  1. Khan Jamal Dark Warrior Steeplechase- great Charles Tyler to heard on this excellent set. Billed as a digital recording it sounds very good to my ears. Johnny Dyani is no slouch either hear. Only Jamal in my collection , highly recommended.
  2. I know it's daft asking about things you've already ordered but any thoughts on these 2 LPs I've just ordered. AMG is pretty positive about them for what it's worth Subject to change When was that both on About Time Lately been spinning Rag bush... (Novus) and Air Time (nessa) and enjoying both greatly so I pulled the trigger on the two above. Good move?
  3. The Louis Cottrell Trio- Bourbon Street- N.O.\Living Legends- Riverside Japanese reissue, amazing and wonderful music, next up keeping the New Orleans feeling going New Orleans today volume two- an anthology of music from the crescent city 77 records not exactly hifi but spirited playing by a large and varied cast.
  4. When's the new CD due out ?
  5. Hang on in there with the vinyl. Some 'snap crackle and pop' is a fact of life, although totally agree that gouges are a no-no. The right LP on the right system is nirvana - trust me I've added a powered phono stage this week which raises things to another level and brings out an incredible richness in the sound. To get that on CD (not sure it's possible) would likely cost a King's ransom. I dipped my toe in 4 years ago. 500 LPs later I have no regrets. I have bought very few new pressings but I'm constantly amazed by the quality of LPs that can be picked up pretty inexpensively. Whilst I like LP sound CD I really see little justification for paying for vanity products either new or used.
  6. Street jazz, is that what you're suggesting this art form will be reduced to, surely not. Pleasantly evocative of a past era , I'd certainly have stopped and enjoyed it if I'd been walking by. Have I missed the point ?
  7. Frederick Roach - All that's good- (NYC -stereo- side 2 DG)- excellent recent purchase, way better than AMG would lead you believe. next up Bill Holman - Bill Holman Band -JVC - 1987 recording
  8. Hmm - not my experience at all. The ones I have (Carrere) sound very 'thin', to say the least. ahh...I'm talking about Musidisc editions ( earlier?), the few Carrere LPs ( mostly OJC copies) I have are very variable. Lush Life is very good and meets the Esquire version head on , where as Art Peppers Modern Jazz Classics sounds like mud- very poor indeed compared to a Vogue mono of the same session.
  9. Art Ensemble - Urban Bushmen ECM , sides 1 and 2
  10. FREDDIE ROACH - ALL THAT'S GOOD FREDDIE ROACH - MO' GREENS PLEASE Just secured the above two on ebay, don't really know what to expect of All that's good but I'm certainly intrigued as against prejudice I really have enjoyed other with voices BNs by Hutch and Hill,, so if this is anywhere in there league I'll be happy...
  11. I have found the French LPs in this series to sound great. Better than OJC in several cases. On the whole however, I've found the OJC vinyls to be uniformly excellent, even the Ace UK ones which state that they're digital mastered !! Whilst I generally avoid these I found they held up very well against equivalent Esquire/ original Prestige issues. I don't pay over £6 per OJC. Pressings always seem dead quite.
  12. Harry Miller Quintet- Down South- Vara Jazz - excellent recent purchase in mint condition

    Art Pepper

I've really struggled to enjoy the Galaxy box. I got it ultra cheap from 2001 and perhaps as a result have never warmed to it as whole. Perhaps too much of good thing. Late Pepper's wretched intensity can be hard to endure over each of the set's long CDs. Love 50s Contemporary /Omega Tape Pepper, particularly the session with Carl Perkins.
  14. Yes, great double set. Mine's on an MPS twofer from the mid-70s. Have you got hold of those Rearward/Schema Clarke/Boland LPs Clunky? Those are fantastic too. Not yet, so far I've got Off Limits, Fellini and the two volumes from Ronnie's in original UK vinyl editions, a Verve Elite CD with Getz and Sax No End/All blues on MPS. I had assumed the Rearward/Schema LPs might be a bit dodgy soundwise.?
  15. Kenny Clarke and Francy Boland- Volcano Vol.1 Live at Ronnie's- Polydor UK, great sound and well hard swing set...perhaps my favourite by this outfit
  16. I was a few steps ahead in the line that day, thanks Jim....
  17. Steve Lacy- Andrea Centazzo- Clangs Ictus Records 0001- fine Lacy set with Italian percussionist, I don't have Centazzo on anything else (afaik) but he responds well to Steve's exploration. The Owl is the highlight of the set
  18. I'll bet. But it's "Monterose" rather than "Montrose." Crucial distinction there - and sorry to nitpick! quite correct, two very different tenors
  19. That's one of the Lps from the Mosaic box, I think. I've seen a few of those London Atlantics around with material from this set. I'll bet it sounds good in the London pressing ! It sounds very fine, I find the London's on the whole a lot better than US Atlantics of similar vintage, although I've never been able to do a direct A-B comparison. I've a whole pile of Sydney De Paris Atlantic Londons which easily outclass the pressing quality of the one Sydney De Paris US pressing (On the Riviera) that I have. Hardly scientific, but I'm quite happy when I can get a nice London in decent condition. Stereo copies always seem much rarer which presumably reflects the market in the UK at the time of issue.
  20. Fun on the Frets- Early Jazz Guitar- Yazoo various inc. Carl Kress Arnette Cobb- Blow Arnett, Blow Ace-Prestige, says from digital masters but sounds none the worse for it. Decent session but not a patch on Very Saxy ok at £2 The Eureka Jazz Band of New Orleans London- Atlantic - stereo ! right now The Dedication Series/Vol. 1 The Bopmasters, Sonny Criss/Kenny Dorham , generous pairing of KD quintet with Montrose ex. ABC-Paramount and Criss' Peacock session with Ole Hansen and Wynton Kelly. The Dorham sessions is the better of the two. Next Warne Marsh - Warne Out- Interplay
  21. Happy Birthday Garth, what will you spin today Quill, Gullin , Konitz, De Franco,? what ever have a great one !!!
  22. Do I need/want the Manone/Prima, I may have to pass on this one as I've only just received the Miles 65-68 vinyl set ( no regrets-sounds great) and not so long ago the Matthews select/Nelson and the Gillespie euro sets from amazon uk sellers.? how many Wing vocals can I handle?
  23. Any chance we'll ever see you in the UK?
  24. I'm dabbling with some Blues lately, I'm not well oriented as to the different sub-types. Lately I've enjoyed albums by Jesse Fuller (Goodtime jazz and Prestige sessions) and rather rawer but more exciting stuff by Robert Pete Williams ( a nice if rather casual LP with Roosevelt Sykes) . Other than more of these two, any suggestions of where next ? I've a Bukka White Lp on the way following Chuck's nod in his direction.
  25. Up- had my Macbook a month now, pretty seamless conversion from Windows, no regrets, nice software - great package. Wireless network with my PC working just fine
