I recollect seeing her live just one time--she just played a couple of songs in duet with an alto player in a concert featuring multiple artists--her short set was by far the best part of the concert.
-
Maxine Sellers, Folk Singer (Prestige Folklore), Jack Wilson, Song for my Daughter (Blue Note Liberty), and Johnny Griffin and Eddie Davis, Blues Up and Down (Jazzland)

Which Jazz box set are you grooving to right now?
kh1958 replied to Cliff Englewood's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Columbia and RCA Live Recordings of Louis Armstrong and His All Stars, Disc 4. -
I've seen Buddy Guy there twice, Robert Cray and B.B. King. All enjoyable experiences. The worst thing about it is actually that smoking is allowed in the casino.
-
Sonny Criss, The Beat Goes On (Prestige, promo, from the listening collection of Music City), and Lou Donaldson, Pretty Things (Blue Note)
-
Johnny Hodges, Triple Play (RCA)

Only one version of Love in Outer Space (acoustic piano and drums).

What live music are you going to see tonight?
kh1958 replied to mikeweil's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
No, this was a quintet--Dayna Stephens on tenor sax, Maurice Brown trumpet, Johnathan Kreisberg guitar, Jason Faulkner on drums. I didn't find it bizarre--rather smoking hot. There was a rap by Maurice Brown on one song, but the rest of the song and his trumpet playing made up for it. In addition, at one point Lonnie Smith stopped the show, wandered off for a bit, and with the help of the sound man plugged in his cane, and proceeded to play the electric walking cane. I guess that was bizarre but I thought it amusing. -
Listening to the first disc of the newly released In Some Far Place, Roma '77, on Strut/Art Yard. It's rather good. Piano (mostly)/keyboards with some drum accompaniment. Pretty well recorded too.

I enjoyed both a lot, but preferred Lonnie Smith. The Lensic is a terrific venue. -

Tutu Jones at Tolbert's in Grapevine. A restaurant with a live music stage in "historic" Grapevine and a meager crowd--nonetheless a superb performance by a Texas blues master. -

KRTU 40th Anniversary Concert Date: Oct 7 2016 - 7:00pm Location: Laurie Auditorium, Trinity University KRTU Celebrates 40 Years of Broadcasting and Expansion with Concert Join Trinity University’s KRTU 91.7 FM in celebrating an important moment in San Antonio’s history as the community-supported radio station expands its broadcast signal! At the KRTU 40th Anniversary Concert on Friday, October 7, 2016 at 7 p.m., KRTU will “flip the switch” and go live with the significantly stronger 91.7 FM, reaching beyond the 1604 loop into the Hill Country. Legendary saxophonist Benny Golson will grace the stage of Laurie Auditorium in Trinity University’s Richardson Communications Center for the concert, which is open to the public with free tickets available in advance for a suggested donation to the non-profit radio station. At age eighty-seven, the NEA Jazz Master Benny Golson is one of the last surviving links to the Golden Age of modern jazz, ushered in by the likes of Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Bud Powell and others in the early 1940s. Having recorded over 30 albums and written more than 300 compositions, Golson has made major contributions to the world of jazz with such standards as “Killer Joe” and “Whisper Not.” The concert will open with a performance by Henry Brun & The Latin Playerz, an internationally touring ensemble led by Grammy Award-winning percussionist Henry Brun. Witness history as KRTU 91.7 FM launches its newly expanded broadcast signal at the KRTU 40th Anniversary Concert, enlarging its reach from 549 square miles to 3059 square miles with an increase in signal strength from 8,900 watts to 32,000 watts. The “KRTU Tower Initiative” will ensure the radio station’s ability to reach the rapidly expanding population of the community it serves. Financed with support from Trinity University and individual donors, donations received during the concert will go directly toward the KRTU Tower Initiative. KRTU is a FCC-licensed non-commercial, educational radio station (NCE) broadcasting from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas. A 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, KRTU is community-supported through individual donations from listeners and underwriting from local businesses and organizations. In 2002, KRTU transitioned to jazz as its primary format, and is one of only 52 FCC-licensed jazz radio stations in the country. Since 1976 when it was founded by Trinity University students, KRTU has provided programming that is educational, engaging, innovative, and most importantly, a reflection of the community from which it broadcasts. The KRTU 40th Anniversary Concert is sponsored by Palo Santo Records of Dallas, Texas.
