  1. Jazz House Records UK The above site is highly recommended for CD and vinyl jazz. Alan Ross who runs it has a large inventory of stuff with regular monthly updates emailed to the interested. I have no connection with Alan other than being a highly satisfied customer for the past 3 or 4 years. Highly reliable grading and excellent service in my experience and always a pleasure to deal with. Shipping rates strike me as highly reasonable. Prices for LPs and CDs are also very reasonable especially for OOP material IMO. His latest email has the following line Recommend a friend. If you know of any jazz vinyl or cd collectors who don't order from JHR, please give them our email/ web address. When they make contact & mention your name, their first order & your next order will get a 10% discount. The strengthening dollar should help US members.....I gather though he has no further copies of Mike Taylor Trio
  2. I suggested Clifford try www.jazzhouserecords.co.uk as copy was listed , Alan who runs the service might have another. I got mine from him about a year ago
  3. Get a mac - as a mac user of 10 months, I have more or less abandoned my PC and use my Macbook constantly.
  4. For relatively early jazz guitar I like Carl Kress on the compilation Fun on the Frets released on Yazoo, How about Billy Bauer Plectrist- it's a real pity so little was released under his own name. It's fairly conservative compared to his work with Tristano or Konitz but offers a different sound to other 50s guitarists. Now available from the usual Spanish/Andorran suspects.
  5. agree with all of the above. I enjoy popping in although I've not read the entire thread, many thanks for taking the time, it's a lovely not-so-little treasure chest.
  6. The tenor player is Jean Toussaint , the guitarist looks like one of the members of Hue and Cry
  7. What's this release, not heard of this , any other details or titles ???
  8. Not many over there actually seem to listen to the music... Judging by SH response to Claude's question I'm not sure he's listened to what he's mastered. You'd think he'd be more interested in the end product than that.
  9. I have half a dozen MM 45rpm sets. For True Blue, Night in Tunisia, Bluesnik & Soul Station I can only compare to McMaster 1980s CDs and also the RVG of TB. The MM sets all sound better, Tunisia significantly so, but as has been noted it'll surely depend as much on the quality of your CD player or TT , as any issues of mastering. I've not got any of the AP issues- they seem to get less, favourable comments (is there a reason?). I'm not sure I'll buy many more as on my system everything sounds good to my ears ( CDs of all ages, LPs, MDs etc). Perhaps the cheapest upgrades are made to your hifi as all of your software can sound better.
  10. Anyone into Konitz's output on Philology, I recenty picked up .... L'Age Mur with Rava Inside Cole Porter 12 Gershwin in 12 keys any others recommended?
  11. ELLA FITZGERALD Live at the Savoy - 1939-40- no vocals JOE MOONEY QUARTET vols 1 & 2: 'Joe Breaks the Ice' NAT PIERCE 'Boston Bust Out' BUDDY RICH & His Orchestra And His Legendary '47-48 Orchestra BOYD RAEBURN & His Orchestra 'The Transcription Performances 1946' these are my top Metronome picks ,also add the Basie/Young Jubilee set
  12. Mine's got a nice blue cover ( fairly flimsy) with CT pictured, vinyl is quiet as can be......
  13. I'll need to get these as I have and enjoy the live MPS and Hat-art sessions by the same group
  14. Up for Cecil.....not sure why but my interest in Taylor has been slowly rising over the years , only recently for something to really click in my cerebrum to allow me to properly "hear" and enjoy his stunning work. Currently enjoying Celebrated Blazons, I realise that I have very few CT solo sessions , a fact that I must rectify. I have Spring of 2Jays (one side solo only) and an Intakt session.
  15. This is a great thread Chris , keep it up - great reading, thanks
  16. I'm delighted with my 10 month old Macbook (1 G only), best computer i've ever owned/used. I'll be sticking to Mac from now on...
  17. wow to all three of these , especially Bluesnik which is a favourite !!!!
  18. Just picked this up, very interesting date, more laid back than I was expecting , quite cool in places really....
  19. Slowly made my way to Disc B. The group version of Noonah is outstanding. The studio version of Sing is breathtaking, leaving this off the original LP must have been a hard choice.
  20. Miles & Gil - (Columbia long box) got for a good price at the weekend, lovely music of course but I'm at a loss to understand some of the liner notes from Schaap or the sequencing of the extra material on discs 4,5 & 6
  21. The Nat Adderley was on SACD - now which disc has better sound? The Hawk is available on a great sounding Mobile Fidelity SACD. Anyone able to compare the various versions of The Hawk Flies High?? I note that Mobile Fidelity do a SACD version and an LP version too, such choice but it's perhaps my favourite 50s Hawkins session.
  22. I've been really pleased wit my Rega P3 bought about 4 years ago. Now fitted with a Denon DL 103R MC cartridge. The P3 has I believe had a bit of an upgrade in spec and price but it's a decent budget TT - I'm very content with it, but then again I've never heard anything better (but clearly better exists !!)
  23. Anthony Braxton For Trio Arista - in preparation for the Mosaic (possibly) this is hardly what I'd call accessible material,......... how will the Mosaic cope with try to emulating the weird diagrams offered on the original cover , insert etc. Perhaps Braxton's muse will be more easily assimilated without all that........
  24. I won't be getting this one having Us3, Headin South, Happy frame.., On the spur of the moment, Speakin my piece as CDs or LP. I regret to say that I find Us3 and Headin South to be amongst the dullest Blue Notes issued under Alfred Lion's tenure in charge. The other sets i have are pretty brilliant which is equally infuriating given how dull the trio sessions are.
