Roxy and Elsewhere is definitely a winner IMHO. Some amazing Bruce Fowler solos (as well as ensemble playing)- check out "Don't You Ever Wash That Thing?" and also some grooving George Duke solos ("Village Of The Sun"). Juvenile humor, yes. I like juvenile humor as it comes from FZ. BTW; Zappa=best tune titles ever.

Movie: Fantastic 4
Free For All replied to connoisseur series500's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Haven't seen it yet, but from the clips I've seen the Thing doesn't look "rocky" enough. Someone said you could see the suit wrinkle every now and then. I loved the comic though, so I'll probably see it eventually. I'm still hopeful for...... -

make any recent Dusty Groove orders?
Free For All replied to CJ Shearn's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Just ordered several things mentioned in this thread. I shouldn't even come here. -
Count me in as a Brookmeyer fan. I think his improvisations have a lot of continuity and good development of ideas, and he swings too. I'm really a fan of his arranging/composing though. He's definitely one of the heaviest in that area IMHO, up there with Bill Holman. Regarding Mulligan, I like his playing (even if my favorite baritonist is Pepper), arranging and LOVE the CJB. To each his own.

Apparently your rebuttal was not so subtle. Good Thad Jones tune, BTW.

Can you imagine the cost of the inventory? Customers have to pay for this - it ain't free. OTOH, Dusty's inventory ain't as big as JRM's back room. I love DG, but they manage their inventory "with care". ← I understand- you're preachin' to the choir! If there was a place like JRM here, I'd support it and pay a little extra to help with the overhead. I miss the fun of going through the inventory one at a time. The only good indie store in KC has become extremely lame, so it's the internet for me. Convenient and cheaper, yes. Romantic and nostalgic, no. Unless of course I have an excuse to go to Chicago!
-
I agree with those who think JRM is often pricey, but I still think that anyone who is a fan of the music should not miss the opportunity to check it out at least once. So much good stuff under one roof. I buy a lot online these days, but I love when I get the opportunity to browse in person. I would also like to check out "da bastards" sometime, though. And Hot House.

I didn't think the responses were particularly angry or nasty. Just some regulars bein' themselves. Definitely don't take any of it personally though, clandy44. One thing that is for certain around here is that you never know what direction a "conversation" is going to take when you post something. Just part of this odd little cyberworld we frequent.

Jazz Record Mart

Where to begin? It will mess you up good. New and used CDs and LPs. HUGE selection. Decent but not rock bottom prices. Stuff you seldom see elsewhere. I know I can find pretty much anything I want online these days, but I miss the browsing process- I used to spend a whole day there looking (with a lunch break). It's the ultimate browsing experience. With the whole family along it might not be a practical destination, unless you can get away for at least an hour or two. Send 'em to Giordano's- they're fairly slow. I'm sure others will add their endorsements.

Candidate Cities to host 2012 Olympic Games
Free For All replied to EKE BBB's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I wouldn't wish this logistical nightmare on anyone, but if you want them to choose Madrid, EKE BBB, I wish you luck. I'd actually be interested to see Paris as the choice, just to see what kind of job they do. EDIT: Just checked out the latest poll results. Other than national pride, do we really want this event to take place in New York? I think it's time to let someone else deal with it. The security forces in NYC don't really need this extra stress right now, do they? -
Okay, I saw it today, and I must say it totally kicked ass. Your mileage may vary however. I did notice many of the continuity problems, like "they're in his ex's house, why don't they just eat food that's already there" etc. The older person in me notices lapses in common sense like that, but the kid in me tends to get absorbed in the "Spielberg-ness" of it all. Thank god for that, because that's the same kid that provides the imagination to improvise and write music. The "kid" is not rooted in reality, but that's a good thing IMHO. A sense of "fantasy" and 'whimsy" are not particularly useful in dealing with day-to-day reality, but are essential to the creative process IHMO. And I have no "Cruise aversion", so that wasn't an issue. Yes, the aliens were kind of alternatively smart/stupid. That didn't ruin it for me though. The visuals and sounds were total Spielberg and IMHO more than made up for lapses in continuity. I sympathize with those who were disappointed- while this was a very good film (I'd give it a strong "A" but not an "A+") it wasn't a "Spielberg reinvents the genre" movie like some of his others. And yes, the ending was rushed and not wholly satisfying. I must say, however, that I really enjoyed the film. BTW, did anyone notice the "grandparents" in the last scene were Gene Barry and (I believe) his female co-star from the original WOTW film? I guess this was announced on some of the "spoiler" sites, but I didn't realize until I read it during the end credits. I thought it was funny they gave the grandparents such a long screen shot (when they had no lines in the film), but when I figured out who they were I understood. Cool. Edited to correct stupid spelling mistakes.

In Spanish is he known as "El Dar"?
-
At this stage he's mostly a mirror of his influences- Oscar Peterson will emerge for a moment, then Herbie, then McCoy, etc. Actually pretty fascinating to watch. I know that when I teach I continually stress the importance of listening to recordings. Well, here's a kid who's been doing that, and he is able to imitate their style to a point that's scary. Of course, imitation is just the first step. As Clark Terry says "Imitate- Assimilate- Innovate"!

Another "young prodigy" who has lived up to the hype is Ryan Kisor. He had some rough moments early on, but has turned into an excellent player. Regarding Eldar- SS, I recently played with Eldar at a festival and must say I was impressed. Yes, he depends primarily upon his prodigious technique at this stage, but given he's only 18 that doesn't surprise me. The "self-editing" process will come with maturity, IMHO. Also, he's not used to playing behind others, so his comping is predictably heavy and overly busy. What impressed me was his personality and attitude- he's a nice kid who's eager to learn and is sincerely respectful of his peers and elders (no pun intended). I watched him get "dressed down" a couple times by players who wanted him to thin out his comping, and his reaction was not to pout or roll his eyes- instead he made an effort to comply. Now whether his quick rise to success and manipulation by the record execs change this remains to be seen. Hopefully not. For now I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

In case anyone is watching Conan tonight, Eldar is going to be the musical guest.

Hmmm.....Amarillo....Taco Cabana for dinner!

Sorry dsgtrane, we kind of went off-topic with our Green Mill musings. The Jazz Showcase is definitely (aka "definately") the best "family-type" hang. No smoke, fewer "characters". Not too far from Jazz Record Mart as well. Have fun!
