You might want to try the Tone Poet reissue of volume 2 of Joe Henderson at the VV; it sounds amazing/ with you are there sound.

Actually, the Village Vanguard, if you actually go to hear music there, sounds great. The sound is perfectly balanced. You can hear from any seat in the house. It is fabulous.
  3. Ha ha. Jackie Venson is a pretty young woman from Austin. She went to Berklee as a Classical pianist and switched to guitar in her last year. That was nine years ago. She's a hybrid rock/blues/soul player. Amazing guitar player (plays a custom Gibson Les Paul made for her in their Nashville factory), terrific voice, and writes excellent songs. Not a jazz player to my knowledge. She's out of my usual areas of interest, but I stumbled across her when I went to see Vieux Farka Toure in Houston last year; she was the opening act, playing guitar and singing, using a sampler to back herself up (she plays all the instruments). I liked her immediately, and then even more when she joined Vieux Farka Toure onstage during his set. Now, every night from her house in Austin she plays a one hour live concert; plays some of her own songs solo and with sampler backup--then she does remixes of her own songs, jamming on guitar. Turning her up to 11 every night.
  4. Every night at 9:30 CST, Jackie Venson on facebook live. Highlight of the day without fail.
  5. The studio recording of Senor Carlos was on a rare somewhat commercially oriented McCoy Tyner recording, but I recall hearing thrilling versions of the composition live.
  6. The best sources of his playing in his later years are his recordings as pianist of the Avery Sharpe Trio
  7. I saw play as a leader a couple of times; he was excellent.
  8. This was one of the first jazz records I ever purchased, probably in 1974. An unpretentious, pleasing record.
  9. Dave Brubeck, The Last Set at Newport (Atlantic) Lester Young, Jammin' the Blues/Apollo Theater (Jazz Anthology)
  10. Gene Krupa, Sing Sing Sing (Clef)
  11. He does not sound like he has only two solos to me.
  12. Well, there isn't exactly a booming jazz scene here. But I would say that the two best tenor saxophonists in the area that I'm familiar with are Rachella Parks Washington (in Fort Worth) and Shelley Carrol (in Dallas), and both sound like Texas tenors to me (especially Rachella).
  13. David Newman and James Clay, The Sound of the Wide Open Spaces (Riverside) The Definitive Jazz Scene, volume 2 (Impulse)
  14. Brandee Younger and Dezron Douglas are live aright now.
  15. Well, I want to go to all five sessions.
  16. I recollect seeing him with Tony Williams, and as a leader with Geri Allen, Lenny White and James Spaulding in the group.
  17. As I recall, the small record players I owned as a kid to listen to my Beatles/Hendrix/Jefferson Airplane, etc. albums were stereo, so this warning was always purely theoretical to me.
  18. Erroll Garner, Concert by the Sea (Columbia)
  19. Brandee Younger facebook page has her duo livestream by the Jazz Museum of Harlem from yesterday, with Dezron Douglas. https://www.facebook.com/harpista
  20. 8-9 CST tonight: Tom McDermott and Aurora Nealand on facebook live. https://www.facebook.com/tom.mcdermott.12?fref=search&__tn__=%2Cd%2CP-R&eid=ARBmS4lyvlmdBNw10bw9qO44HlVVS-X8GBRVpX7e63AI82wAlcOKzI0VmowucelSMAvzArdKK2dI9yMM 9:30-10:30 CST tonight (and apparently every night): Jackie Venson on facebook live. https://www.facebook.com/jackievenson/
  21. Teddy Wilson, And Then They Wrote (Columbia) Max Roach Plus Four, Moon Faced Starry Eyed (Mercury)
  22. I liked the record. He sort of sounds like a combination of Jimmy Witherspoon and Jimmy Rushing.
  23. The LP lists Wilfred Middlebrooks as the bassist on three of the tracks, Red Mitchell on the other five.
  24. My mono LP has eight tracks. Oddly, Howard Rumsey does not play on the record--notes say so he could man the control room.
  25. Mose Allison, The Transfiguration of Hiram Brown (Columbia) Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse All Stars with Lee Morgan, Benny Golson and Wynton Kelly, Double or Nothin' (Liberty)
