  1. I was about to tackle this... So many splendid covers in the series! A favorite:
  2. The Bobby Jaspar essay on Elvin Jones was first published in the April 1958 issue of Jazz Hot under the title 'The Jones Renew the Language of the Drums'. It described the playing of Elvin and Philly Joe Jones. The original article was accompanied by notes from André Hodeir. Jaspar mentioned the problems he had dealing at first with the complexities of Elvin Jones' drumming and how when he grasped the intricacies he managed to develop further his own style.

    Vernon Story

Vernon Story was a name I sometime crossed upon when reading the French jazz reviews back in the '50s. Here is a photo taken at the 1948 Nice jazz festival where he played with Rex Stewart. PHOTO REMOVED BY REQUEST OF THE COPYRIGHT HOLDER.
  7. Andrew Hill 'Black Fire' (BN, NY label, mono)
  8. Please tell us more. I'm afraid I don' know any more--this was on the dustygroove upcoming releases list. That looks like the Fabulous Paul Bley Quintet albums that came out on America in 1971. The group with Don Cherry, Ornette Coleman, Bley, Charlie Haden and Billy Higgins recorded at the Hillcrest club. Paul Bley sold copies of the tapes to America for release.
  9. The AP obituary that is being widely reprinted in newspapers today.
