  1. I'm trying to remember the piano player who Johnny worked with a lot- there's a picture of them on the piano at the Green Mill. I'm thinking it was Joe Vito- did I get the name right? I played with him a few times at the Mill.
  2. I'd have to say my initial years on the road (mid-late 1980s) with the Woody Herman band were some of the most exciting and musically formative years in my life thus far, but I strongly believe the best is yet to come. The trials of the last year led to the pursuit and acquisition my new job, and I'm confident that the next "chapter" is going to be a good one. I also hope anyone else here looking to improve their situation finds what they are looking for!
  3. That link didn't work for me- I just got a NYT sign-up screen.
  4. Wow, first Eldee Young and now Johnny Frigo. Sad news. Johnny Frigo was a great musician with a great sense of humor. Also, he was in part responsible for the great jazz standard "Detour Ahead" (IIRC, there was a framed lead sheet in Andy's). The legends are leaving us. RIP.
  5. I'm a Hermeto fan, I love pretty much everything he recorded. Very creative mind and some great chops on multiple instruments. It seems we've discussed him before (I remember many recommendations), was there a dedicated thread or was it part of a general Brazilian thread?
  6. Ah, good ol' PFunk. He did make things lively for a bit.
  7. Sounds good- I might add some paprika and/or some fresh chopped dill.
  8. As I sit here and type this it sounds like a battle zone in my neighborhood. I mean some big-ass M80 types of explosions. The significance of this holiday seems to be (for many) first and foremost an excuse to play with explosives. Now I enjoy a good fireworks display, but I really have no desire to mess around with this stuff- I can understand the adolescent fascination, but a lot of these people are guys my age. I guess since I don't currently have health insurance I'm being overly cautious. I'll bet this holiday is the least favorite of dogs. I always enjoy the local news this time of year when they drag out the dangers-of-fireworks-exploding-mannequins footage. Anyone here a closet pyro? Anyone have any good fireworks-related tales? Anyone have only eight fingers?* *shop teachers excluded
  9. Ethel Waters Run DMC Deep Throat
  10. I believe he's referring to the TANGO.
  11. I think this thread needs this.......
  12. OK, since YOU brought it up......did she also show you all seven positions? Do you doodle-tongue?
  13. Well, someone needs to teach him how to hold it correctly.
  14. Anyone been watching this documentary about crab-fishermen? The Discovery channel has been running it a lot lately. I think it's really fascinating stuff. These are some seriously bad-ass dudes. I'm also amazed that there are any crabs left in the sea with the huge amounts these boats can take. Very interesting series. Anyone here know anyone who does this sort of thing?
  15. Come on down! After all my years in the midwest I'm looking forward to having access to FRESH fish & seafood. Jim can visit as long as he leaves the 'bone at home.
  16. Update....... I went to Tallahassee a couple weeks ago to teach at the FSU jazz camp (no actual camping involved). I went down a few days early to look for a place to live- I rented a very nice townhouse (garage, deck (for the grill ), lots of space (closets! pantry!), W/D (which is great because I've been doing the laundromat scene for the past year and I'm ready to be done w/THAT), and a great location. The weather was hot and humid as predicted but not all that different from my days of living in Austin. I like the fact that I'm 90 minutes away from nice white-sand beaches. Hurricane season, well, we'll see what THAT'S all about soon enough. I also had the opportunity to hang & play with the rest of the faculty and was very impressed. They get out to play locally and in the area frequently, something that never happened with the faculty at my old school. Tallahassee is a nice city, not a big music scene but there are several places to play. So all in all I'm looking forward to the new job and change of scenery- I'm going to miss many of my KC friends, but this change is just what I need. So now I've got the next two weeks to pack and get ready for the movers on July 16th.
  17. OK Jim, what's up with the new avatar?
  18. Katz's Reuben.......mmmmmmmmmmmm! I sure loved those! Glad to hear Helen is up and about, Lon!
  19. Did "Live from the Showboat" ever get released on CD? I'll also second the recommendation of this one: I also like the one he did w/Lew Tabackin.
  20. :rsmile: Someone had to do it!
  21. I was jonesin' big time. I noticed some folks were able to get on the board this week when I looked in. I couldn't even get on, and then Jim posted on AAJ "hey you kids, get the fugoutta my yard!" so I just checked the AAJ board for updates. I'm glad that place served as an alternative, but I wish we still had something like Jim Dye's board as our emergency meeting place. Where the hell did Jim Dye disappear to? I would hate for the membership of this board to dissipate into cyberspace. Thanks for continuing to maintain this place, Jim. It's a real drag to be without it. Is it time for an Organissimo membership fund raiser? Just let us know. Welcome back, everyone! Live chat tonight perhaps?
  22. What? Has the board been down?
