installation did have music as part of it. Not sure if it has anything to do with his new record. )
  23. Funny I just got mine last week and it's number is 6633. Maybe they held it back till they got the other box I'd ordered. It does look like they can only sell a few hundred more. Surely it's the last available set where the booklet gives both the Lp and cd track lists.
  24. Went to https://www.arroyosecoweekend.com/ over the weekend. Saw Mumford, Tom Petty, The Revivalists and The Meters (originals plus Cyril Neville and a second keyboard player) amongst others but the first musicians I heard were Bennie Maupin and his septet! A small but appreciative crowd dancing to Filthy McNasty and several originals. Also noticed that at one of the three stages, the between set music seemed to be a Gerry Mulligan mix tape. So you could go from John Mayall to Bernie's Tune to Broken Social Scene.
