  1. Albert Ayler, Music is the Healing Force of the Universe (Impulse, red and black label)
  2. According to Dante, vinyl thieves are immersed in a lake of molten vinyl for all eternity.
  3. The old price/demand ratio. I might go if it were in the $5-10 range. The last time I saw Wynton, quite a few years back at McFarlin Auditorium, was mighty boring, I do recall.
  4. I missed one, if there are any fans in the house: Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis Capital One Bank Bravo Series AT&T Performing Arts Center Presents Tuesday, February 5, 2013 8:00PM Winspear Opera House
  5. After a search, I can't find any touring jazz events on the horizon, except for Houston Person at UTD, February 8, 2013. http://www.utdallas.edu/ah/events/detail.html?id=1220269351 There are a a couple of blues events in the area: Lucky Peterson at the Granada Theater on January 11. B.B. King at House of Blues on January 12.
  6. Chico Hamilton, Complete Pacific Jazz, disc 1
  7. Art Farmer, The Aztec Suite (United Artists mono) Zen: The Music of Fred Katz (Pacific Jazz mono)
  8. I stumbled across some more Jay Peters on Lionel Hampton's Columbia Album from 1954, Wailin' at the Trianon. The album does not list the full band personnel, but Lionel Hampton's notes specifically mention Jay Peters as the featured tenor soloist, and he takes several excellent solos on the album.
  9. Lionel Hampton, Wailin' at the Trianon (Columbia six eyes)
  10. He probably figured he could sell it.
  11. McCoy Tyner, Inception (Impulse, red and black stereo) Shirley Scott, Everybody Loves a Lover (Impulse, orange and black stereo)
  12. A slow year for concerts, but I managed to hear a few good ones... Rez Abassi Trio--Cornelia Street Cafe Edmar Castaneda--Jazz Standard Chico Hamilton--Drom Magos Herrera--Terraza 7 Ronald Shannon Jackson and the Decoding Society--Kessler Theater Lucky Peterson--Tuckers Blues (closed September 15) Mike Stern--55 Bar
  13. In general, I've never been too thrilled with vintage Atlantic pressings. Unlike contemporaneous records by Contemporary, Blue Note, Prestige, RCA, and Columbia, which usually sound wonderful, Altantics just don't sound that great to me; and the quality of the pressing doesn't otherwise seem that high. I can't say that I have heard early Coltrane LPs, but I wouldn't pay such a price for an Atlantic LP.
  14. Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane at Carnegie Hall (Mosaic) Mal Waldron, Love Sweet Bitter (Impulse, orange and black mono)
  15. More Sun Ra from Art Yard: http://www.dustygroove.com/item.php?id=vx84tq7m8t&ref=index.php Cosmo Earth Fantasy – Sub Underground Series Vols 1 & 2
  16. Gildo Mahones, TheSoulful Piano (Prestige blue label)
  17. Charlie Byrd Trio, Travelin' Light, Live at the Showplace (Columbia, 2 eyes)
  18. Lobi Traore, In the Club, volume 1, Raw Electric Blues from Bamako (Kanaga System Krush)
  19. I never understood why anyone would buy from them; their prices were high, and they didn't really have hard to find items.
  20. Every time I get a new (Windows) computer at work, I have to figure out how to reverse the mouse buttons again.

    Ed Blackwell

My favorite Ed Blackwell recordings are This is Our Music and Ornette!
  22. Is it the Bobby Jones, Charles McPherson, Eddie Preston, Jaki Byard, Dannie Richmond band? What label? What songs do they perform?
  23. I think Mingus would have punched Erik Alexander in the face.
  24. The next member of the Allen Lowe group? "Letizia is an ... old soul..." Lenny White. http://www.letiziagambi.com
