I thought this thread was going to be about the Chicago jazz scene in the 60s and 70s. Now that I'd like to hear about. EDIT: Oops! Chuck beat me to it. Actually, I immediately thought about him as the ultimate resource on this topic (the city, not the group).

They were a bunch of DePaul students who decided to start a band. There's a hot dog place under the "L" stop at Fullerton (near the DePaul music school)called "Demon Dog" that's owned/operated by the guy who managed the group- it's full of Chicago memorabilia and they play nothing but Chicago. All the time. Think I'd go a little nuts with that. Great dogs, though.

Happy Birthday Vonski! Many fond memories of the jams at the Apartment Lounge and the Green Mill.

I'm with you 100%, O2L. This is some healin' music! Good to see you posting. -
I loved the Match Game. Swingin' Safari! I remember getting to watch it when I was sick and got to stay home from school. I loved that cool microphone that Gene had. Very state-of-the-art for then. I still watch these on the Game Show channel on cable- I most like to watch for the period aspect- hair, clothes, prizes, non-pc behavior, smoking on camera, etc. I was watching an old Let's Make A Deal and the contestant won the grand prize, which was a BRAND NEW GREMLIN, RETAIL VALUE $2000!!! A crappy car to be sure, but a fond memory of when cars cost less and had less techno crap to break. Back then you could do so many more repairs yourself. We should also talk about shows like Mike Douglas and Merv Griffin- both of them featured jazz artists from time to time like Jack Sheldon, Frank Rosolino, etc. I sure miss the Tonight show that I grew up with. I think that hearing that band every night helped turn me into a jazz fan. It's so lame now. You Don't Say- that was hosted by Tom Kennedy, right? I liked him.

Wow, some of you guys are hard to please . I just got mine today and am thrilled to have this collection- my first Mosaic was the Thad/Mel and I remember thinking back then what a great Mosaic the Mulligan would make. I've always heard this group referred to as the "Concert Jazz Band". I think that was Mulligan's choice to make it clear that it this was a creative composers' group, not a commercial dance band. I wonder why the Mosaic refers to this as just the "Concert Band". Splitting hairs, I know- just wondering. -
OK, Rooster, I'm gettin' excited too. Unheard Woody is always huge incentive. "The Brown Queen"? Hey, where's that other thread...................Conn500?

Right. There's no evidence that the 1 star person has even heard the music. At least the one who gave it 5 stars seems to be familiar with it, if not in the format of the Mosaic set. I usually don't pay much attention to the site reviews anyway. -

Uh.....so, Moose, you're saying the guy who gave it one star has a point by saying the 5 star guy should hold off until the set is released? I haven't heard the Mosaic set yet, but I've heard most of what's going to be on it and based on that alone feel confident in giving it a high rating RIGHT NOW! I guess that's more of a recommendation than a review- I guess they could totally screw up the sound, but I doubt that'll happen. The other guy's one star rating seems to be directed more towards the 5 star guy than the music itself. He is rating the other review, which doesn't help matters much either. None of this is worth getting excited about (since your original comment was offered with green smilie which indicates "humorous intent"), I just feel compelled to respond to any post that begins with "Uh........" ! -

I find it hard to find fault with this music on any level. It's long been some of my favorite large ensemble music. The arrangements are great, not dated at all to my ears. The live version of "All About Rosie" is outstanding, some really advanced contrapuntal writing. There are some insprired solos- the exchange between Clark and Gerry on "Blueport" where they get into a quote-fest is one of my favorite moments. And how can it not swing with Mel Lewis at the helm? It's smart and it's fun. I'll be very surprised if anyone who hasn't heard this yet is disappointed. -
I preordered from CDUniverse so they probably won't arrive 'til after the 7th. Your plan sounds like it might be a good one. I'll call you!

October's gonna be off to a great start- Mulligan and the new Conns! That last smilie is for all the bread I'm dropping for these and the Miles.

"The Thing With Two Heads"- wasn't that the original title for "Double Clutching" from Coltrane Time? -
Hi, uks, and welcome to the board. Regarding your last point, I would be one to say that the group of four sixteenths would be played straight (in almost any situation). As the tempo increases, there comes a point when it becomes detrimental to the swing feel to try to swing individual notes. If you listen to any bop-based players (like Bird, Clifford, Stitt, Rollins, etc.) you'll notice that on bright tempos the eighths are pretty much straight- the swing effect comes from accenting/ghosting specific notes( like high/low notes, isolated notes, etc.). Trying to swing each note in a line would result in a extremely "bouncy" feel that is inappropriate to modern (from bop on) style. Regarding your initial question, I've seen a LOT of lead sheets and scores with the combination of notation you're referring to. I think that writing swing rhythms as dotted eigth/sixteenth or even sudivided triplets conveys a stylistically wrong concept. Just go to a high school jazz festival sometime and you'll hear LITERAL interpretation of this by directors who don't know any better. But that's a whole 'nuther thread.................. In my opinion, the modern swing style usually consists of combination of straight (or almost-straight) eighths, swung eighths and stategic accents. The only time each eighth is swung would be on tunes at specific tempos (like Lil' Darlin' or Girl Talk or something like that) and that is usually a case of playing the eighths legato and adding a slight accent on the upbeats. I'll be curious to see what others might have to say about this..........................

One of the baddest of the bad. The way Ray Milland stands behind Rosie. And the socially-conscious dialogue! Worse than Plan 9, IMHO. Just outstanding in its lame-osity. Almost worth owning for parties, like the Shatner CD. -
I don't think I saw those in the example book I was looking at. Imagine- you're at the gym showering and someone says "Wow, is that a Charles Rennie Macintosh, or are you just glad to see me?". How about a permanent Rooster tie?

Yeah, she's not the type you'd expect to do something like that. In college while I was jamming and skipping classes, she was in the library studying. Thank goodness one of us took the book-learnin' seriously. She has such a straight-ahead personality in every way, I think this was her way of being a little wild. I'm all for wild.

I was in a tattoo shop once looking through the book of examples. Man-oh-man you wouldn't believe where some people get tattoos! And pretty elaborate ones! OUCH!! Piercings, too- I don't know how some of these cats are able to comfortably go to sleep at night with all the hardware.

My wife has two tattoos, one on the ankle and one on the small of her back- flower/butterfly kind of stuff. She's gotten one a year for the last two years. I figure in about 10 years she'll be a biker chick. Me, I have none- you can't make me get near needles of any kind! jacman, yours sound pretty interesting..............
