kh, This one is a sentimental favorite of mine that I got when it was new when I was in college. A few years back Pat Martino was a regular at AAJ, and I asked him if it was available on CD. He said that it was, by ordering from Eric. Perhaps you can do a search at AAJ and find the thread with the URL where to order it. I found the Pat Martino thread at all about jazz and followed his instructions but they don't work any more.

There are generally rather slim jazz pickings in Dallas-Fort Worth. On July 7, Ronald Shannon Jackson will make a rare appearance at the Kessler Theater in Oak Cliff. The Rebirth Jazz Band is playing at the Kessler on May 11. On May 20 and June 17, board members Jim Sangrey and Greg Waits appear at the Free Man in Deep Ellum. For CDs, CD Source on Greenville Avenue has a fairly large jazz stock (used). The flagship Half Price Books outlet on Northwest Highway is also worth checking out for used jazz CDs and LPs.

I am a big fan and was lucky enough to see him live on numerous occasions. He was always good, without fail. As for recommendations, there's a CD compilation of his two Muse albums, Lone Star Legend. A little less straightahead, but his playing on the Atlantic release Newmanism is some of his most intense on record. There's a nice date where he's paired with Clifford Jordan called Bluehead. One of his appearances at the Caravan of Dreams was released on a record called Texas Jazz Reunion (with James Clay, Hog Cooper and Cornell Dupree). Any and all of the High Note releases are worthwhile. In my favorite live experience with David Newman, he was partnered with organist Leon Spencer at the Caravan of Dreams. The sets were electrifying, but apparently not recorded. In his last appearance at the Caravan, he led a band with the very young Roy Hargrove, Larry Willis, Walter Booker and Idris Muhammad--they were recording but it was never released.

Me too (ordered that is). Amazon lists it as not available until June 12.
