  1. I don't know about that. Last Saturday night, I heard the Afro Bop Alliance Big Band, and as the drummer leader put it at the end of the concert, "our new CD is for sale out front and if you liked the concert can you buy one so we can put gas in the van to drive to our next concert in Oklahoma?"
  2. I looked back at my emails from Big Ears, and the last reference to the detailed line-up announcement was in the January 14 email: "The detailed schedule outlining performance times and venues for all shows will be announced later, most likely in late February or early March."
  3. Last night, the Puerto Rican singer iLe at the Cambridge Room of the House of Blues in Dallas. iLe (to my ears) is fantastic, and every song she performed in her 90 minute set (mostly originals by iLe, her sister and her grandmother) was worthwhile.
  4. I believe the last reference to the detailed schedule in their emails said the detailed schedule would come out the first week of March.
  5. The Dallas Tower Records store arrived fairly late in the company's history; I liked going there. The Tower Records by Lincoln Center had a nice selection. There was a small Tower Records in the basement of Trump Tower on Fifth Avenue that I went to a fair number of times. One had to pass through the lobby of that monument to bad taste to get there.
  6. Jennifer Koh and Vijay Iver Cliburn at the Modern March 14, 2020 - 2:00pm Recognized for intense, commanding performances, delivered with dazzling virtuosity and technical assurance, violinist Jennifer Koh is a forward-thinking artist dedicated to exploring a broad and eclectic repertoire, while promoting diversity and inclusivity in classical music. She was named 2016 Musical America Instrumentalist of the Year, won top prizes at the Tchaikovsky Competition and Concert Artist Guild Competition, and received an Avery Fisher Career Grant. She has expanded the contemporary violin repertoire through a wide range of commissioning projects and has premiered more than 70 works written especially for her. In spring 2018, she launched Limitless, a project celebrating the collaborative relationship between composer and performer; duo commissions are played by Koh and the composers themselves. Her partner for this special Cliburn debut is leading-edge composer-pianist Vijay Iyer, whose 22 remarkably diverse recordings have earned him top-album accolades from the likes of The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, Rolling Stone, and NPR; ECHO Klassik Awards; and a Grammy nomination, among other honors. For ticket information, call 817.212.4280 or visit www.cliburn.org

  17. It actually says March 8; so bad typo by me.
  18. The Blue Note ad in the new issue of Jazz Times lists Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, Just Coolin', described as an unreleased Van Gelder recording from March 11, 1959 with Lee Morgan, Hank Mobley, Bobby Timmons and Jamie Merritt. Six songs; two previously unissued compositions (Quick Trick and Jimerick). No release date is specified.
  19. I do recollect that when I was in college and, based on my Mingus obsession, trying to understand Ellington, I had a copy of the Afro-Eurasian Eclipse and the Prestige issue of his 1943 Carnegie Hall concert. The combination of the Chinoiserie and Acht O'clock Rock on Afro-Eurasian Eclipse, and the side of Strayhorn compositions from the 1943 concert (ranging from Johnny Come Lately to the bleak Dirge), opened the Ellington door fully wide for me. Dynasty, I found a used copy at the long-gone Collector's Records and loved it from the first moment.
