  1. Happy Birthday!
  2. Paolo Vinaccia with Terje Rypdal--Very Much Alive Eithiopiques volumes 8 and 13 Joyce--Rio De Janeiro Elis Regina==Um Dia (Montreux Jazz Festival 1979)
  3. Shouldn't those covers say, "Not Digitally Remastered...", or "Digitally Remastered by someone we did not hire or pay..."?
  4. Duke Ellington--Latin American Suite (Fantasy promo)
  5. Duke Ellington --Eastbourne Performance (RCA)
  6. They actually were touring last fall, and I (and my son) got to them in Chicago. Very nice concert in a terrific location (South Shore Cultural Center). Thank you for this recommendation.
  7. April 13-14: Mike Stern Trio at Dan's Silverleaf, Denton.
  8. I recently acquired this set on CD (I've had the LPs since the '70s). I've only listened on computer speakers, but it sounds good, not a needle drop. I really enjoyed listening to the jam sessions again, actually. It's 3 discs in a single digipack, available pretty cheap from amazon sellers (about $23).
  9. Gene Ammons--Twistin' the Jug (Prestige Black and silver N.J. stereo). This looked a bit battered but was only $9 and cleaned up nicely, the result being amazingly vivid sound.
  10. In 1993, I saw the Thomas Chapin trio (Michael Sarin and Mario Pavone) at the Pitt Gallery in Vancouver. That was just an incredible performance, one of the most exciting I've ever heard. Then in late 1994, I saw him with a different group, Two Bass Hit, at the Alterknit Theater in the Knitting Factory. This group had Reggie Nicholson, Pavone and another bassist. And I got to see the trio one final time in the main space at the Knitting Factory, before a packed, standing crowd, April 5, 1997. Chapin was ill at this point, but still managed to reach some astounding peaks during the concert.
  11. Archie Shepp--Four For Trane (Impulse, red and black)
  12. Yesterday, I finally received an email notifying me of shipment of my order placed two weeks or so ago.
  13. A US label very active in the 70s. Certainly 'legit' - they did quite a few domestic issues of the East Wind material. I've got a couple of Art Farmers on this imprint (and the sonics are suprisingly good..) Inner City also released Steeplechase titles in the U.S.
  14. Robert Glasper Experiment--March 2 at Kessler Theater.
  15. Milt Jackson--Born Free (Limelight) Shelly Manne--Swinging Sounds, vol. 4 (Contemporary)
  16. Yes, please send the Blue Note (the worst major New York jazz club) to Dallas.
  17. The Goldmine Guide says that trident on the right is 1964-67, trident on the top is 1967-69, and purple label is 1969-72.
  18. I think the purple label was used at the very end, just before the sale to Fantasy.
  19. I've come to like Smalls a lot in recent years. It is in fact much more friendly and welcoming than the Village Vanguard. The sound is good, if not as good as at the Vanguard. It's certainly a lot better deal--if you want to hear two or three groups.
  20. That's been a symptom of a lot of NJ LPs that I've had. Some worse than others. New Jazz was a budget label for Prestige (the price was $1 or $2 less than regular Prestige). I have not found this problem to be common with main label Prestiges.
  21. two interesting quotes about that record: "Damn, that's a real bebop rhythm section" - Roscoe Mitchell "Oh yeah, you got the real tapes" - Eli Thompson Any chance of a CD reissue?
  22. Gabor Szabo--Gypsy '66 (Impulse, orange and black)
  23. Sonny Rollins--Brass/Trio (Verve)
  24. John Handy--Live at the Monterey Jazz Festival (Columbia, two eyes)
  25. Clare Fischer Orchestra--Extension (Pacific Jazz)
