Geez, what a sicko. I get healthy by purchasing a little vinyl now and then.

There is/was a Mosaic Mingus Candid CD set. There is one on Ebay right now. Listen to sides 1-3 again and let us know if you still hear it. Hearing, memory...what's next? What I'm hearing is anything but bad on these sides. In fact.....what I hear is natural decay and a decent amount of very natural air around the horns at times. It can sound unusual, because it's absent on many recordings. If there is 'echo' it's from the room/walls that the mic picked up. That's what I'm hearing, anyway.

I have about 30-40 jazz ceedees. I usually just buy BN titles from BMG now and then.

Interesting. I'm confused. The 'Mingus Presents' sides are in stereo on my Mosaic LP set. Are they in mono on the Mosaic CD set, but stereo on the Mosaic vinyl? In addition, I've never noticed the echo. It could be there, but I'm usually pretty bugged by unnatural sounding recordings.

Could you explain this, and why do think it will not be on vinyl reissues/originals? Thanks Original Candid label

One thing I remember reading about the Mingus Atlantic reissues, was to get the regular weight vinyl, not 180 gram. A few folks were in aggreement that the 180 gram sounded worse. Take this advice with a grain of salt, as I have no personal experience.

LF: LP jackets for 'progressive' BN 60's dates...
wolff replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Offering and Looking For...
I do not think many late sixties titles got the 70's or later reissue treatment. Liberty's are originals and they seem to go gor $20+ on Ebay. Four Men With Beards may have recently reissued one or two BN late sixties titles on vinyl. As usual, your best bet is Ebay. A few years ago I made 5 very nice frames(I was doing framing has a hobby) for LP covers. Most are triple matted and fairly deep, so there is some nice depth. Once a year or so I change covers. The high gloss laminated covers look really great framed. -

Could you be specific on the covers you want? There are some vinyl reissues of popular titles out now for about $10. Japanese and Classic Records have titles around with very nice covers. Most of the Hill dates came out on Liberty and should be around. Larry Young, forget it, unless there are later than Liberty reissues, as Liberty's are originals for two or three. -
We are just trying to keep up with the ubiquitous debates on what CD versions are best and whether or not to upgrade to the latest and greatest. I have both Mosaics and the sound on both serves the music and my listening experience. I have always thought a couple of the Candid discs were pretty special sonically, but I won't go into details. You should pick them up. They can be had for around $100, at times, on EPAY. Mosaic bargains if there are any. The Classic Records 'TJ Moods' is a bit bright, but very good nonetheless. The Impulse reissue, from a few years ago, of Mingus Mingus....sucks.

Jimi Hendrix died 34 years ago today -- September 18, 1970. The discovery of Experience concert footage long believed destroyed is a remarkable coincidence!

If The Music Industry Had It To Do All Over...
wolff replied to JSngry's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Funny, I was thinking about this last night and other times before. Yes, I think they know they screwed up. But what's worse is, I do not think they think they did anything to the consumer or to the fun in collecting and listening to music. Think about the differences in enjoying recordings now to 20-30 years ago. From day one my friends and I have been 'sharing' music. I think it's fine and most importantly, a promotional tool for the record companies. We buy/bought tons of music, because of the 'sharing'. I know this concept went out the window with the mass sharing that occurs with digital. I guess the companies are in a no win situation. A new format is Sony's solution. And I guess I can't blame them. It's interesting that they are trying to think ahead with SACD. As far as I know the machines will not output the higher res signal for recording/dubs even though they could. This pisses me off, also. Sony owned the CD(so long vinyl), now they own SACD(so long CD). CD royalties to Sony ended a short time ago. One of the biggest problems, if not the biggest is someone owning/controlling the format. I find this beyond comprehension and we let it occur. Besides my fondness for vinyl this is why I avoid CD's. No one owns the vinyl format...think about it. -

I can't be of help as I have not tried these yet. I'd guess they sound like the Coltrane set. I also agree that many Atlantic originals from this period are not that great sound-wise. Vinyl.com would be another source. TThey may be cheaper if they ship to Italy.

$99 seems fair. Check Ebay. I seem to recall it going for less a year or two ago.

Why do want 30 Mosaic sets? They suck. Have your friend contact me and I'll see if I can find some fool to take them.

The thread on favorite non-jazz box sets got me playing my The Jimi Hendrix Experience set again. This box is amazing. The box is made of purple velvet. 8 thick, dead quiet LP's. Each LP is housed in individual picture sleeves and the photos are GREAT! These picture sleeves are as thick as album covers. Inside the picture sleeve there is a regular poly/paper sleeve. Unreal!! The 80 page booklet is color and of very thick stock. High quality photos throughout. An informative paragraph or two about every cut. Last but not least, IMO the music and sound are awesome. The warmth and relaxed presentation belie it's digital source, bigtime. I expected unpolished, filler type songs, but I like just about every song. If this issue did not receive every award possible, somebody screwed up. Think of a very deluxe Mosaic 8 QLP set and you'll get the picture. 4 years ago I paid $40 for it during a Tower sale. I think I'll tip my hat as I pass Jimi's memorial grave site tomorrow.

Pretty shady, but if the mix was done by Bob Irwin it was in very competent hands. Many reasons Dylan let Irwin do his catalog. McBride may have never heard of him, but I'm sure he's listened to his work.

The vinyl edition will be available on Oct 12, for those so inclined. Cut by Kevin Gray, I believe(He did a stellar job on Sinatra's: September Of My Years for Rhino) . Rhino will be doing the vinyl, not Nonesuch. It will be a 2LP set. Each suite will be put on its own side, and side 4 will be BONUS MATERIAL(instrumentals) - that WILL NOT BE released on compact disc. Pre-order at Red Trumpet.

No offense, but until I find out otherwise, I gotta LMAO at this statement. These are dubs from a CD. Remastered? Once again, LMAO. Source? Master tapes? Second or 3rd gen tapes? I think not. Someone please post what they list as source.

washingtonpost.com Japan Gadget Turns Plants Into Speakers By YURI KAGEYAMA The Associated Press Tuesday, September 14, 2004; 9:57 PM TOKYO - The therapeutic power of flowers takes on new meaning with a Japanese gadget that turns plants into audio speakers, making the petals and leaves tremble with good vibrations. Called Ka-on, which means "flower sound" in Japanese, the machine consists of a donut-shaped magnet and coil at the base of a vase that hooks up to a CD player, stereo or TV. Place the flowers into the vase, turn on Ka-on and the magnet and coil relay the sound vibrations up the stems through the plant's water tubes. Near your ear and hear the music emanate from the petals. Touch a leaf, and feel it shake as though in a quiet dance. Later this month, you'll be able to carry on a telephone conversation with a flower with a planned speaker phone model. Unlike regular speakers, which send sound in one direction, Ka-on shoots it in all directions, filling an entire room with music in a more natural ambiance. Masumi Gotoh, president of Let's Corp., a Nagoya-based telecommuncations-equipment company that developed and manufactures Ka-on, calls it ideal for flower table-arrangements at weddings, reception desks at hospitals and decoration at restaurants. Ka-on vases and amplifiers come in various sizes, ranging in price from $46 to $460. There's a version that works with potted plants, and a wireless connection will soon be available for piping music to the Ka-on. Not only does Ka-on deliver flowery music, it keeps bugs off plants and helps cut flowers last longer, Gotoh claims. "The plant is happy listening to music," says Gotoh, showing off a rubber plant hooked up to Ka-on in his Tokyo office. "Gerberas and sunflowers work especially well as speakers." Ka-on is also being used for concerts. Several Ka-on were planted near a bamboo grove to play music at a recent event in Japan. About 3,000 of $46 Ka-on version, on sale via the Internet since July, have been sold and some 10,000 orders have been received so far.
