Last night at Windmills in The Colony, Jackie Venson. A somewhat annoying venue with good sound. Great guitar playing abounded.

That's the way I organize Prestige LPs--by catalog number, but subdivided between the main label and the sublabels (New Jazz, Moodsville, Swingville, Bluesville, International, Tru Sound).

I've seen him twice and quite liked his playing. He seemed very nice also when I picked up a couple of his CDs.

A great thing about a festival like Big Ears is not just reinforcing your existing tastes but introducing new musicians, and in the case of the second wave, Yasmin Williams, while not jazz, is fantastic.

Except for the final segment, Coltrane is simply not audible enough for me. Disappointed in the recording in that respect.

What year is this recording? I heard him at the Village Vanguard in 2017; hard to believe it was four years ago. Two really strong sets.

Smith won the National Book Award in 2010 for her memoir, Just Kids, which chronicles her friendship and artistic journey with photographer Robert Mapplethorpe. Mind-blowing fingerstyle guitarist Yasmin Williams brings her abiding sense of invention to a solo set. Celtic harpist Maeve Gilchrist is entirely redefining the use of her instrument; she plays a solo set highlighting material from her acclaimed recent release, The Harpweaver. GEORGE—a new collaboration between percussionist John Hollenbeck, saxophonists Aurora Nealand and Anna Webber, and microtonal musician Chiquita Magic—makes its debut live performance. Cornetist Ben LaMar Gay leads a quartet playing music from his highly anticipated new album, Open Arms to Open Us, which is being co-released by Nonesuch Records and International Anthem. Celebrated clarinetist Evan Ziporyn plays a solo program of his own compositions, as well as the world premiere of a newly discovered late-1960s piece by Philip Glass. I agree that Faddis quickly wore thin on the Carnegie Hall expanded reissue. Hopefully he will be better here. Whether he is or not is not going to quell my interest. It's a little documented different Mingus group (Foster on piano and Roy Brooks instead of Dannie). Plus at least one otherwise unrecorded composition (Mindreaders Convention in Milano, and I do recall reading a review of the engagement that raved about this composition). Faddis is better than the guy on Mingus Moves but I still love that record.
