Wow this is amazing. I only knew about the existance of the video on the 2nd site you list. I though it was the only known footage of Django.

He was a tv star in Canada before he was Dean Wormer.

I saw Ellington (twice), Herman (both at the same club in Montreal), Basie at Disneyland!, Gil Evans in Paris, LA and Sweet Basil, and Sun Ra at a Country and Western bar in Toronto. However the only one I really got to dance in front of was (I guess ) a pick-up band called Manteca at the El Mocambo in Toronto. Dancing to a good big band that takes solos is really fun. Made me wish I was even older and had gotten to dance to Basie or Ellington. Oh, weel. I did go to a danace where the Dirty "Dozen Brass Band played.

I've seen him perform solo, in a duet with Roscoe Mitchell and once with a group. (Can't remember who.) The only cds I have are his Sackville release and Conference of the Birds. I've always enjoyed his work but never felt a need to buy more. Don't know why. I once saw him walking down the street in Paris and accosted him to tell him I liked his work. Before I could speak he threw his hands up and said he didn't speak French . I guess this shows that: 1) I look French 2) I dress like a pan handler 3) He's not used to being recognized.

Apparently Shatner attneded McGill University in Montreal but never graduated. Never-the-less the Student Union (over the objections of the administration) call their building The Shatner Building. Most of the buiildings with official names are called something like the Molson or Seagram Building.

I bought the hybrid single of Sympathy for the Devil which had remixes by several DJ's (including Fatboy Slim). None of them were anywhere near as good as the original which I enjoyed hearing in 5.1 surround.

I saw Benny Carter when he was in his late 80's. He paced himself, gave lots of solo space to his group but sounded just like Benny Carter when it was his turn to solo.

Do any of them indicate who the artist was? SomeoneI know worked on the graphics for that Olympics and I'm curioius as to whether he did these.

I was fortunate enough to be in London for a concert Elmer Berstein gave at the Royal Albert Hall. He conducted scores by others as well as by himself and when they played The Bad and the Beautiful he had Raksin at the other end of a phone line in LA! I think this was shortly before Raksin's death. (Elmer was a friend and sadly I think seeing him after the concert was the last time I saw him alive.)

I agree that Flying Dagggers is a beatuful film but that the story isn't quite as strong as Hero. BTW You might want to look at Iron Monkey. Not nearly as beautiful as the other 2, but a lot of fun.

I used to watch on Tuesday nights when they had "Jazz Classics" and "Duke Ellington". The trouble was they kept playing the same things each week. Recently "jazz Classics" has repeatedly shown an old film called "The Duke Steps Out" . Unfortuantely not about Ellington but a film starring Lena Horne. For a while The Duke show kept repeating "The Intimate Ellington" which was so good I got it on DVD so as not to have to put up with all horrible commericals. Jazz Classics also repeatedly played the feature length Dizzy revue film-- the name of which i forget but which has a lot of good Gillespie big band stuff between bad jokes and dancers.

Film producer. According to some on this board: corrupter of American youth. Used to be an academic and corrupter of Canadian youth.

Anyone know where one might find the Bing Crosby show? Duke and Jimmy Blanton appeared one but to the best of my knowledge it's only availabe on tape. I'd like to find it on-line or on cd.

I think I've never heard his stuff with Jamal but I love his work with Gil Evans, on Katanga and on his own Candid release. Aa very distinctive player: When I first got Katanga I put it on and left the room; when I returned it was during one of his solos and I thought I was listening to Out of the Cool.

I've got a hard copy of one up till 1953 by Piet koster and Chris Sellers. It's got some, but not many, airshots.

Was Have Gun a radio show before it was a tv show? I know Gunsmoke was but....

Anyone else here old enough to remember Godfrey? (sp?) Anyway the new Storyville release The Sensitive Billie Holiday contains a version of The Man I Love on which, according to the notes by Scott Yanow, she was accompanied only by the "obscure pianist Archie Blyer". After about 30 seconds research I discovered that the paino player was Archie Bleyer who's hardly obscure. To Jazz fans he may be best known as the man who owned the Candid records. (It was a subsiduary of a larger company, the name of which I forget, but which made its money off of The Everly Brothers and Andy Williams.) However what made Bleyer famous was his work as band leader on The Arthur Godfrey Breakfast Club radio show and this performance was on that show. (Or at least some Godfrey show-- I think he may have had more than one.) He was very popular and I'm surprised that Billie was on such a mainstream program. BTW Yannow also misidentifies Fine and Mellow as Billie's Blues.

BTW Didn't something funny happen with the title on the record itself: "Old Bottles New Wine" or did it jsut reverse the order to "Old Wine New Bottle"?

The other day while driving I heard a recent recording by a multi-instrumentalist who at one point played a bass saxophone. Unfortunately I left my car before I heard who it was. I'd like to find a copy for my friend Josef Skvorecky who wrote a novella called The Bass Saxophone. I once got him a Roscoe Mitchell record where Roscoe played it briefly but I think his taste runs more to Adrian Rollini. The guy I head on the radio was at least mainstream. Anyone any idea on who it might havea been?

And I think Francis Davis if now the jazz columnist for the Vilage Voice. I think that's a venue that also gives you influence.
