  1. Got the Fresh Sound release of the 'Art Pepper - Omega Session'. I passed on the Mosaic Select since I already had the BN Japan 1988 reissues of the material. The Fresh Sound CD includes the two unreleased bonus tracks (nice and fun Pepper gets into a Louis Jordan mood) but note the alternate tracks from the session. They also have a 24-page booklet which details Pepper's activities at the time of the Omega date with a number of excellent photos (including one of Pepper with The Rhythm Section at the Contemporary session). It also indicates the Omega album was recorded in two days (April 1 and 2, 1957) and not in one as previously thought (and still indicated in the Mosaic Select reissue).

    Bennie Green

You'll have problems getting Bennie Green vinyls these days. Some recommended non-BN sessions: - Bennie Green on Time records, with Jimmy Forrest and Sonny Clark, - Glidin' Along on Jazzland with Johnny Griffin. But I'm not really sure the vinyl reissues are any better than the CD releases.
  7. Lionel Hampton 'Le Fabuleux Lionel Hampton et ses Virtuoses' (Guilde du Jazz', fabulous session with Les Virtuoses Ray Copeland, Jimmy Cleveland, Lucky Thompson, Oscard Dennard, Oscar Pettiford, Gus Johnson. Still waiting for Fresh Sound (or any willing label) to reissue the full session!

  10. Why? (or are you being facetious? ) ← I'm rather serious! I have a lot of items on my TO BUY radar! Too many, in fact I'll probably be passing the Slack Select! Unless some of the people here whose opinion I trust prove me I'm in error
  11. I'll need a lot of persuasion to purchase that Freddie Slack!
  12. And the Euro is on the way down against the US dollar. Already lost about ten percent in the past few weeks and this should just be the start of a further downfall. I blame France and the Netherlands for this
  13. Diz and Bird met in 1941 when Gillespie came through Kansas City with the Cab Calloway Orchestra. Parker was with Jay McShann's band at the time. Fellow McShann musicians Buddy Anderson and Orville Minor introduced Gillespie to Parker. Diz and Bird were together from December 1942 when they both were in Earl Hines's band. The two were with Hines for several months. A tragedy that the Hines aggregation was never recorded during their association because of the record ban. About their friendship, Gillespie is quoted in Bob Reisner's book 'Bird: The Legend of Charlie Parker':
  14. Hope they reissue more worthy stuff. My concern right now is that they seem to think that Herb Albert is a jazz musician!

  16. Actually, our man on alto is the late, great Robin Kenyatta. ← My brain suffered scratch damage. Kenyatta it was indeed!
  17. Brandon, this may be what you are looking for: http://ronpenndorf.com/labelography.html
  18. Could be... the engineer has a Dutch name (Rudie van Lieshout) - maybe this was initially a radio recording? ← This was originally issued on Dutch Riverside and also on French Riverside. With the same cover. The two Riverside operations were part of the Interdisc company. Both versions are pretty rare indeed!
  19. Roswell Rudd 'Everywhere' - with Giuseppi Logan, Byard Lancaster, etc... -(Impulse orange label)
  20. oops! I hereby apologise for bothering folks with multiple messages... ← Yes, please! Same here! I sent several messages repeatedly until I noticed the messages had to be marked to be stored in the sent items folder!
  21. The back covers of the two Portuguese LPs (Ivory 3000/3001) I have indicate these were 'limited edition - only for collectors'. Pretty good stuff but not right up to the brillance of the two Paris concerts recorded a couple of weeks later at the Espace Cardin and released on Elektra Musician. Never saw vol. 3 and unaware of further volumes...

June 1: 1956 - Gil Melle Quartet (Joe Cinderella, Bill Phipps, Edmund Thigpen) record session for Prestige (Melle Plays Primitive Modern) 1959 - Thelonious Monk (Thad Jones, Charlie Rouse, Sam Jones, Art Taylor) first of several record sessions for Riverside (5 by Monk by 5) 1960 (also June 3) - Al Cohn/Zoot Sims Quintet (Mose Allison, Major Holley, Osie Johnson) record session for Mercury (You 'n Me) 1960 - Joyce Collins Trio (Ray Brown, Frank Butler) record session for Jazzland (Girl Here Plays Mean Piano)
  23. 'Turn On The Heat - The Fats Waller Piano Solos', a 2CD release from Bluebird, is the one to get. But I'm not sure it's still available. It has the 40 solos Fats Waller recorded for RCA Victor.
  24. Francis Davis - who has friends and enemies here - has this article in the Jazz Supplement of the Village Voice this week.
