  1. Seems that chewy and I hit a raw nerve! I might reconsider my opinion on ECM when they release something in this vein To put porcy62 mind at ease, I live a few meters away from the place that was once the Clos des Bernardins convent now being renovated
  2. Have yet to see that catalogue. Anything from ECM tends to be on the pretentious side these days!
  3. Dick Wetmore (Bethlehem/Toshiba 10-incher) very interesting violin playing! Thanks to Pete B. who provided this rare item
  4. The CD does have the music for 'Sweet Smell of Success' and the music for 'Repulsion'! The Film Music of Chico Hamilton

    Bud Freeman

It took me way too long to get into Bud Freeman's playing... It was not until the release of the Commodore Mosaic boxes to find out how original he was! Great fan of the articulation of his solos by now. One unheralded session is the Flying Dutchman LP 'Bud and Bucky' with Bucky Pizzarelli. Bud Freeman looking like the perfect British gentleman!
  6. Some I have constantly missed (or could not afford): Ruby Braff 'Around the World' (UA) Arnett Cobb 'Ballads' (Moodsville) Red Mitchell 'Rejoice' (PacificJazz) Randy Weston/Lem Winchester 'New Faces at Newport' (MetroJazz)

  8. From AP: Get well, very soon, King!
  9. Max Harrison did! George Avakian added some impressions.
  10. Originally due out in Europe last November 26. Should be really out next week! Got an advance copy. Like it but it does not knock me out. The last Rollins that really did it for me was 'This Is What I Do'! Will get back to that 'Sonny, Please'...
  11. It's Teddy outside and inside the 3CD Complete BN Recordings from Capitol Records Inc.! I have. Those crazy Dutch did it

    Esmond Edwards

Very impressive, in fact Many of his best Prestige covers were designed by Reid Miles! A shame that his death still seems to be ignored by the Media!
  14. Tony Scott and his Buddies 'Play Gypsy' (Signature, stereo) Tony's buddies being Mundell Lowe, Jimmy Garrison and Pete LaRoca!

  17. I like this one, too! Purchased the vinyl box. Never cared much for Shearing's studio sessions on Capitol but the released concerts are thoroughly enjoyable albums. It's also a very good opportunity to marvel at the impeccable drumming of Vernel Fournier! That 1963 concert at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium is a delight!

    Esmond Edwards

The death of photographer Esmond Edwards has been reported last week on a couple of sites. I have not seen any obituary about it in the traditional media. Edwards was responsible for some of the best covers on Prestige albums and other labels. The Esmond Edwards page at CTSImages One of my favorite of his Prestige albums cover:
  19. First real day of winter here. Time to juice up on Vin Chaud (Hot Wine) Will need to get more cinammon for the next few days!
  20. Max Roach + Four 'At Newport' (Mercury/Japan) with Booker Little and George Coleman
  21. It's West Coast big band, dammit! You should already have this one!
  22. Thanks for the update Ghost, I feel relieved!
  23. Fully agree with Steven. Those SagaJazz sets are really excellent. They have also released Charlie Parker and Billie Holiday sets that are very well thought out and mastered.

That Proper 'West Coast Jazz' is indeed pretty thorough and very good value.
