  1. Well, someone needs to teach him how to hold it correctly.
  2. Anyone been watching this documentary about crab-fishermen? The Discovery channel has been running it a lot lately. I think it's really fascinating stuff. These are some seriously bad-ass dudes. I'm also amazed that there are any crabs left in the sea with the huge amounts these boats can take. Very interesting series. Anyone here know anyone who does this sort of thing?
  3. Come on down! After all my years in the midwest I'm looking forward to having access to FRESH fish & seafood. Jim can visit as long as he leaves the 'bone at home.
  4. Update....... I went to Tallahassee a couple weeks ago to teach at the FSU jazz camp (no actual camping involved). I went down a few days early to look for a place to live- I rented a very nice townhouse (garage, deck (for the grill ), lots of space (closets! pantry!), W/D (which is great because I've been doing the laundromat scene for the past year and I'm ready to be done w/THAT), and a great location. The weather was hot and humid as predicted but not all that different from my days of living in Austin. I like the fact that I'm 90 minutes away from nice white-sand beaches. Hurricane season, well, we'll see what THAT'S all about soon enough. I also had the opportunity to hang & play with the rest of the faculty and was very impressed. They get out to play locally and in the area frequently, something that never happened with the faculty at my old school. Tallahassee is a nice city, not a big music scene but there are several places to play. So all in all I'm looking forward to the new job and change of scenery- I'm going to miss many of my KC friends, but this change is just what I need. So now I've got the next two weeks to pack and get ready for the movers on July 16th.
  5. OK Jim, what's up with the new avatar?
  6. Katz's Reuben.......mmmmmmmmmmmm! I sure loved those! Glad to hear Helen is up and about, Lon!
  7. Did "Live from the Showboat" ever get released on CD? I'll also second the recommendation of this one: I also like the one he did w/Lew Tabackin.
  8. :rsmile: Someone had to do it!
  9. I was jonesin' big time. I noticed some folks were able to get on the board this week when I looked in. I couldn't even get on, and then Jim posted on AAJ "hey you kids, get the fugoutta my yard!" so I just checked the AAJ board for updates. I'm glad that place served as an alternative, but I wish we still had something like Jim Dye's board as our emergency meeting place. Where the hell did Jim Dye disappear to? I would hate for the membership of this board to dissipate into cyberspace. Thanks for continuing to maintain this place, Jim. It's a real drag to be without it. Is it time for an Organissimo membership fund raiser? Just let us know. Welcome back, everyone! Live chat tonight perhaps?
  10. What? Has the board been down?
  11. Agree, Allen....obviously equipment is a factor to a varying degree, but look at some famous recordings done on less-than-ideal instruments. It didn't seem to matter what axe Bird was playing, he had HIS sound which prevailed regardless of the instrument.
  12. I love Rich Perry. That side w/Dick Oatts (who I also love) is really great, I second the recommendation.
  13. Isn't that what they call "guitar face"?
  14. Because of the voice, not the words spoken.
  15. I would add that players' sounds obviously evolve over the years, too, sometimes because of a changing conception, or physical changes in the player. I think a prime example is Sonny Rollins- while he is quite indentifiable in any era, many people have their "favorite Sonny" (like pre-Bridge vs. post-Bridge).
  16. Not a stupid question at all! Here's how I see it: Sound comes from -Equipment -Influences -Imagination/personal concept -Physical attributes (chops, use of air, shape of oral cavity, teeth etc.) I've always thought of it this way: a player's sound is the sum of their influences PLUS themself (their own input/concept). You can often tell who a player might have listened to (and been influenced by), and many don't escape "clone" status, but the players with the most memorable sounds add that extra personal ingredient that allows them to create an individual and identifiable sound. This to me is the problem with much of jazz education these days- so many players fail to develop beyond the "clone" step. The study of technique is a means to an end, not an end in itself. The search for one's own sound is as important (if not more) than technical expertise. IMHO. I still love Clark Terry's succinct explanation of development: "Imitate...Assimilate...Innovate".

  19. Hmmm, let's see...that's a tough one.........
  20. Good news RT! Glad to hear it's over with and that it went well. Now take it easy and heal up.
