If by this you mean, "I think the essence of BN vinyl is the immediacy and presence of the sound; it's right in front of you. I think RVG aimed for that effect. The best ones make you feel you are right in Rudy's living room. .... Perhaps some people get bugged by this "in your face" quality, but I like it. " IMO, two different animals and I've never taken note of a Riverside sound. I have a ton of OJC Riversides and a handlful of originals. What a great catalog Riverside has. I know Riverside has quite few records that are thought well of sound wise. Listened to some Bill Evans Riverside Lp's recently and nothing stood out other than the music, which is high praise in my book.

Do you coat the chicken with milk or egg before coating with flour mixure?? I forget and my sister(the best cook!!) is out.

Edison/ Davis: Jawbreakers Kenny Drew Trio Evans: Live at Shelly Manne's Hole Evans: How My Heart Sings All on the Riverside label prompted by the Riverside thread. The 'Public Domain' labels have got to be licking their chops over the early Riversides.

I wonder who the nut case was that started that thread?? Always good to pump Hoffman for info. He's a great guy, as you can tell. As you can read, I tried to bring up the unique sound of Blue Notes compared to the other labels RVG did. It's funny how you can get questions answered, but then it leads to more..... He may have heard the Blue Train tapes for some reissue. Not really sure. Next time I listen to my Prestige/New Jazz originals and reissues I will listen for that high end distortion that's more noticable on Blue Notes. I believe he and Kevin Gray are currently working on the Prestige 45rpm vinyl reissues for Acoustic Sounds. They just cost too damn much or I'd get a few. Regarding BN reissues, his responses lead me not to blame the remastering engineer as much. I wish he'd give Grudman, and others working on BN reissues, a call and tell them his findings.

Well, crap!! Sorry, you do not like it. I doubt anyone can do as complete a comparison as you. I only have the 1997 McMaster LP(nothing that iritates, so I guess it's ok) and an unopened RVG CD.

WINNER!!! Too easy for a man of your knowledge. PM me, and we'll figure out your prize.
-
Not as far as I know. Let's make this a little more interesting. Prize to the winner! You have to guess the one I have in mind. Your choice: A couple nice Cuban cigars. Burn of one of my Mosaic sets(your choice..the Hodges LP only is a good one). An LP from my collection. I have a couple doubles that I was going to sell or we can decide on another one. Phillip, if you are into cigars or LP's, PM me.

You are right!! 10" BLP 5020 The one I'm thinking of is from much later(after 1960).

What Blue Note cover photo(both front and back) was done by a member of the band? If there is more than one I aplogize, as I suck at trivia.

It's not just my vission getting worse, print is getting smaller. I do not even try to read CD liner notes. Thank god LP's are still around!!

No idea, but it's really sad. I guess it's happening under the radar of the original labels and big retailers. The titles/catalogues from the PD labels must to look great to the big retailers/distributers. It's seems to be the US against the rest of the world, also. What European owned labels are valuable and ready to become PD? Few, if any. The effects of this are endless and all bad, in my view. The average consumer(and even one's who know what's going on) could give a shit as long as he gets his Complete Blue Note Recordings of Miles Davis now, and cheap. Very complicated issue, but it's up to the original labels to do something about it. Simple press releases, ads and stickers on CD's would be a start. The longer they wait the harder it will be to control the snowball effect as more and more albums become PD.

It's illegal. Do a search at Tower for Jazz Factory and Definitive(Disconforme labels) labels and see how much Blue Note/Columbia/Mercury/etc. material shows up. As I've said before, the original labels need get a handle on this or it's going to be a mess. The average consumer has no idea what's going on.

Kenny Drew Quartet: Walkin' and Talkin' (Jazz West/King) Great addition to my collection. Joe Maini on alto and tenor. Never heard of him before.

They are ok, but you guys do a better job.

I like the Commercial forums where retailers post sales/specials or post about upcoming releases, but unless it remains civil they will quit posting. Spammers like Marissa still get hammered when they show up.

No way, but I guess it could happen. Time for me to start hitting the garage sales again.

Nice! Vinyl lives!! What cartridge did it come with? $400 is not bad. I'm sure there are a few of us around that have spent that much. Enjoy!!

Thanks for the tip, charlesp!! The Jimmy Scott looks good, too. Maybe next payday. Noticed you have LP12/Ittok, so do I. Had a Grado Reference on it for a few years, also.

Horace Silver: Cape Verdean Blues Original stereo, still in shrink for $6.99. Still looking for True Blue.

Flaws may be the wrong word. Personal preferences or things I do not like may be better. Read some of my previous posts to get an idea of what I mean. Off hand, I have Go!(M) and Gettin' Around(S) originals, and yes, his tone and message does come across nicely. When I play Swingin' Affair after other originals from this period I notice a few things: much cleaner sound(doesn't sound nearly as distorted and processed) without being overly bright; highs are actually nice and detailed on this reissue(very real ring and snap and even a touch of real decay); the dynamic range is still limited, but it seems a bit more lifelike; overall there is a more relaxed, lifelike sound and presentation of the music. Bottom line, I like this one more than many(not all) of the originals/reissues from this period. Hope this made some sense and your mileage may vary. In your opinion, do your Blue Notes have any "flaws' or things you do not like about them?

Had to look at my copy after reading this and sure enough, 2 ears on one side.

I think this being out in 45rpm was a typo, I saw it too. Looks like it's just 33 1/3 for now. Maybe later as a 45rpm???
