Delfeayo Marsalis and Uptown Jazz Orchestra, Jazz Party (Troubadour Jass)
I needed a jazz party, and this joyous, rollicking, hard swinging recording, sounding exactly like the band sounds live, fit the bill.
Cannonball Adderley, En Route (Mercury)
Prestige Blues Swingers featuring Coleman Hawkins, Stasch (Prestige Swingville)
Art Blakey, Elvin Jones, Philly Joe Jones, Charlie Persip, Drum Night at Birdland (Roulette)
Yes, I'm just kidding around myself. I'm not actually sure what I think of Herb Alpert; he's someone who was on TV a lot when I was a kid. To make a career out of playing the trumpet in the United States is actually an impressive achievement, regardless of the music.
Three years ago, I could have easily seen Herb Alpert at the New Orleans Jazz Fest, though to my knowledge he was sans Mariachi Brass. Earlier in the day, I heard Lee Konitz. But somehow Herb Alpert was the closer on the main jazz stage. A travesty, for sure. I'm afraid I passed on Herb, even in the absence of a super appealing alternative and went to hear Lisa Fischer in the Blues Tent. I feel no regrets to this day.
