  1. As for your cassette adapter, buy one of the Monster brand. The two I've had do not make any annoying clicking sounds. In contrast, the Sony cassette adapter was horrible, making loud clicking sounds that got worse the longer it was used. I believe that you can plug your ipod into the new BMWs--of course, that is a rather expensive ipod player.
  2. I don't agree. For the most part, I prefer the unedited tracks on Mingus Ah Um and Mingus Dynasty myself. I suspect that Mingus was pressured to edit solos to get as many of his compositions as possible on his Columbia releases. The additions to Booker Ervin's solos are especially welcome. Either way, they are both great albums.
  3. Just don't make a wrong turn (The neighborhood around Fair Park is pretty dire). Dallas' main cultural outlet for the out-of-town visitor are the numerous men's clubs on I-35. If you can find a copy of the Dallas Observer when you're here, it has a fairly complete listing of concert and club appearances. There's always the chance that Marchel Ivery might be playing somewhere, for example.
  4. Unfortunately, no.
  5. Also, his "Debut in Blues." Carnival Sketches was briefly available as a Japanese CD reissue.
  6. The version of Tenderly on this CD is really good. I would never have thought there was any life left in this standard, but I was sure proven wrong. A straight to ipod transfer.

    Chico Hamilton

His best work is in the last fifteen years or so--the groups with Cary Denegris on guitar and Eric Person on saxophone--this is a great and underappreciated group. For example, Trio, Arroyo and Euphoria are three favorites with this group. I saw this group at the Knitting Factory five or six years ago before a very sparse crowd and they were superb.
  8. Yes, the Monk Blue Note LP set was the first Mosaic set. I'm not sure why they chose to start with 101 rather than 1.
  9. The reference is to this concert DVD, I believe: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00...9058995-5895927
  10. I placed an order for a few OJCs with J&R on Saturday. I've already received an email that the order has shipped (all of the ones I ordered).
  11. Yes, they are both Slytherins. You're just upset about your cellphone. --eric ← Soulstation1 lost his cell phone. ← Any relation? --eric ←
  12. I finished the book on Saturday, and the series continues in excellent form. While the hype is out of hand, this is one of those very rare instances when it is deserved. I suspect it's going to be a very long wait for book 7.
  13. Thanks. They had what I was looking for in stock, it appears.
  14. Is there a current U.S. source for the Black Saint and Soul Note catalogue?
  15. You have won Stump The Organissimoites. Everyone should send you a free CD, I would think.

    Cal Massey

Zane Massey also recorded with Ronald Shannon Jackson and the Decoding Society.
  17. It must be an in-store sale only then--I just bought Stan Getz--the Steamer, Basie at Newport, Kenny Burrell and Jimmy Smith--Blue Bash, and Wes Montgomery--Tequila, all for $9.99, and they had lots of other titles. I googled Tower and punched in "Verve Master Editions" which showed an average price of $13.99 ←
  18. Another sale--Tower has Verve Master Editions on sale for $9.99.

    Cal Massey

There are two Cal Massey compositions on a 1962 Freddie Hubbard Blue Note date, released for the first time as part of a twofer LP, Here to Stay. I'm not sure if this has been on CD, but it was a rather good date, as I recall (with Wayne Shorter, Cedar Walton, Reggie Workman and Philly Joe Jones), especially the two Massey compositions.
  20. Come with Me--that was the other one of Concord that I liked.
  21. You might try some of her early Concord albums--one I like is The Real Tania Maria--Wild. I saw her at the Caravan of Dreams years ago, and enjoyed the concert, both her piano (accoustic) and accompanying vocals. I had the chance to see her at S.O.Bs in New York, six or seven years ago, and it was a different story--a very overamplified presentation that was not at all enjoyable. Since that bad experience, I haven't really listened to her.
  22. The catalogue is interesting looking but consists of mostly unfamiliar artists (to me). What are some of the best discs?
  23. I don't have the CD of this one, just my LP, but it's on my wantlist. The first time I was able to see Freddie was after this came out, and he kept us waiting (for both sets) but the second set he played a great version of Shades of Trane from this LP (George Cables on electric piano, but alas no Junior Cook). ← Agreed, but this is a costly cd. I paid over $20 for mine. Available only in Japanese editions, i believe. ←
  24. McCoy Tyner--Song of the New World.
  25. Keep Your Soul Together (Freddie with Junior Cook, George Cables, Ron Carter) is another one on CTI to keep an eye out for.
