  1. This would be more sad news! We've had enough of those notices recently... Too many bass players gone away these past few months!
  2. What a strange compilation this turned out to be! The Armstrong ('C'Est Si Bon!) and the Ellington ('Take the A Train') segments were the GoodYear shorts which have been seen hundreds of times before. The rest was taken from the Berendt TV shows. This included: - the Thelonious Monk Quartet (without Charlie Rouse) playing 'Round Midnight'. Great intro shot showing Monk's feet dancing around the piano pedals... - Baden Powell (with Steve Swallow and ? - was that Bobby Moses?) playing 'Samba Triste', - the Miles Davis Quintet (with Shorter, Hancock, Carter and Tony Williams) playing a medley improvisation - tunes from 'ESP' - which was roughly edited so that Miles was heard briefly and Shorter was left out! But Miles looked magnificient in his striped Italian suit! - the Dave Brubeck Quartet (with Desmond, Wright, Morello) playing - what else... - 'Take Five', - Carmen McRae (with the non-announced Kenny Clarke/Francy Boland big band in 'I Wish I Were In Love Again'. Too short but so nice to see Benny Bailey, Idrees Sulieman, Ake Persson, Klook among the musicians - Albert Mangelsdorf's group playing 'Now Jazz Rawmong', - George Lewis and NO veterans playing 'Mahoganny Hall Stomp' and the Cannonball Adderley Sextet (with Nat, Yusef Lateef, Zawinul, Sam Jones and Louis Hayes) swinging thru the 'Jive Samba'. With Arte will air soon non-edited shows of some of those broadcasts!
  3. The AP story (by Anita Snow, a good friend!) does not mention that Ibrahim Ferrer returned this week to Havana after a grueling one-month tour of Europe that ended last Tuesday at the Marciac jazz festival. Heard a live broadcast of his performance there and he sounded very good! Sad to see these veteran Cuban musicians and singers from the Buena Vista Social Club disappear one after the other!
  4. The Seattle Times also had this obituary on Lucky Thompson in their edition today. Thompson spent the final years of his life in Seattle. The article has interesting reminiscences from several people - including ex-Duke Ellington trombone player John Sanders - who saw him there. The article features what looks like a recent portrait of Lucky Thompson http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/loca...ws.xml&items=16
  5. Makelele's name has also been mentioned to reinforce the French team. Don't think it's a good thing! They might as well bring back Michel Platini if they're trying to revamp the team
  6. No mirror for me. That's how I get to read Organissimo every time I walk in here! Mais oui, Monsieur!
  7. The New York Times has this obituary today.
  8. Thanks for the reminder, Claude! Would have hated to miss this. Will take a look at it from my current residence which is equiped with a black/white TV set which will fit right in. Trust that ARTE will have a rerun of the program in time to videotape it after I get back home next week!
  9. I am currently in southwestern France, not very far from Marciac where the annual jazz festival got started this week. Not very much interested in the first week shows. I will unfortunately be away for the second week when several shows are worth the attention. For anyone who wants to hear the proceedings, the evening programs are being broadcast every day (though I am not so sure about Saturdays and Sundays) a few minutes after 2000GMT on the national network France-Inter. You can tune in at: http://www.radiofrance.fr/chaines/france-i...zzinmarciac.php Click on 'Ecouter en direct' Randy Weston's African Rhythm Trio (with Alex Blake and Neil Clarke) and Wayne Shorter (with Danilo Perez, John Patitucci and Brian Blade) perform at Marciac on Saturday, August 13.
  10. He was Little only by name. He brought a lot of pleasure around. Another one who will be missed!
  11. Looks like Zidane was pressured to take that decision by the Adidas brass! Zidane is one of Adidas top star! Zidane's decision came on the day it was announced that Adidas had struck a deal with Reebok an bought their rival!
  12. A very happy birthday to the Wise One No need to be concerned about reaching the half-century mark, young man! Believe me! Your best years are ahead of you
  13. JC was first with the sad news. I rarely go there and stumbled on the item! Then posted the news here and quoted the JC item. AAJ later started a thread of its own which quoted my first post here but they did not mention where it came from and they also eliminated the JC mention. http://forums.allaboutjazz.com/showthread.php?t=10521 Found this totally ridiculous! I am not posting at AAJ these days and now intend to stay away from that Forum! (sorry for taking this thread away from its original purpose!)
  14. Afraid I'm not sharing ANSL's enthusiasm The fact that Zidane is being hailed as the Messiah who will save the French national soccer team is sad. Just shows how low the national team has sunk since its days of glory in 1998 and 2000. It will take Zidane - as great as he is - plus a miracle to carry the team through the next World Cup! If it qualifies....
  15. Saw that JC has a report from Lucky Thompson's son Darryl that his father died on Saturday in Seattle. He was 81 and had suffered from Alzheimer's disease for several years. A true giant disappears. Lucky Thompson's last years seem to have been so sad that news of his death comes as some kind of relief! What a sad day! I'll treasure the wonderful memories I have of him and his talent from the times I caught him live and at the top of his art when he appeared with Oscar Pettiford at the Chat Qui Peche club in Paris in 1959.
  16. ...and still not a word on the Erroll Garner Columbia box project
  17. Bet he is out there somewhere reading mighty interesting books! Hope he is all right! He'll be welcome back!
  18. The article on this historic release is out in The New York Times today. http://www.nytimes.com/2005/07/31/arts/music/31kapl.html?
  19. Another good bass player goes away! Very sad news. His playing anchored quite a number of classic sessions!
  20. Conrad, your mother was a very brave person. She would be very proud of her son's tribute to her! My thoughts are with you and your family in those very difficult days.
  21. Hope you're having a great one! Happy Birthday Gary

  23. Monk was in the studio - but not as a musician - when Art Taylor (with Donald Byrd, Jackie McLean, Charlie Rouse, Ray Bryant and Wendell Marshall) recorded 'Well You Needn't' and 'Off Minor' for his Prestige album 'Taylor's Wailers' in February 1957.
  24. Mais oui, bien sur! Checked the original CD issue of 'Tilt' which did not have those two
  25. Wilen's album 'Tilt' was recorded in two sessions in January 1957. The first session had no Monk tunes. The second one (with Jackie Cnudde on piano) was an all-Monk session. The Monk tunes recorded at that session were 'Hackensack', 'Blue Monk', 'Mysterioso' and 'Think Of one'.
