I believe there are a few groups that are into the mono thing. Huge mono speakers(horns) and 1.5 watt amps. Then there are the the guys who have two arms on their tt, one with stereo cartridge and the other with a mono cartridge(back in vogue). I would actualy like to try the mono cartridge thing. Grado makes some cheap ones.

Nitty Gritty Record Doctor II Record Cleaning
wolff replied to Dmitry's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Good machine!! I'll take....................your new one for $100. This would sell in 15 minutes at Audiogon, but you were probably giving the guys here a shot at it first. -
I know what you mean, but all is not lost if you want to upgrade your tonearm cable. Unless I'm mistaken, your cable runs fron the bottom of the tonearm(usually the connector is a DIN plug..5 little holes in it) out to your pre-amp/amp, where it connects with RCA's. Many after market tonearm cables are available. Ranging in price from $75-$1000 . Do a search for tonearm cables. Many high-end interconnect and speaker cable companies include them in their line. You just will not see them in the brick and morter stores.

I upgrade, maybe slightly, my audio once every couple years or so. I have no problem buying used, so often I sell for about(or more than) what I paid. When I retire I'll probably get the most insane turntable set-up I can afford. I believe, all things being equal, the source is most important. My phono cartridges need to be replaced every 2/3 years. Some just need a new stylus, while others need to be rebuilt(good as new but half the price as new). Have gotten these used, also. One thing I have to watch out for is wanting an expensive system after hearing it. I've gone into hi-fi stores and friend's homes and have heard some amazing stereo. When I go home and listen to mine, I'm a little let down, but it passes. Since I have a lot of music(like most off you) I am picky or selective about what I buy. If I listened to 2 different albums a day for 4 years I'd be at the tale end of my collection. I've sold quite a bit of stuff, also. What Claude said about upgrading and hearing your old collection anew is very true and possibly more economical than buying more music or upgrading to the lastest digital or vinyl reissued wonder.

JRVG and others..free shipping from Japan
wolff replied to wolff's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Was this worth posting? I really do not know as I do not buy these. When I saw free shipping and prices under $30 I assumed it was a good deal. -
Great! It may even sound better after the cartridge 'breaks in", I know mine did. It's nice how most of the new(and even older) tt are built. My tt is 20 years old, but if anything breaks it's easy to fix, except the tonearm. Replacement parts are readily available. If the motor goes it will be costly, but still worth it to slap another one in there. If you do not drop the tt, the bearing should last a long time as long as you keep it oiled per instructions. I change oil every year or so.

What numbers did your set(s) get?
wolff replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Vinyl: Herbie Nichols: no number Bud Powell: no number Mingus/Candid: 2750 Tina Brooks: 4925 Mulligan/Baker: 3483 Parlan: 689 Thad Jones: 3070 Chaloff: 2527 Don Cherry: 1786 Mingus/CBS: 1964 Hodges 51-55: 1926 Desmond/Hall: no number I don't need no stinking numbers! Why no numbers, if I did care? -
Much has been written and discussed comparing the Classics to the originals since Classic started the series. Most complained that the Classics were too bright and lacked the nice string tones and 'bloom' of the originals. Many liked the better bass, detail and dynamics of some of the Classics. The hard to find originals were selling for $100+. Prices have come down a bit.

Hey, that's it!! I just noticed, in the dead wax, "DMM", the dreaded 'direct metal master'. That may explain the sound being iffy. To continue in a Hawkins vein, I'm playing Swingville 4001 "Things Ain't What They Used To Be". It's an original double Lp that combines TAWTUTB and "Years Ago". Dvorak Cello Concerto/Piatigorsky/Munch/BSO Rivers: Contours(too dark to see if it has 'ear' ) Donald Byrd: Royal Flush (too dark to see if it has 'ear' ) Love the trumpet/baritone contrasts...Hopr this doen't piss anyone off, but for a white boy Pepper Adams could find the groove.

Wow! That's a good one that I've seen before, too. These sellers creep me out.

Why upgrade the CDs then? On a mediocre stereo (or worse) the audio differences will most likely not be noticeable at all. The money spent replacing the same music could go to buying new music (or upgrading your stereo so that CD upgrades would make a noticeable difference). $5,000 should buy a pretty nice system, if not "great." Am wondering what the problem is with your system that, having invested a good bit of money in it, you prefer the Bose boombox (which alone costs about $500 if I recall correctly). I don't mean any of this in a hostile manner, just can't really sort out the conflicting ideas in your post. This is a new breed of consumer brought about by the digital age and it's big buck advertising. It all started when CD's had the tendency to sound like shit when promising otherwise. Now, it's a dreadmill trying to catch up , but going I know not where. Possibly, another stereotype to include in this thread. The above has been in jest, do whatever makes you happy!!!!!!!!!

Glad you are liking your new stuff!! I'm drooling. Does the wife think you are crazy? Those amps must be moving off the shelves pretty good. I'd like to put one of these Audio Notes together.

I remember when I bought this one. The guy looked at me like he was really glad to be selling it or was surprised to be selling it. Definitely a bad cover. Looks xeroxed. One of those slightly rare pressings that are worth $1.99.

Here is one thing ebay mentions about when to leave FB. When should I leave feedback? Leave feedback after completing any purchase or sale on eBay. I guess their is a grey area on when one considers a sale/purchase completed.
-
I would love to have nice originals of all the Living Strereo titles I have the Classic reissues of, as I'm sure they sound great(much warmer with incredible tone). Hope you didn't buy too many Classics.
-
No, feedback is completely optional. Nobody ever has to leave feedback since it is voluntary. If I were a seller, I would never leave feedback first. If you are a seller you may want to make sure the transaction is okay with the buyer before you leave feedback. As fucked up as it is, there are buyers (and sellers) who just want to leave negatives simply play around. I've heard too many "horror" stories of sellers who leave a positive and then have an asshole buyer leave a negative for some stupid reason. Unfortunately, because of the horror stories sellers should leave feedback once the transaction is complete (i.e. buyer is satisfied). I thought I read it somewhere, but I guess I'm wrong. First time for everything. There are sellers I have learned to trust and buy from and they leave FB first.

Melodiya was the Soviet record label, State-run[as everything else]. The sound quality ranged from really bad to terrible. Lots of distortion, lots of surface noise, sucky vinyl. Melodiya, that's it. I got lucky on this one as it sounds pretty damn good. When I use to play it on my old set-up the surface noise was pretty bad. With my fairly new Garrott Brothers P77 I have to strain to hear surface noise and Hawkins sounds great!!
-
I never see them around here anymore. Have no idea if they were legal or not. Thin paper(like modern British inports) and the vinyl on this one is ok. When I first bought it, it was a bit noisy. I have upgraded turntable, arm and cartridge since then and it was dead quiet with nice sound when I played it today.
-
Yep, it's in my top 20 or so, but it's the only BN Rivers I have on vinyl, so I still want to get this set at some point.
-
Another thing.. I believe Ebay rules state the seller is to leave PF as soon as he receives payment. Many, and I mean many sellers do not do this. I used to leave feedback before the seller did, but I do not anymore.
-
Ideally, you should leave NF, but....Retaliatory negative feedback or feedback intimidation is common on Ebay and there is no recourse other than posting a short response. Here is a quick story. Bought LP that was described as stone mint. It had a big scratch and seller refused to refund. I told him I would leave NF and he said if I do that he will leave NF on me. I left him NF and he left me NF. Ebay did nothing. Paypal refunded my $$$, but NF is still there. This is a very rare case and I would do the same again. Since he already left you PF (he certainly is doing damage control. LMAO) maybe there is nothing he could do if you left him NF. Ebay makes it sound like their system is great, but there are some flaws.

Coleman Hawkins on Verve. I do not know the title as it is a Russian pressing and everything but song titles are in Russian. I'll have to do search to get title. First song is "I'll Never Be The Same". Any other Russian pressings out there?

That's what I thought, but I see it so rarely I wasn't sure. I'd have been all over it if the music budget wasn't shot.
