  1. Joe Henderson, Inner Urge (Blue Note blue label, Van Gelder), and Bob Thiele and His New Happy Times Orchestra with Gabor Szabo, LIght My Fire (Impulse, white and black promo label). This had the appearance of a comical period piece turkey (confirmed on the second track of side 1 as an uncredited chorus of female vocalists sings, "Let's All Get Stoned" during a version of Dylan's Rainy Day Woman). But on the last song of the first side, Light My Fire of all things, Gabor Szabo unleashes a furious solo, followed by some rather fine Tom Scott, and this high level of solo play by Szabo and Scott more or less continues for the rest of the album.
  2. Still no reply from Mr. Jackson and/or his minions.
  3. Final bid was $202.50!
  4. Miles Davis, Steamin' (Prestige, New Jersey)--A battered but still beautiful sounding copy.
  5. Those Bob Mosely sides are available on CD on an IAJRC release, Lucky Thompson, The Beginning Years.
  6. All of the Last Exit CDs on his website have been available as commercial CDs.
  7. I just found my copy of the Billy Mitchell, so this was my first listen; I rather enjoyed it (in addition to Thad Jones, it features Kenny Burrell and Richard Wyands). This morning, Raymond Scott and His Orchestra Plays (MGM ten inch), and Gems of Jazz Volume 4 (Coleman Hawkins, Red Allen, Benny Carter) (Decca ten inch).
  8. I don't give up easily; I'll be sending another email in the next day or so.
  9. So far, no reply at all to my request to order.
  10. This seems really odd, a $100 bid for a later Archie Shepp Impulse LP--Attica Blues, and with seven days to go. http://www.ebay.com/itm/ARCHIE-SHEPP-w-MARION-BROWN-ATTICA-BLUES-STILL-SEALED-ORIGINAL-1972-IMPULSE-LP-/350808515921?pt=Music_on_Vinyl&hash=item51add12551
  11. This record, Smash issue, promo mono.
  12. I enjoyed the concert--the tenor player is quite skilled, one of those inside/outside players. Hopefully there will be another opportunity soon, and I'll try to be there.
  13. Contribution made via paypal.
  14. I almost ordered the Power Tools with Pete Cosey, but I thought, we'll see how this goes.
  15. A CD (CDr?) of a portion of this concert is now available from Ronald Shannon Jackson's website, complete with some mighty confusing ordering and pricing rules. I've attempted to order this along with a 1994 Decoding Society concert recording; we'll see how this goes. http://ronaldshannonjackson.com/cds.html
  16. From an Arhoolie overstock sale (3 or more for $7 each): Lightnin' Hopkins, The Goldstar Sessions, Volume 1, Louisiana Blues 1970, and Papa Celetin's Tuxedo Jazz Band--1950s Radio Broadcasts. http://www.arhoolie.com/overstock-sale-items/
  17. Milt Jackson, Statements IImpulse, red and black), and George Braith, Extension (Blue Note, NY USA).
  18. Charlie Parker Memorial, volume 1 (Savoy), followed by Horace Silver, Horace-Scope (Blue Note stereo, W. 63rd).
  19. I was just going to listen for a moment tonight, but (Argentinian pianist) Emilio Sola and Bien Sur would not let me turn them off...
  20. I enjoyed it and would recommend it as a worthy recording.
  21. It didn't take long to realize I really like Tammy Scheffer's singing and her band.
  22. I caught the last set by the Steve Davis Sextet Saturday night , and a fine set it was in the Jazz Messenger vein. Larry Willis was a semi-regular house pianist at the Caravan of Dreams in the mid-1980s, and he's still sounding as good as ever. Next week, I'm looking forward to the Brooklyn Underground festival for two nights.
  23. Shinichi Yuize, The Artistry of Japan (Prestige, blue label) Ben Webster, See You at the Fair (Impulse, red and black label)
  24. There's now another one (or is it a branch?) in Roxbury, NY: http://popcultureblog.dallasnews.com/2012/08/dallas-no-longer-the-only-city-with-an-eight-track-museum-as-ny-outpost-debuts-in-october-with-worlds-rarest-tape.html/ Not too far from me, but I haven't yet visited. Don Quixote lives.
