  3. Delfeayo Marsalis and Uptown Jazz Orchestra, Jazz Party (Troubadour Jass) I needed a jazz party, and this joyous, rollicking, hard swinging recording, sounding exactly like the band sounds live, fit the bill.

  12. Yes, I'm just kidding around myself. I'm not actually sure what I think of Herb Alpert; he's someone who was on TV a lot when I was a kid. To make a career out of playing the trumpet in the United States is actually an impressive achievement, regardless of the music.
  13. When I drank alcohol, I preferred cognac; but I stopped drinking any alcohol many years ago.
  14. I suggest you have another margarita and listen to some bossa nova while I contemplate opportunities lost.
  15. Three years ago, I could have easily seen Herb Alpert at the New Orleans Jazz Fest, though to my knowledge he was sans Mariachi Brass. Earlier in the day, I heard Lee Konitz. But somehow Herb Alpert was the closer on the main jazz stage. A travesty, for sure. I'm afraid I passed on Herb, even in the absence of a super appealing alternative and went to hear Lisa Fischer in the Blues Tent. I feel no regrets to this day.
  16. Sonny Criss, Out of Nowhere (Muse) Shorty Rogers and His Giants, Gigi Jazz (RCA)
  17. Nicholas Payton, Relaxin' with Nick (Smoke Sessions)
  18. Thank you. I have used the gift card against the cost of the new Paul Desmond Mosaic set.
  19. Illinois Jacquet Flies Again (Roulette)
  20. George Coleman, The Quartet (Smoke Sessions)
  21. Budd Johnson and the Four Brass Giants (Riverside)
  22. The Source is a good one; wish I hadn't missed the Art Blakey tribute.
  23. Last Sunday I did find paper towels in the grocery store for the first time in six weeks or so; it was thrilling.
  24. The anthology, That Devilin' Tune, starts with recordings from the 1890s.
