That album w/Golson is on my short list of albums to own. It's the only RRK album I don't have on vinyl (or cd for that matter). Is that the same cover as the U.S. issued lp? I've never seen it so I have no idea. I like it though. The Haynes album I'm well acquainted with though I don't have it on vinyl either. The photo of the Kirk-Golson LP is the version that I have on LP. I think it is the original U.S. issue.

Concord Music Group Sold
kh1958 replied to Mark Stryker's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
"The principal purpose for the buyout is to ensure the reissuance of Freddie McCoy's Prestige recordings." It should be so anyway. The bit I thought was interesting was: The acquisition is being made on behalf of funds managed by Wood Creek and an individual investors group that includes members of Concord's senior management and music industry veterans Steve Smith, a principal in Bicycle Music, and Scott Pascucci, a former head of Rhino Entertainment. So this is, in part, a management buyout, plus a couple of old heavies, one of whom was in the reissue business, plus the usual suits. Well, we'll see. MG -

I saw him live with Paul Motian at the Village Vanguard; it was very peculiar, he was growling like he was a dog. Looking around me, even more oddly, the audience was reacting like this was normal; are they gaslighting me? I couldn't take it and had to leave after one set. Have you guys heard Masabumi Kikuchi? I am thinking particularly of Paul Motian on Broadway Vol. 4. Great piano player but his vocalizations sound like Peter Lorre being strangled.

My favorite recording by Mark Whitfield currently is Trio Paradise. It's a straight ahead recording of his trio. It's a Japanese release, though copies are available (expensive though) on amazon.com.

I recently came across an LP called One Night Stand with Raymond Scott 1940. It's a radio broadcast, released on the Joyce Music Corp. label. Performed by a thirteen piece band, and they play a number of songs recorded by the small group (like Powerhouse and the Toy Trumpet). It's a pretty fun record.

He recently (within the last few weeks) played at Smalls as a leader; the live broadcast was rather good; you might see if the sets have made it to their online archive yet.

I've seen Mark Shim live a couple of times in the last few years. He's very good. He was with Onaje Alan Gumbs and the other time with Carlo DeRosa.

I caught most of the second set by the Ari Hoenig group. Very enjoyable. With Tivon Pennicott on tenor sax, Gilad Hekselman on guitar, and Johannes Weidenmuller on bass. On Wednesday, I hope to hear the Noah Preminger Quartet, and on Friday-Saturday, the Ralph Peterson Fo'Tet.

Dallas, Austin, Houston, San Antonio, Etc. Jazz & Other Concerts

The Evan Weiss / Davy Mooney group was rather good, it turns out, even though Scat Jazz is a poor venue. I could hardly hear the band during the first set, the crowd was so loud. Many of the noisy people left after the first set, so I was able to move closer to hear better; the band seemed to gell during the second set. This fellow Evan Weiss seems to be a pretty strong composer. At any rate, there are more dates in the next few days in the area for this temporary assemblage. Tonight (Sunday), at 7 at Sweetwater in Denton. Monday, at 10 at Amsterdam Bar in Dallas. Tuesday, at 8 at Dan's Silverleaf in Denton. -

Saturday, March 16: Evan Weiss Quartet with Davy Mooney, Scat Jazz, Fort Worth. Trumpeter Evan Weiss has a nice debut recording out on Greg Osby's Inner Circle Records, Math or Magic. Currently listening to guitarist Davy Mooney from the Smalls archive. -
I would like to attend the Friday concert, but don't know if I will be able to escape from work that day.

This excellent set sent me immediately to CDbaby to order Simona Premazzi's two CDs. I didn't catch the name of the soprano saxophonist who sat in for two pieces, but she played beautifully.

The Simona Premazzi Quartet with Melissa Aldana has just started the late night set.
