They will get you there (downtown Houston) in under 4 hours in reasonable comfort (very comfortable seats with wifi and a stewardess serving drinks and snacks like you are on an airplane and it's 1970 again). Both of the event’s weekends will run Thursday through Sunday, April 25 – 28 and May 2 – 5. The Festival also announced that the new day will be “Locals Thursday,” which allows anyone with a valid Louisiana ID to purchase up to two discount tickets at the gate on that day. “Locals Thursday” discount tickets will again be only $50. The lineup for the 50th anniversary Festival and ticketing information will be released in December. Started in 1970, Jazz Fest annually celebrates the unique culture of New Orleans and the region drawing fans from around the country and around the world.

Joe Chambers was the drummer for the Mingus and Friends concert. I made the mistake of ordering the CD set from Bandcamp instead of amazon, and I still haven't received it.

I did see Jaco as a leader live once in Austin (1982 I think), and Joe Zawinul at the Caravan of Dreams a few years later--the latter was especially good, so yes I missed out on something I probably would have loved. From last weekend's concert I attended, Dejohnette Coltrane Garrison, Matt Garrison sounds adventurous to me.

One of my musical follies was that when Weather Report was active, I was an acoustic jazz snob, generally rejected their music, and never saw them live. Thank goodness those chains have been cast aside.

I should have mentioned that it is a good idea to buy the Marathon pass in advance because they do typically sell out one or both nights.

Basie in London (Verve)

The first time I heard him was at a Freddie Hubbard engagement, when he was still in high school. Freddie was in top technical form that night, playing as the sole horn with an ace rhythm section (I don't recall but it likely included some or all of Larry Willis, Idris Muhammad and Walter Booker). Towards the end of the second set, Freddie, sounding reluctant, announced that the club had asked him to let a local player sit in with him, which proved to be Roy Hargrove. When asked what song, Roy called a Kenny Dorham tune, It was rather amazing how well he played, and you could see that Freddie Hubbard was impressed. Another concert that stands out was at the Jazz Gallery, where he was paired in a dual trumpet front line with Marcus Belgrave, for an exceptional concert.
