Ahmed Abdul-Malik is an excellent recommendation! Couple more albums worth seeking (there are others): - Jazz Sahara (with Johnny Griffin) on Riverside, reissued on the OJC series, - East Meets West (with Lee Morgan, Curtis Fuller, Griffin, etc..) on RCA, reissued on vinyl and NOT TO BE MISSED: - Roswell Rudd 'MaliCool'. Details at: http://www.rootsworld.com/reviews/malicool.shtml

Discovery reissued 'Manne - That's Gershwin' as a vinyl back in 1984. Never saw the Capitol vinyl but got hold of the reissue which - as most Discovery items - was beautifully remastered.

You've got every right to be confused about those 'No Room For Squares' issues. The original vinyl (BN 4149) had tracks from two sessions: a session with Lee Morgan, Andrew Hill, John Ore, Philly Joe Jones: - Three Way Split/Carolyn/No Room For Squares/Me 'n You another Mobley session with Donald Byrd, Herbie Hancock, Buth Warren, Philly Joe Jones: - Up a Step/Old World, New Imports When the material was reissued on CD, the complete material from the sessions of it was incorporated on the following CDs: - No Room for Squares, - The Turnaroud, - Straight No Filter All three are very worthy purchases. Good luck and enjoy the music!

Kinuta is awfully right! So much better stuff from Oliver Nelson elsewhere...

So it's not the Contemporary version (the original one!) but the Capitol. There's great music on that album. Got my copy a long time ago. A freebie from Fred C. at the Jazz Record Center during one of my first visit - when it was still at its earlier adress - there. We did some trades. Or to put in different words, after he finished his business with me I have learned better since!

I have the paper edition (all 26 volumes, plus). Use it constantly. Think it's the best job of its kind. Now let me run to the shelters before the bombs fly away!
-
It does?? Not mine(both stereo and mono). It has the 8 like the K2. ← My vinyl copy is an original (1956 copyright). It has eight tracks only.

The Blue Note club in Paris still exists on the Rue d'Artois. No name there. The jazz club turned into a very private sex club a couple of decades ago and ran into trouble with the Law. The Club Saint-German at Saint-Germain des Pres is still there but there is very little jazz of interest being played now. The Chat Qui Peche on the Rue de la Huchette is a Greek restaurant nowadays It's been that way since the club manager (the amazing Madame Richard) passed away too many years ago!

The Woody Shaw CDs grabbed my attention when RT's discs reached home. Now that I have given the BT 1 some listening, here are first impressions. I will be going back to some of the tracks which I still would like to identify. An excellent BFT disc... 1/2 Introduction music that sounds as being played by the same pianist. There is the Debby waltz, could that be Gulda having some fun? 3 Have conflicting opinions on that one. When I gave this a quick hearing thought it might by Jeremy Pelt but it's not. Wynton? RT wouldn't dare... 4 I'm starting to like the compilation. Freedom Jazz Dance by a Rousish tenor sax. 5 The tenorsax player gave it away but I had to search throroughly to get to the truth. Track 7 from this one: http://www.moviegrooves.co.uk/shop/blowup.htm I'm not a big fan of the movie and have not returned to its soundtrack but this tune was one of the hits of the soundtrack. 6 Sounds so much like music from the 70s which I never really got into. There were several albums from the era that I tried to like (from the other Henderson to Norman Connors through post-Mwandish Herbies). I have not felt the urge to return to any of them since I stored them away. 7/8/9 I like those ones and want to explore the music again. Some very interesting trumpet players there. 10A kirkish interlude? But where is Rashaan? 11This sounded familiar but I had to relisten to it to make sure who the trumpet player was and then it made sense. A group I heard on several occasions when they played over here but only a couple of times with the trumpet player. Always thought the piano player was underrecorded on the instrument! Track 7 from this album! http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&t...10:dikmikbkbb79 12 I like that piano track! The different rhythms and moods. Don't remember hearing this before. Will return to that one. 13 More Woody Shaw? Whoever play on that one get votes from here. Will be looking for the album when the results will be in. 14 Jackie McLean plus guitar? Could not figure that! Sounded pretty good but had to look beyong Jackie. Checked elsewhere and came up with this. Excellent composition from the leader which I have on a Swiss live album. Opening track from this album: http://shopping.yahoo.com/p:Watch%20Out:19...HNlYwNhcnRmZWF0 15 Great selection! And a some what difficult one to locate after I made sure who the tenor player was. Track 7 from this hard to find album: http://shopping.yahoo.com/p:Lazuli:1921127...HNsawNtdXNpYw-- 16 This ends strong. Lots of inspired trumpet playing throughout that disc 1. Rooster obviously got fun out of choosing the various selections for this compilation. I liked what he came up with even if a couple of the tunes did not move me but they roused my interest. Deep thanks!

I'll keep my JVC and store it in my car's compacts box. Driving to the sound of the 1940 Ellington band is really a dream come true! I was intending to sell that JVC at an outrageous price to King Ubu (hell, he is Swiss!) but Bentsy beat me to it with his box -

"Jazz in Postwar French Cinema" on Night Lights

Will make sure not to miss that one when it gets archived! What, no soundtrack music by Kenny Dorham (Un Temoin Dans La Ville)? -
Actually (pun intended!) there was an Archie Shepp twofer vinyl. That was Double Actuel 203 and had 'Yasmina, a Black Woman' and 'Live at the Panafrican Festival'! There were a couple of other Double LP from the Actuel series (including a Sun Ra) in the early '70s.

I remember reading that Balliett review of the Town Hall concert. Could not understand why this fine writer did not like it. I spent a number of hours listening to the album when it came out. The cover shot - by Jack Manning - made me feel like being inside Town Hall and attending the concert! Still get joy out of listening to it. Superb legit release. But I love the bootlegs too and all the unknown music that comes with them!
