  1. The story brings more attention than what's happening in neighboring Darfur! Very sad!
  2. Just a reminder that WB released some ten years ago a 3CD set 'Monterey Jazz Festival - 40 Legendary Years', an interesting compilation of various appearances by the likes of Dizzy Gillespie, Billie Holiday, CannonBall Adderley, Thelonious Monk, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Charles Mingus at Monterey!

From the Knoxville News Sentinel today:
  4. Sad news! Have heard too little from him. Liked what I heard. Need to investigate his recorded output further!
  5. Wish it was available BUT... ... that Vancouver gig is not mentioned in the very thorough Chuck Ralston site that deals with all matters Scott LaFaro http://www.geocities.com/chuck_ralston/08_slf.htm
  6. Orin Keepnews who produced the sessions for the Prestige album wrote in his liner notes: 'By one of those coincidences you would flatly refuse to accept in a movie script, the ballad 'Gooodbye' (Jug's own choice) was the last number of the last day. That, of course, means that it was his goodbye, because this was the last time Gene ever recorded. Less than five months later his then undected cancer had killed him. 'Goodbye' was recorded on March 20, 1974. It was the only tune recorded on that Jug's final session!
  7. That's 'Lazy Lively Love'. Not only there is Lawrence Brown, but also Buck Clayton, Ruby Braff, Buster Bailey, Claude Hopkins and others! Very nice easy listening jazz with plenty of solo spaces. George Williams did the arrangements. A Jackie Gleason Select would not be a bad idea!
  8. Art Farmer 'On the Road' (Contemporary) with Art Pepper, Hampton Hawes, Ray Brown, Steve Ellington and Shelly Manne
  9. They're excellent! Probably hard to find. Distribution (even in Paris stores) seems pretty uneven. The group was producing exciting music that evening. The second volume has variations on Thelonious Monk compositions. I have a slight preference for volume 1 which has Tyler compositions with the exception of a thrilling interpretation of Joe Liggin's 'Honeydripper'.
  10. Dexter Gordon Complete SteepleChase box, disc 4
  11. Not a bad one (is there a bad Hank Jones album?)... Pretty good album in fact! My Laserlight copy looks like this and fails to mention anywhere the name of Manny Albam who wrote interesting string arrangements for the session. That said, there is a good dozen Hank Jones discs I would go for before getting this one!
  12. Reading those contracts is quite a fascinating inside view of the workings of jazzmen's extramusical doings Thanks for posting them
  13. James Moody 'Don't Look Away Now' (Prestige) with Barry Harris, Bob Cranshaw, Alan Dawson
  14. No other dates beside Marciac for Shorter in France so far...
  15. Billy Hart 'Enchance' (Horizon) with Eddie Henderson, Oliver Lake, Dewey Redman, Don Pullen, etc...
  16. From Reuters/Billboard
  17. Roy Eldridge Complete Verve, disc 5
  18. We see quite a number of dumb posts every day on this board
  19. The J.R. Monterose In Action was one of the first vinyl releases from VSOP. It does not seem to have been reissued by the label on CD. This was a very nice session.
  20. We have to sign a petition calling Alan Lankin to come back!!! OK where do I sign?
  21. Charles Mingus 'Tonight At Noon' (Atlantic, mono, red and purple label)
  22. Favorite Prestige Garlands are the trio sides he recorded with Paul Chambers and Art Taylor - 'A Garland of Red' - 'Red Garland's Piano' - 'Groovy' The trio was also at its best when accompanying John Coltrane for 'Traneing In', 'Soultrane' and 'Settin' the Pace'.
