  1. Rooster, Spontooneous and I just had lunch at a place I should have mentioned- D'Bronx Deli. Besides pizza and great sandwiches they have killer calzones. I was also reminded that I should mention Minsky's Pizza- also a good local option.
  2. Are you talking about Reggio's, Al? Nope! Wow, looks good! I never heard of that place. :rsmile:
  3. Are you talking about Reggio's, Al? I liked their pizza, too.
  4. Happy belated Birthday, Randy!
  5. I'd have to second Lon's choices (wow, I'd forgotten about Conan's, I loved their pizza!). Lon, you do have good taste in.........well, good taste. I also like Uno's (Chicago) and I don't think I've ever had a bad slice in NYC. There is an Uno's in KC (also Austin, I believe, in addition to others) but they're not as good as the Chicago original IMHO. I haven't found any place in KC that I'm wild about, though I do like Waldo Pizza. I make it at home quite often- I like to cook the crust a bit before putting the toppings on (to avoid soggy crust)- I also saute the veggies for a bit (for the same reason). I like sausage (or pepperoni), green pepper, onion and black olive. I also like the combination of canadian bacon and green olive. Not TOO much cheese. Damn, now I'm hungry...... :rsmile:

  9. I greatly appreciate all the positive responses. Thanks, folks! Elevation and humidity affect the production of sound- the sound itself doesn't really change much at all. Low humidity or cold make the lips dry, requiring some kind of lip balm. No such problem in Florida, there will be PLENTY of moisture to work with. I hate playing outdoors in the summer daytime- I sweat like a pig, and the sweat runs into my eyes making it impossible to read music. A change of elevation usually requires some adjustment- going to a higher elevation makes you feel short of breath until you adjust, but when you come back "down" you feel like you have superlungs! These changes also affect reed-players, especially the humidity factor. A lack of gigs DEFINITELY affects the sound, however.
  10. I'm trying to remember the piano player who Johnny worked with a lot- there's a picture of them on the piano at the Green Mill. I'm thinking it was Joe Vito- did I get the name right? I played with him a few times at the Mill.
  11. I'd have to say my initial years on the road (mid-late 1980s) with the Woody Herman band were some of the most exciting and musically formative years in my life thus far, but I strongly believe the best is yet to come. The trials of the last year led to the pursuit and acquisition my new job, and I'm confident that the next "chapter" is going to be a good one. I also hope anyone else here looking to improve their situation finds what they are looking for!
  12. That link didn't work for me- I just got a NYT sign-up screen.
  13. Wow, first Eldee Young and now Johnny Frigo. Sad news. Johnny Frigo was a great musician with a great sense of humor. Also, he was in part responsible for the great jazz standard "Detour Ahead" (IIRC, there was a framed lead sheet in Andy's). The legends are leaving us. RIP.
  14. I'm a Hermeto fan, I love pretty much everything he recorded. Very creative mind and some great chops on multiple instruments. It seems we've discussed him before (I remember many recommendations), was there a dedicated thread or was it part of a general Brazilian thread?
  15. Ah, good ol' PFunk. He did make things lively for a bit.
  16. Sounds good- I might add some paprika and/or some fresh chopped dill.
  17. As I sit here and type this it sounds like a battle zone in my neighborhood. I mean some big-ass M80 types of explosions. The significance of this holiday seems to be (for many) first and foremost an excuse to play with explosives. Now I enjoy a good fireworks display, but I really have no desire to mess around with this stuff- I can understand the adolescent fascination, but a lot of these people are guys my age. I guess since I don't currently have health insurance I'm being overly cautious. I'll bet this holiday is the least favorite of dogs. I always enjoy the local news this time of year when they drag out the dangers-of-fireworks-exploding-mannequins footage. Anyone here a closet pyro? Anyone have any good fireworks-related tales? Anyone have only eight fingers?* *shop teachers excluded

  19. I believe he's referring to the TANGO.
  20. I think this thread needs this.......
  21. OK, since YOU brought it up......did she also show you all seven positions? Do you doodle-tongue?
