  1. There is an interesting interview of Sonny Rollins in today's edition of the Paris newspaper Liberation (for people reading French only, sorry!) prior to his concert at the Antibes/Juan les Pins festival this evening Liberation Rollins The interview mentions that McCoy Tyner had to cancel his appearance at the festival this week after he was hospitalized. Rollins sounds very upset! Could not find anything else about McCoy's health. Hope he will back on his feet very soon!
  2. For some reason, I do not see even part of your collection being in disarray. Seems like a very unique Cannonball LP. Only about two-third of it is properly stored. The rest is a mess! I knew I had that Cannonball vinyl somewhere
  3. 4. One version I heard at the time was that Charles Tyler did not want to make the European tour with Albert Ayler. And went on to other things. The combined sound of the Ayler brothers, Tyler and Sampson would really have been something! Too bad it did not happen.
  5. I was going oblique on that reissue but cannot let that Handcock go by
  6. Spinning two albums which I was happy to locate while continuing to clear the mess of part of my vinyls section: Cannonball Adderley 'Cannonball Adderley In Europe' Riverside mono original with foldout cover plus a four-page insert about Cannonball and about the Comblain festival founder Joe Napoli next: Tete Montoliu 'Temas Latinoamericanos' (Ensayo)
  7. Peter, the few Riverside white covers I have heard sounded good to very good! Those white covers were not issued past 1956 or 1957. Sonic quality of the later Riverside releases tended to me somehow erratic with some albums lacking the regular crispness of the earlier LPs. This showed more often on stereo releases. The Japanese vinyl reissues of many Riversides had the same problem and I do not remember running into this with the other Japanese vinyls reissues. Many of those pretty often sounded as the next best thing to the original US issues.
  8. Be Happy Bop Birthday
  9. The package was delivered today, three days after I put in my order! Very impressive Bad news was the French customs people who decided to add a $20 bill for opening the package and check what was inside And me who thought this did not happen with book shipments from the USA! Had a quick peek at the Ramsey book. Looks mighty awesome. Will read it when I get to southern France later this month!
  10. July 2Z1: 1930 - Louis Armstrong and his New Sebastian Cotton Club Orchestra (Les Hite, Charlie Holmes, Lionel Hampton, etc...) record session for Okeh ('I'm a Ding Dong Daddy', 'Confessin'', 'If I Could be With You', etc...) 1952 - Illinois Jacquet (Count Basie, Hank Jones, Freddie Green, Ray Brown, Jimmy Crawford) record session for Mercury/Clef 1954 - Chet Baker Quartet (Russ Freeman, Carson Smith, Bob Neal) record session, released on Mosaic (The Complete Chet Baker Pacific Jazz Live) 1955 (also July 27) - Thelonious Monk Trio (Oscar Pettiford, Kenny Clarke) record session for Riverside (Thelonious Monk Plays Duke Ellington) 1955 (also July 29, Aug. 5) - Cannonball Adderley (Nat Adderley, Jimmy Cleveland, Jerome Richardson, Cecil Payne, John Williams, Paul Chambers, Kenny Clarke) record session for EmArcy (Julian Cannonball Adderley) 1957 - Sonny Clark (Art Farmer, Curtis Fuller, Hank Mobley, Wilbur Ware, Louis Hayes) record session for BN (Dial S For Sonny) 1958 - Duke Ellington and his Orchestra record session for Columbia (Newport 1958) 1959 - Max Roach Quintet (Tommy Turrentine, Julian Priester, Stanley Turrentine, Bob Boswell) record session for Mercury (Quiet As It's Kept) 1959 (also July 22) - Chet Baker (Herbie Mann, Zoot Sims, Pepper Adams, Bill Evans, Earl May, Clifford Jarvis) record session for Riverside (Chet Baker Plays the Best of Lerner and Lowe) 1961 - Clark Terry Quartet (Junior Mance, Joe Benjamin, Charles Persip) record session for Moodsville (Everything's Mellow) 1965 (also July 22) - Yusef Lateef Quartet (George Arvanitas, Reggie Workman, James Black) record session for Impulse (Psychicemotus) 1965 (also July 22) - Shirley Scott (Gary McFarland, Jimmy Raney, Bob Cranshaw, Mel Lewis, Willie Rodriguez) record session for Impulse (Latin Shadows) 1967 - Bobby Hutcherson (Herbie Hancock, Albert Stinson, Joe Chambers) record session for BN (Oblique) 1967 - Albert Ayler Quartet (Don Ayler, Richard Davis, Milford Graves) perform at John Coltrane funeral, released on Revenant (Holy Ghost)
  11. There is also a rather detailed account of the event in the so-so biography of Rahsaan 'Bright Moments' by John Kruth. The account includes recollections by Joe Texidor and Ron Burton.
  12. The Bleu Regard releases from Charles Tyler are available via Cadence. These include 'Folly Fun Magic Music', 'Midwestern Drifter', the reissue of 'Voyage from Jericho' and 'Live In Europe'. Missing on the last one but all the others are highly recommendable discs. And Tyler's first album on ESP is still available! A smashing debut!
  13. Charles Tyler Ensemble 'Voyage From Jericho' (Ak-Ba) one of the essential albums by the sadly neglected Charles Tyler! Tyler was born 64 years ago to the day!
  14. Thanks for the reminder, Clifford! Tyler is an unrecognized giant! And thanks to Chuck Nessa for having produced one of his essential record! Tyler lived in Europe for the last part of his presence on Earth! He died in the southern France port of Toulon in 1992! I spent an afternoon with Tyler while in New York back in 1967 when he was rehearsing a group that included Majid Chabazz on drums and an incredibly talented bassclarinet player by the name of Donald Strickland. Tyler had trouble making ends meet at the time. The group never recorded. As far as I know, Strickland never got anywhere and never made a record. Glad that the French label Bleu Regard has issued a number of Tyler albums! They're all excellent.
  15. I may have that one somewhere. Could go and start searching for it if needed...
  16. July 20: 1950 - Leo Parker Quartet (Al Haig, Oscar Pettiford, Max Roach) record session which was released on Prestige 1956 - Hank Mobley (Donald Byrd, Jackie McLean, Barry Harris, Doug Watkins, Art Taylor) record session for Prestige (Mobley's Message) 1959 (also July 24) - Billy Taylor (Herbie Mann, Frank Wess, Phil Bodner, Jerome Richardson, Dave Bailey, etc...) record session for Riverside (Billy Taylor With Four Flutes) 1961 - Cliff Jackson's Washboard Wanderers (Ed Allen, Rudy Powell, Elmer Snowden, Abe Bolar, Floyd Casey) record session for Swingville (Cliff Jackson/Dick Wellstood Uptown and Lowdown) 1961 - Wynton Kelly Trio (Paul Chambers, Jimmy Cobb) record session for Vee Jay (Wynton Kelly) 1967 (also July 21) - Dexter Gordon Quartet (Kenny Drew, NHOP, Albert Heath) at the Montmartre, released on Black Lion (The Montmartre Collection) 1973 - Jackie McLean/Dexter Gordon (Kenny Drew, NHOP, Alex Riel) at the Montmartre, released on SteepleChase 1975 - Bill Evans (Eddie Gomez) at the Montreux festival, released on Fantasy (Montreux III)
  17. I have the book on order from Barnes and Noble. It's on its way. Total cost including express shipping to France is $45! Amazon.fr had this item at something like $129 (with probably shome shipping added). And that was for one of those 'used mint' copy!
  18. Thought this track 4 had been pinned a long time ago. Spontooneous identified it. It humbled me to have failed getting to this particular track. The second saxophonist who plays tenor usually pulled out a saxella on this tune. Had to check on the liner notes to the original album to find out! And gave the whole album a spin. Very enjoyable one, thanks Jim for making me return to that one! Will post impressions (few accurate identifications so far) on disc 2 over the weekend when I give that disc a further listening!
  19. S.A.R., thanks for providing the link. A very thorough website! Guess this replaces the former Bill Evans fanzine (Letter to Evans, was it?).

  21. Brownie, what's "reasonable"? I have a few of these "Complete" sets and I'd like to get them all. Unfortunatley, Red Trumpet, the only place that stocks them, wants almost $45 + shipping for each of them. Too rich for me. I'd buy both of these sets if they were reasonable and since you don't want that JJ set, let me know how much it is. I might be interested. Kevin ← Kevin, both sets were €20 ($24) each. Bought the two of them, sorry! Took the plunge on the JJ mainly for the Brownie session! The sets are as new, with all the trimmings including obis! Starting to listen to the Birdland set which sounds very good! Although Blakey's cymbals tent to saturate... Will have to compare with the 47W63rd vinyls I have.
  22. Thanks Lon (and Chuck) for the superfast answers! The only BN sound I am really enamored is the one on the original BN mono vinyls! With the King vinyls reissues next to those. I like some of the other attempts at capturing the sound of the original releases but not all of these. I have the two sets on hold and since the price is reasonable will get the Night at Birdland one and decide then if I need more. Thanks again!
  23. May I suggest George Russell's 'New York, NY'? Not exactly in the same mood but there is Coltrane on that one too and a lot of smashing solos and arrangements!
  24. There are a couple of BN Complete Series from Japan 2CD sets 'Art Blakey, A Night at Birdland' and 'The Eminent JJ Johnson' available at a local store. I already have 'The Amazing Bud Powell' from this series and failed to see any significant improvement on sound over what I already had on vinyl and CDs! Are the Blakey and the JJ any better over what has already been reissued? Anybody has a full list of this 'Complete Series'?
  25. Horace Silver 'Finger Poppin With the Horace Silver Quintet' BN mono 47W63rd
