  1. Nice group tonight, playing McCoy Tyner compositions: The Gerry Gibbs Sextet 10:00 PM to 12:30 AM Mark Feldman - Violin Steve Wilson - Alto Sax Robin Eubanks - Trombone Benito Gonzalez - Piano Essiet Essiet - Bass Gerry Gibbs - Drums
  2. Tyree Glenn at the Embers (Roulette)
  3. I don't think I've ever noticed High Note/Savants on cdbaby. I usually order their CDs from jazzdepot.com. The CDbaby search engine is absolutely terrible. If you are searching for a specific artist or label, there are always lots and lots of irrelevent hits, and the ones you are actually looking for are buried among the unwanted ones. On first listen, the Shelley Carroll/Marchel Ivery tracks are all excellent. There are also three tracks with a vocalist who's not really my preferred style, but otherwise, it sounded rather good to me.
  4. A new CD from Shelley Carroll, I Heard That, features Marchel Ivery on 8 of the 11 tracks. http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/shelleycarrol4
  5. Very nice group; I hadn't heard Juini Booth since McCoy Tyner's Song of the New World/Atlantis/Enlightenment. Also, Eric McPherson on drums.
  6. Missed that but I'm going to to listen to some of the Jason Lindner trio, since Juini Booth is on bass.
  7. At present, the video is still not real sharp; the sound is quite excellent now. You can turn it up loud and it's pretty much you are there sound quality.
  8. Live video of all sets from the club is still currently $5 a month. Occasional nights are free.
  9. Great Big Band and Friends, Harry Arnold Orchestra with Coleman Hawkins, Lucky Thompson, Benny Bailey, Nat Adderley and Toots Thieleman (Jazzland, black label stereo), and Marion Brown, Geechee Reollections (Impulse, black label)
  10. I'm really enjoying the Stacey Dillard set tonight, also including Tivon Penicott.
  11. Gary McFarland & Co.--Tijuana Jazz (Impulse)
  12. This is the only group I've had time to catch this week; it was indeed a fine one.
  13. Personally, I like Terrance Blanchard the best of the lot mentioned above, Roy Hargrove second best, but in Hargrove's case the live performances I've heard are better than his recordings (Earfood and Nothing Serious are his best). Josh Evans is a promising youngster (he's on the Tyler Michell and Dezron Douglas Live at Smalls releases--both recordings are quite good). Also, Ambrose Akinmusire.
  14. Yes, you are right, the Maynard Parker album is named for the Greg Allman song, Midnight Rider.
  15. This weekend, Shirley Scott, Happy Talk (Prestige), Maynard Parker, Midnight Rider (Prestige), and Lambert, Hendricks, & Bavan, Havin' A Ball at the Village Gate (RCA) (backed by Gildo Mahones trio with guests Booker Ervin and Thad Jones).
  16. He could move down here to Dallas, have almost no where to play at all, and be trouble free. Meanwhile, another excellent Ari Hoenig group is performing.
  17. New York Times article on Smalls/webcasts/fundraising campaign. http://www.nytimes.com/2013/07/13/arts/music/smalls-and-other-clubs-are-webcasting-concerts.html?pagewanted=all
  18. Gee, you're even grumpier than me! Last month I was at an Enrico Rava concert and during the entire performance the asshole next to me kept holding up his cell phone right in front of my face in order to take meaningless pictures that nobody in the history of the world would ever care to see. If somebody had put a bullet in his head right then with a silencer I would have felt only a little bit bad but mostly would have felt that it was necessary for the good of society. You must be really pleasant to sit next to. Actually I am. I don't say a word at the time, I just come on internet forums months later and share my violent fantasies. That seems pretty pleasant, if you ask me. I must confess to having flayed, drawn and quartered many tables of non-attentive loud talkers over the years, but it was only in my mind (I think). The screams would be too loud. That's why you've got to take them out with a silencer. Quick shot to the head, and then a waiter can come along and quietly clean up and also maybe refill your drink at the same time. True, while the punishment may not quite fit the crime, it's an acceptable compromise.

  21. Doug Carn, Spirit of the New Land (Black Jazz), Boogaloo Joe Jones, What It Is (Prestige/Fantasy, green label RVG), and Rusty Bryant, Friday Night Funk for Saturday Night Brothers (Prestige/Fantasy, green label RVG).
  22. Richard Groove Holmes, Soul Message (Prestige, blue label)
  23. Listening, and they do sound good.
  24. It was worth the original sale price, but not a premium over that.
