  1. It was either 1927 or when the Beatles broke up.
  2. Have you heard Rob Garcia's The Drop and Ocean and Perennial? Both are pretty nice and feature Dan Tepfer (and Noah Preminger). I heard the group at the Cornelia Street Cafe.
  3. He's fun, and such a melodic drummer.
  4. Kenny Burrell, Ode to 52nd Street (Cadet), and Clef: Our Best (Clef).
  5. Kenny Drew Trio (Riverside mono) Cal Tjader Plugs In, Live at the Lighthouse (Skye)
  6. Happy to be listening to this.
  7. Clark Terry, Johnny Griffin, Ernie Henry, Wynton Kelly, Wilbur Ware, Kenny Drew, Philly Joe Jones, Paul Chambers/Cruisin' the Rhythm Sections (Jazzland)
  8. Janiva Magness in Texas: June 18-19 in San Angelo at Sealy Flats. June 20 in Austin at Antone's. June 21, back in San Angelo. June 22, in Dallas at Poor David's Pub.

Yes, the Wild Bill Moore Orchestra is included.
  12. This past week, I heard and enjoyed, Ari Hoenig's group with Tivon Pennicott, George Burton (only the last three songs of the appearance, I wish I had caught more), the Flail, and Stacy Dillard's Brooklyn Circle. This coming week, I'm looking forward to, on Monday: Ari Hoenig (unusual drums with two tenors group), Friday and Saturday: Jimmy Greene Quartet, Friday, Tyler Mitchell after-hours, and after hours on Saturday, Stacy Dillard Brooklyn Circle.
  13. Antonio Bribiesca, Guitarra Sentimental (Peerless)
  14. Lou Donaldson, Mr. Shing A Ling (Blue Note, dark blue label)
  15. Just released, Charnette Moffett, The Bridge (Motema).
  16. Clare Fischer, So Danco Samba (World Pacific stereo)
  17. Tonight, Pandit Nayan Ghosh (sitar), Praveen Sheolikar (violin) and Ishaan Ghosh (tabla), at the Allen Pubic Library Auditorium. This was a fabulous concert. Thanks to the Indian Classical Music Circle of DFW.
  18. The Symphonic Ellington (Reprise promo), and The Genius of Sonny Stitt Gets Close to You (Jazz Masters)
  19. He's a favorite of mine, but I never got to hear him live. Favored recordings are these five: Blisterstring; Fast Fingers; Me, My Gitar and the Blues; Tribute to Orange; and West Side Guitar Hero. For awhile, he had Otis Rush on second guitar.
  20. When they say Texas is BIG, they are not kidding..
  21. West is home to a favorite gas station on the Dallas to Austin drive. http://www.czechstop.net
  22. That's no big loss.
  23. The Legendary Buster Smith (Atlantic black label), and The Consummate Artistry of Ben Webster (Norgran). With a price tag from the University of Texas Coop, dated June of 1954, $4.95. The sound of this LP is so real and lifelike. A fantastic record. The Verve LPs that sound great in my experience are the trumpet label pressings, and the Verve T deep groove pressings. The ordinary non-deep groove Verve T pressings from the '60s and '70s (and I generally can't tell the difference) are okay, but nothing special in terms of sound.
  24. After the set, I ordered Music for Organ Sextette on Steeplechase. This morning, I've been listening for the first time to Tyler Mitchell, Live at Smalls (Abraham Burton, Josh Evans, Spike Wilner, Eric McPherson). This might be the finest release so far in the CD series. Definitely the best Abraham Burton I've heard on record.
