  1. Not 1961 (John Ore was Monk's bass player then) but 1963. 5/23/63! Sound from the show is very good, at least on the Eastwind vinyl (Thelonious Monk 1963 in Japan) I have. A classic concert by the classic quartet. A nice opportunity to hear Butch Warren's bass playing!
  2. Yes, there was an album of Elmer Bernstein's music for that film out on Decca but the album shown on the previous post is all Chico Hamilton. The music on the record was penned by Fred Katz and Chico Hamilton. All quintet music (with Paul Horn, Joe Pisano, Carson Smith) except for two tracks which have uncredited appearances by Conte Candoli and Frank Rosolino (I'm pretty sure of those two).
  3. No idea what's going to be on that one and if it will have the soundtrack from 'Repulsion' (don't think the music made it to disc) but I'm sure it will have the music from this remarkable film:
  4. Coleman Hawkins Quartet 'Blowin' Up a Breeze' (Spotlite) Coleman Hawkins plays the Windy City
  5. Bobby Hutcherson 'Dialogue' (BN, mono)

  10. Rooting for Rooster too! Weather permitting, should be a success story
  11. Was looking for the Backroom when the Board went down today and could not find it... Has the place disappeared?
  12. Things went from bad to worse for EMI right after they put down the old BNBB

    Invisible Orchard! This One!
  14. Tommy Flanagan 'Lonely Town' (BN/King) with Joe Benjamen and Elvin Jones
  15. The Japanese reissues of Prestige albums have been excellent. Almost as good as the BN vinyls from King Japan. The Riverside reissues from Japan are another story. I refer to the Japanese Riversides which came out in the 70s. Must say I have been disappointed too often with the thin sound of a number of Riverside originals as far as dynamics are concerned! But the quality of the pressings of those Japanese vinyls is uniformly outstanding.

    The Gigolo

Wish I had heard Lee Morgan in the '60s but never had the chance But I spent several evenings at the Club Saint-Germain when he played there with Blakey's Messengers in 1958. The proceedings were recorded for RCA France and were released on 3 well-known LPs!

    Shorty Rogers

Fresh Sound did put out the Shorty Rogers RCA albums on CD. They even issued the 'Invisible Orchard' album which had never been released by RCA. That one was recorded in 1961 will the usual Rogers regulars (Stu Williamson, Al Porcino, Conte Candoli, Frank Rosolino, Harold Land, Bill Perkins, Pete Jolly, Mel Lewis, et al). As mentioned somewhere else, this should be a thing of a past since Fresh Sound lost their RCA distribution deal recently!

    Shorty Rogers

Not sure if this 2CD compilation is the one chewy refers to but got this one for about the same price and it turned out to be a good overview of Shorty Rogers' career up to the late '50s!
  19. Johnny 'Hammond' Smith 'Talk That Talk' (New Jazz, mono) with guest: Oliver Nelson
  20. Looks like it's not going to happen any time soon, but I'm another one who would be highly interested in reading an anthology of Terry Martin articles!
  21. Oh my Was that so long ago... I remember those and thought these came from La Voix de Son Maitre. VSM also released some of them. Had a couple of them but I have not seen those in a long, long time...
  22. Grachan Moncur!!
