Dallas, Austin, Houston, San Antonio, Etc. Jazz & Other Concerts
kh1958 replied to kh1958's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Nameless Sound states in an email: Nameless Sound’s concert series and community programming overlap in that many of the artists presented on stage also facilitate guest artist workshops. In 2022 we plan to host residencies by jazz legends Andrew Cyrille and Billy Harper, French percussionist Le Quan Ninh, and creative music icon Joe McPhee. -

About this event Charles Mingus (1922-1979), bassist and composer, was not only one of the greatest jazz musicians and jazz ensemble leaders of all time, but also one of the most important American musicians of the 20th century. We now celebrate his Centennial with an eclectic two-hour virtual event, combining readings, commentary, reminiscences, and performance. Our participants will include Eric Mingus, acclaimed musician, recording artist, and son of Charles Mingus; Kei Akagi, Chancellor’s Professor of Music and Director of Jazz Studies, UCI, and former member of the Miles Davis band; Geoff Dyer, widely recognized as one of the most important writers of his generation and author of “But Beautiful (A Book About Jazz)”, which “may be the best book ever written about jazz” (LA Times); Charles McPherson, legendary alto saxophonist who played with Charles Mingus as a member of his ensemble for more than a decade; Teodross “Teo” Avery, acclaimed tenor saxophonist and Director of the Jazz Program at California State University, Dominguez Hills; and Morris Eagle, internationally renowned psychoanalyst and author who was manager of Charles Mingus during the 1950’s and maintained a friendship with Mingus over the course of decades. Our event will also include Special Guest Jack Walrath, legendary trumpeter with a lengthy history of performing and recording with Charles Mingus. Douglas Haynes, UCI Vice Chancellor for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, will provide welcoming remarks. Event organizer Mark Fisher, UCI Professor of Neurology, will host. I justified the price to myself by using Amex points. It is an impeccable pressing with very fine sound.

Dick Johnson and Dave McKenna, Spider's Blues (Concord) Sonny Stitt, Come Hither (Solid State) Ken Wheeler.John Dankforth Orchestra, Windmill Tilting (Fontana) I was not familiar with Dick Johnson, a swing band veteran. He is excellent. I enjoy Sonny Stitt on varitone, but with a couple of tracks that are exceptions this is not one of the good ones. Windmill Tilting, ordered on Amazon, just arrived from Spain.

I didn't realize when I ordered that it was solo bass, but I do like it. The sound of the bass amp is not optimal, but most of his compositions are fairly compelling.

I have one other of the Jazzbuhne series-volume 12 led by James Blood Ulmer and features George Adams. A bootleg it may be but It is the best recording of these two together.
-
Erskine Hawkins, 1939-1940 (Classics)
-
I have all on this list except Live in Tokyo. I don't know if Jazzbuhne Berlin '88, Vol. 17 is technically a bootleg or not. It is a well recorded concert. Better recorded than the Palcoscenico LPs, as I recall. There is also a duo release on Timeless. I don't know of any others except the Horo releases.
