A bullet train would be awesome--a 90 minute train ride from Dallas to Houston, supposedly to be complete by 2021. NIcole Mitchell is an AACM artist, but not, I think, related to Roscoe Mitchell. I'm not that familiar with her actually, I only have one CD of hers, but I like it. Driving from Dallas to Austin for a concert has been in my range for a long while. Traffic is worse now though. Dallas to Houston is a bit far for a turnaround on the same day, but I've done it a couple of times in the last year or so (Wayne Shorter and Dave Burrell). Dallas to San Antonio, that's even farther, too far to come back after the concert.

I was excited to see Bernard Wright solo at a venue a few minutes from my office. Alas, it was not to be; apparently he missed a flight from New York to Dallas earlier in the day. Instead, there was a last minute substitute, a UNT professor who I would say has a penchant for Bill Evans. I wasn't feeling it, so disappointment reigned.

That is true, it's a long drive--but I am seriously considering Dallas to Houston for Nicole Mitchell, perhaps followed by Houston to San Antonio for Randy Weston, on the Memorial Day weekend. It is tempting at least, as these opportunities don't come by too often.

The recently released double CD anthology on Strut, Spirit of Malombo, featuring various groups led by drummer Julian Bahula from 1966-1984 (except the final track from 2007, perhaps the most amazing track on the whole set), is quite excellent. Now Orleans-ish to Austin via Houston is not a killer drive, at least not if you got Road Dog chops, which of course not everybody does, just some freaks do. But if you're one of those freaks,, hey. And you can fly on Southwest Airlines between New Orleans/Austin in 80-90 minutes.

Hi Ruth! is from The Black Cat (Prestige 10006), a fantastic record, available on CD as Gene Ammons/Legends of Acid Jazz.

I heard him live a few times--most memorably paired with Woody Shaw; also in a larger group led by Dizzy Gillespie. On CD, I have Spirits Up Above and Delightful and Delicious, both good recordings.

I believe the label is still around; they had the CDs for sale at the club gift shop, last time I was there. In fact, you can order them from the club's website: http://www.bluenote.net/giftshop/list.cgi?25 I don't see the CD you are looking for on the list, though.
