I remember channel surfing 3 or 4 years ago and ending up watching a complete girls softball game for the first time in my life. Guess who was pitching? -

The Diamondbacks could use her!! I pity the kids that have to face their offspring in little league. -
I happened to pick up an Artist House title the other day, too. Hopefully, I'll like these. Have never heard them. I still see some sealed Black Lion titles around. Weren't they a budget label from 80's? ORNETTE COLEMAN: Body Meta (Artist House) $5.25 ORNETTE COLEMAN: Tomorrow is the Question (Contemporary...original stereo ) $20 THELONIOUS MONK: The Man I Love (Black Lion) $2.55 THELONIOUS MONK: Monk's Music (Gateway) $2.75

Question for Venus catalogue surfers.
wolff replied to Son-of-a-Weizen's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Great, I'll keep an eye out for the vinyl. Totally loving my first and only Venus title as I type, Maybern: Don't Know Why. The piano sound they get is wonderful. It's like I'm 10-15 feet behind him. Mesmerizing!! Hopefully, I'll have more soon. Any favs among the following? Beck, Joe "Girl Talk" Beirach, Richie "Romantic Rhapsody" Beirach, Richie "No Borders" Bollani, Stefano "Black And Tan Fantasy" Bullock, Hiram "Late Night Talk" Hanna, Roland "Dream" Hazeltine, David "Senor Blues" Hazeltine, David "Pearls" Higgins, Eddie "Bewitched" Higgins, Eddie "Dear Old Stockholm" Higgins, Eddie "Dear Old Stockholm Vol.2" Higgins, Eddie "Foolish Heart Vol.1" Higgins, Eddie "Foolish Heart Vol.2" Kuhn, Steve "Sing Me Softly Of The Blues" Kuhn, Steve "Quiereme Mucho" Moffett, Charles "Magic Of Love" Nytrio "Love You Madly" Wilen, Barney "Inside Nitty Gritty" Williamson, Claude "Autumn In Ny" Williamson, Claude "Fiesta" Woods, Phil "Souvernirs" -
I took a trip to Bud's Jazz Records near downtown Seattle yesterday. I seldom go looking for used jazz records these days. With the lack of good stores and Ebay and the size of my collection, there is little need/desire. I've been going to Bud's for 20 years, but probably no more. The prices were so high I walked out after 10 minutes. $29 for used OJC's!!!!! LP's I can pick up under $5 elswhere were mostly in the $10-20 range. Oh yeah, they were selling the rest of Don Lamphere's collection for big bucks, too. Nothing but common re-issues.

So, am I the only one who buys vinyl re-issues around here? Not jazz, but if you are a Sinatra fan it's very much worth getting!! Frank Sinatra - September of My Years Pressed on 180-gram vinyl at RTI and cut at AcousTech Mastering by Kevin Gray from the original analog masters. Includes all original packaging(no bar-codes). Released in 1965 when Sinatra was 50, this is one of his best efforts. The album sticks with a theme of reflection and regret. Nice string tone and hall ambiance for you sound buffs.

I took back a noisy Classic Records re-issue of Ellington/Armstrong: The Great Reunion and am listening to the records I got in exchange; Dylan: Another Side Of Bob Dylan Sundazed Frank Sinatra: September Of My Years Both are very nice re-issues.

I did some digging a while back. I received confirmation that they are from RVG digital masters. I have not heard them, but a very reliable source says they sound pretty bad. I will be passing for this reason and the fact that they are, by and large, popular titles and many other re-issues can be found. For starters, Classic Records has done or will be doing many of them in both stereo and mono. Also, for the same $40-50 each, you can get Liberty or even New York USA pressings from the sixties of some of the same titles. Then there are the 70's pressings along with the Conn's of a few titles that can be had for $20 or so. If you name specific titles, we may be able to point you in the best direction for sound quality/value in the other re-issues out there. Without looking at the titles in the series, I think there are a couple originals(in M- shape) that can be had for about the same price as these TOJJ's.

My Vote: Jennie Finch

I would imagine the hybrid SACD will be out soon. Fantasy just released 10 titles with more to follow.

Let's see what this goes for. Great seller BTW. Too bad I can't afford his product anymore. When Classic Records wants to hear what the original, mono Blue Notes sound like, they call this guy. Minor Move

Yep, start with this.

Of the Hubbard BN's I have on vinyl, this is how I rate them: Open Sesame Breaking Point Blue Spirits Ready for Freddie Hub Tones Hub Cap Here to Stay I like the first two all the way through. Starting with Blue Spirits, there are songs that do not get played. Most fall between outstanding and blah.

Lou Donaldson Sextet BN 5021 (Japanese 10") Lou Donaldson BN 5055 (Japanese 10") Thad Jones Mosaic...I love the re-mastering. I wish all re-issues of Blue Notes from this period sounded like this. Sounds much more natural and distortion free compared to others. Can't imagine it getting much better. Joe Venuti and Zoot Sims(plays some soprano): Joe and Zoot (Chiaroscuro) My fisrt full LP of jazz violin. Nice music and above average pressing.

Blue Note Biography on sale
wolff replied to ejp626's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
They look like another European public domain label. Why they are crap compared to the other PD labels, I do not know. The Lou Donaldson CD from Blue Note 5021 and 5055 is a new one to me. Also, I wonder why they are selling these in the USA? -
LF an inexpensive, but very reliable DVD player

I walked into Blockbuster about 2 years ago and picked up a Magnavox for $99. They went on sale for $79 about six months ago. Never a problem. -

I'm jealous. Is it one of the best reissues you've heard?

Yes, he sings a bit on the Weepin Willie. His Audioquest vinyl is pretty much sold out everywhere. How about Robert Lucas?

Harold Mabern Trio: Don't Know Why Venus(Japan) $22 at Cadence Recoded in 2003. I was very excited to finally get this. Venus is one of the few labels releasing new jazz recordings on vinyl and I'd heard good things from a fellow poster. My only worry was whether or not I'd like the music. as I have little from their stable of artists. The packaging and look and feel of the vinyl ooze quality. IMO the Venus covers are the nicest out there, period. Full, rich, all analog sound(I beleive they spared no expense by recording in both DSD and 30ips tape). Nice hearing a piano that sounds close to actual size!! It sounds very natural which lets me fully enjoy the music and be amazed by his musicianship. Wow! Nice mix of tempos. Very interesting jazz. I recommend getting a title or two(about 40 out there, but going fast) and then more if you like them.

The Bee Hive Session: Unissued Tunes Vol. One It's been out since 1983, but Cadence has a few left at $10. 6 tunes on nice, quiet red vinyl. 4 songs are over 7 minutes. Nick Brigola Johnny Hartman Sal Salvador(2) Sal Nistico Walte Davis Wish I had more from this small, hard to find/afford label. The Hartman tune and the Nistico(tenor)Ronnie Mathews (piano) duet stand out for me. Walter Davis Jr. also cuts loose on a nice tune.

Thanks, Brownie. I find the public domain issues interesting, if not troublesome. I see now how this will be a good thing to the many consumers, but I do not think it's for me. It could get very confusing. So much info could be missing from the PD re-issues. Original liner notes and credits, for starters. I like getting single albums or CD's and having all the info right there. Box sets are ok if they are fully annotated and easy to follow. I do not want to look up where the songs come from(original album), where and when recorded, etc.. As I've mentioned before, I'm worried the original labels will loose shelf space and thus income, and any incentive to re-issue the material again. I see it happening already. My local store had a ton of PD re-issues and little from the original labels like Blue Note and Verve.

LMAO!! That is so funny!! I just got done listening to, what I thought were, all eight takes of that song. I know why this is possibly stone mint. It's a DJ/Promo copy and there are a few notations in pencil on the individual sleaves referring to false starts, etc.. It would have driven a DJ crazy to play this LP, as many tracks have two false starts and then a clean, full take inside the same band. Too much work to figure out, so he probably shelved it. They did not leave much out. There is sharp, loud whistling from the engineer to the band that scares the crap out of me every time he does it.
