  1. The Moffett Family Jazz Band. Father and four sons.
  2. Stan Getz Plays (Verve)
  3. Albert Dailey--The Day After the Dawn (Columbia) Mary Lou Williams (Contemporary ten inch)
  4. There are generally rather slim jazz pickings in Dallas-Fort Worth. On July 7, Ronald Shannon Jackson will make a rare appearance at the Kessler Theater in Oak Cliff. The Rebirth Jazz Band is playing at the Kessler on May 11. On May 20 and June 17, board members Jim Sangrey and Greg Waits appear at the Free Man in Deep Ellum. For CDs, CD Source on Greenville Avenue has a fairly large jazz stock (used). The flagship Half Price Books outlet on Northwest Highway is also worth checking out for used jazz CDs and LPs.
  5. I am a big fan and was lucky enough to see him live on numerous occasions. He was always good, without fail. As for recommendations, there's a CD compilation of his two Muse albums, Lone Star Legend. A little less straightahead, but his playing on the Atlantic release Newmanism is some of his most intense on record. There's a nice date where he's paired with Clifford Jordan called Bluehead. One of his appearances at the Caravan of Dreams was released on a record called Texas Jazz Reunion (with James Clay, Hog Cooper and Cornell Dupree). Any and all of the High Note releases are worthwhile. In my favorite live experience with David Newman, he was partnered with organist Leon Spencer at the Caravan of Dreams. The sets were electrifying, but apparently not recorded. In his last appearance at the Caravan, he led a band with the very young Roy Hargrove, Larry Willis, Walter Booker and Idris Muhammad--they were recording but it was never released.
  6. Me too (ordered that is). Amazon lists it as not available until June 12.

  9. Are these the 1923-26 solo recordings? 1923 and 1924 solo piano recordings, on Gennett and Paramount.
  10. The early Jelly Roll Morton solo recordings could use a sonic upgrade.
  11. A couple of weeks ago, I was driving back to work from lunch, and there was George Hamilton crossing the street. He was very tan, except in comparison to this woman.
  12. A new Henry Threadgill CD on Pi arrives in June. http://www.pirecordings.com/album/pi43
  13. Here's some online information: http://www.bsnpubs.com/chess/argo600.html

  16. The Rockin' Tenor Sax of Eddie Chamblee (Prestige, blue label) The Three Sounds, Feelin' Good (Blue Note, NY USA)
  17. The Prestige reissues of MPS LPs sound quite nice and can usually be had for $10 or so on ebay.
  18. Sonny Rollins and the Contemporary Leaders (Contemporary, English Vogue) Barney Kessel, To Swing or Not to Swing (Contemporary)
  19. What performance are you referring to? Big Al is referring to posts 358 and 360.
  20. I can't make it Sunday, but I do eat lunch sometimes at Free Man; the food is excellent.
  21. My copy is similar but not identical. There is no ear, and no deep groove on mine. Also no reference to Esperanto.
  22. Horace Silver, Song for my Father (Blue Note, NY USA) Milt Jackson, Jazz 'N Samba (Impulse, orange and black)
  23. I saw Jimmy Smith on August 1, 1987, at the Caravan of Dreams in Fort Worth. It was a trio, with guitar and drums. Definitely not Kenny Burrell. I have a tape of a radio broadcast from the night before of part of a set; I'll dig it out and see if the announcer identifies the guitarist.
  24. I too dilly dallied and did not buy a ticket. Oh well.
  25. Sheila Jordan, Portrait of Sheila (Blue Note, NY USA)
