What most of the world doesn't know can be tragic.
wolff replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
Yikes! 1200 LP's!! That's probably a lot of good music gone to waste. Dumb ass. I've found that people that have big collections know what they have(music) and hang onto it and still enjoy the music in the grooves. Over the years I've been given quite a few LP's. I get calls from friends at garage sales asking if I want the LP's they see. Then there are the people that think any LP is valuable, just because it's an LP. How many of you visit garage/ estate sales looking for vinyl? I used to do it quite a bit, but not so much anymore. It can be a good way to keep vinyl from being thrown out. -
What non-mosaic box set is tops on your list.
wolff replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Without a doubt my favorite is The Jimi Hendrix Experience 8LP box put out by his estate a few years ago. Everything is super high quality from an era long gone. The rare photos and notes and music keep me occupied for hours. -
You need to fix that. Do you have any re-issues that Classic has done from other labels? If not, try one of these: Duke Ellington: Blues in Orbit Coleman Hawkins and Clark Terry: Back In Bean's Bag Holly Cole - Temptation Sonny Rollins & Coleman Hawkins: Sonny Meets Hawk! Ella Fitzgerald - Clap Hands Here Come Charlie Ry Cooder: Buena Vista Social Club The Dave Brubeck Quartet - Time Out

Yes, Mobley really impresses me with class and melody on this one. Sonically, I'll say this, the highs are out of whack and it's not an LP I can sit through play after play without being distracted by the unnaturalness. I love playing it once and then moving on to something less abrasive in the upper mid-range and higher. YMMV

Listening to Kenny Drew: Undercurrent Classic Records re-issue of Blue Note 84059. Available at the usual places for $20-30. First copy was warped and I received a replacement. Only problem with this I've had from Classic, but I've read that others have worse luck. Great hard-bop with a ballad and Hubbard is a joy to listen to. I'm no reviewer, but these songs are really fresh and different Quite a few suspended rhythms that I like. Sound is pretty good, but nothing special. Some things are a bit 'off' that can be a bit distracting (read un-lifelike) and take away from the great music.

First post!! Welcome and keep vinyl alive!!

Interesting Blue Note info or misinformation, as the case may be. I've recently been learning some things about Blue Note recordings and original vinyl I never knew. I admit it could be false, so learning may be an incorrect term. The following was news to me and it could be widely known or just rumor. It could have been discussed in Mosaic sets, also. I assume Cuscuna(and the original Blue Note recording engineer and others who have worked with the tapes) would be the authority,. Just thought I'd throw it out for discussion. After November 1958 there was only a single master tape prepared for each LP, ending the previous era wherein mono and stereo versions had different editing (often a solo or two inserted from alternate takes into the master take and new intros or endings inserted, but differently for mono vs. stereo) and where sometimes either the mono or the stereo tapes had not survived to the present day. ...After 1958 and certainly 100% by late 1962 the stereo master was the SOURCE of the mono disk, not some separate and distinct mono master tape.

I want Brownie's vinyl and cigars.

Buck Clayton and Buddy Tate: Buck and Buddy(Prestige/Swingville 2017 mono) Paul Gonsalves: Tell It The Way It Is! (Impulse A-55) Johnny Hodges: Everybody Knows (Impulse A-61) This front cover would cost a fortune to do today. 12 3x3 high quality photos.

I read that your wallet does the talking, just like most consumers. And, you have no desire to join the crusade to stop non-Redbook Standard Cd's from being sold. What did I miss? Like I said in my first post, "I'm dense". If you have anything else to add regarding the subject of my original post, have at it.

I stand corrected, even some people that know what is occuring do not care for one reason or another.

Agreed 100%. Buying this format means supporting it, which I can’t see why any consumer in his right mind would want to do. It’s one thing when a new format is introduced, which is better in some aspects than the older, like SACD and DVD-A. But Cactus discs offer no advantages whatsoever for the consumer compared with CDs, but plenty of disadvantages, and serious ones at that. The people who pay attention to these issues and understand them are a very, very small percentage of consumers. It will take manufactures, labels, etc. and their lawyers to sort this out, I'm afraid. The public domain issues are also like this. The average consumer has no idea what is happening.

I've received confirmation, from a very reliable source, that these are from the digital master. Another opinion and more info.: Mar. 24, 2004 “Blue Note 65th Anniversary” Series, Limited Edition, by Toshiba EMI Our dream has come true - Toshiba EMI decided to release Blue Note reissues even in this year 2004! This series (20 titles) is to celebrate Blue Note's 65th anniversary. And this series has several specialities... This is the first Japanese LP reissues ever, from the tapes mastered by Rudy Van Gelder himself. And it must be noted that the cutting engineer of this series is the famous Toru Kotetsu, a superb cutting/pressing engineer in Japan. However in my humble opinion, this series actually sounds like that they are pressed using the same remastered tape as “24bit by RVG” CD reissues: stereo mixing has been changed to near-monaural soundscape; I feel the atmosphere of hiss-noise and cymbals sounds rather digitally. But it's not certain whether Toshiba used newly remastered analogue tape or digitally remastered tape. And all titles of this series come with coated cardboard jackets, as well as 180g heavy-weight thick flat vinyl. By all means, get some if you want to and let us know what you think, but I'm passing. Also, search around and you should be able to find them cheaper. Since Classic Records has duplicated many of the same titles they are another option. That same $50 could also get you nice analog 2nd and 3rd pressings of a few of the titiles.

What will the packaging be like? Will they be edited? With them being copy protected, I hope they play in my car!!

Mike Strickland: JAZZ, BLUES AND BOOGIE Just in case you like solo piano, also. Not a heavy weight by any stretch. This is just a fun CD. Mike's done other CD's(to pay bills), but this about only one that I like. Cool and bluesy, yet elegant and classy -very accessible.

I did not know so many liked this title. I absolutely love it. It definitely has a 'feel' to it. It's a great early morning, late night LP(yes, I have the LP) for me. It is very, very tastefully done. (Side note: I really love the sonics on this one. Unusually warm and has a lot of midrange weight. ) I just melt into this one. If you like this one, get Hampton Hawes/The Sermon, also.

I understood your post and I'm more drunk that RC. I don't think it was an audiofool that invented CD's. Just an engineer, who with his tests cried, "perfect sound, forever" and you all bought into it hook line and sinker. LMAO Also, are Japanese CD's going to be CPed soon?

Hendrix: Axis... Hendrix: War Heroes Dylan: New Morning Beatles: Revolver(Mono) Beatles: Meet the Beatles Miles: Birth of the Cool (2nd pressing?) Nice keepers from freebie box I'm going through.

Billie Holiay; The Billie Holiday Story(MCA) 2LP Looks like it's a re-issue from 1972 Decca sides from '45-'50. It's a great find because it was free and I like it! Seems much better than the Columbia box I got a few weeks ago.

This situation is like putting an LP on the turntable and getting silence, because the new LP's play backwards.
