  1. The 1932 Scarface is a mustsee film. Brutal and visually effective. Produced by Howard Hughes and directed Howard Hawks. They don't come better. Enjoy your evening!
  2. A couple of Marcello Melis Black Saint: - 'The New Village on the Left' with Enrico Rava, Roswell Rudd, Don Moye and the Gruppo Rubanu (Sardinian vocals) - 'Free to Dance' with Sheila Jordan, Lester Bowie, George Lewis and Melis on the left channel, and Jeanne Lee, Enrico Rava, Gary Valente and Fred Hopkins on the right! Beautiful!
  3. I like Juliette Greco. The singer, the actress, the woman. But I would shy away from getting an 18-CD box of her songs. That box is mainly for fanatics. Her autobiography 'Jujube' was on the best-sellers list in France when it was published in 1993. And what a life she has lived! Even Jean-Paul Sartre wrote a tune for her 'Dans la Rue des Blancs Manteaux' with music by Joseph Kosma! The photo of her with Miles Davis that Bentsy posted was taken shortly before she had a nose job done. That nose job was national news at the time!

    Carla Bley

Annette Peacock was touring Italia earlier this year. Here is a website dedicated to her: http://www.imtheone.net/annettepeacock/intro.html
  5. Brownie, I live in Indianapolis and know Duncan. He has also loaned me images on occassion for projects I have done.....nice guy and good photographer! Thanks for the article. Mark Sheldon, next time you see him tell him I am a big fan of his latest book 'Jazz In Black and White' (Indiana University Press). Great photos, great stories!

    Joe Maini

This thread is for fans of Joe Maini. And all I see is a discussion on one photo. Is that all that Maini was about
  8. A real photographer's perspective on the Frank Driggs story. From today's The Indianapolis Star:
  9. Many thanks for reminiscing, Christern! Even if it's a very sad story! I'll stick to the Donald Clark book. Thought it was one of the best biographies in the jazz field.
  10. Saturday March 12 will mark the 50th anniversary of Charlie Parker's passing away!
  11. I'll be waiting for the DeLuxe edition (with the alternate takes) from the Sony people B-)
  12. 1941 - Benny Goodman and his Orchestra record session for Columbia (Solo Flight) 1949 - Dinah Washington record session for Mercury (How Deep Is The Ocean...) 1958 - Cannonball Adderley and his quintet record session for Mercury (the 'Sharpshooters' album)

    Henri Texier

Bev, the title of that album is 'Carnet de Routes' not Le Querrec. Le Querrec is that great photographer Guy Le Querrec who was the official fourth member of the group during its travels thru Africa. He was playing with his cameras. Did another great job of his!
  14. Lot of great memories from half a century of clubs and concerts dates. Some of the best: - Miles Davis with Barney Wilen, Bud Powell with Barney Wilen, Kenny Dorham with Barney Wilen at the Club Saint-Germain, - Art Blakey (with Lee Morgan Golson, Timmons), Horace Silver (with Blue Mitchell and Junior Cook), Sonny Rollins (with Henry Grimes and Pete LaRoca) at Club Saint-Germain. I was almost in residence at the Club around 1958-1959 B-) - Lucky Thompson and Oscar Pettiford, Donald Byrd and Bobby Jaspar, Don Cherry and Gato Barbieri at the Chat Qui Peche, - the Count Basie orchestra at London's Royal Albert Hall in 1957, - Billie Holiday at the Olympia in 1958, - the Duke Ellington orchestra at Salle Pleyel in 1959, - Quincy Jones and his orchestra at the Paris Alhambra in 1960, - John Coltrane at the Olympia in 1962, then at Salle Pleyel in 1964 and again in 1965, - Charles Mingus, the two concerts at Salle Wagram and next day at the Theatre des Champs-Elysees in 1964, - Miles Davis (with Shorter) at Salle Pleyel in 1967 and at Antibes in 1969, - Cecil Taylor's Unit with Jimmy Lyons at the Maison de l'ORTF and at the Faculte de Droit in 1966, also CT solo at Amsterdam's Concertgebouw, then again the Unit with Lyons and Sam Rivers at the Maeght foundation, - Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock in Greenwich Village in 1965, - Roland Kirk and Dexter Gordon on the same bill (but not together) at the Theatre de Paris, - Sun Ra at Slug's in 1967, Jackie McLean same place, Booker Ervin in the Village, - Albert Ayler at Salle Pleyel in 1967, - the Art Ensemble of Chicago Paris debut at the Theatre du Lucernaire in 1969, - Zoot Sims and Jimmy Rowles at the Village Vanguard, the Gil Evans Orchestra at the VV and later at Sweet Basil's. - Art Pepper at the Palace in Paris in 1980. How lucky I have been to get interested in the music when all these greats were touring over here! I'm sure Chuck N., Larry K., Christern and some others have seen more!
  15. A very warm welcome to allthatjazznj! This is a great place to indulge a passion for jazz!

    Joe Maini

There are quite a number of fans of this great saxophone player. Not sure they are aware there is a website dedicated to him (with a discography from our own Vincent, Paris). Lots of very interesting photos and memories of Maini. http://www.traversino.com/joe_maini_website/default.htm
  17. Jim, when somebody suddenly gets big money, it is a very common occurence that 'old friends' appear out of the blue in the hope of catching up on the good luck. I had not talked with Marion Brown in a long, long time and I did not want him to sense anything of the kind. I did not go into any specifics about the amount. He confirmed that the settlement had been very good. The sum I mentioned in the other thread has been confirmed by other people I trust!
  18. I have not seen THAT one: http://www.monroemovie.com/ but there is another one which is mentioned at the bottom of the opening page of the site that was shown on French TV a couple of times. (Hope the link will not offend anyone! What is shown is pretty tame!) I prefer Marilyn in films like 'River of No Return' (great combination of MM and Robert Mitchum) and two of Billy Wilder's classics 'The Seven-Year Hitch' and 'Some Like It Hot'. Saw an interview of Wilder a few years ago in which he made it so very clear that MM was a royal pain to work with! Yet she is perfect in those two films when seen on the screen
  19. One more very interesting site you dug up. Many thanks for bringing this one to our attention, MartyJazz. I've watched a couple of interviews and will explore the site in the next few days. I noted this disclaimer: http://www.nypl.org/research/sc/scl/MULTIM...ST/disclaim.htm
  20. No trace of the Duke and the Monk playing together on that Newport 1962 DVD. The DVD was discussed (flamed would be the right word!) here: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...hl=newport+1962
  21. March 3rd: 1941 - Benny Goodman Sextet and Orchestra (with Charlie Christian) on NBC broadcast (Solo Flight) 1951 - Johnny Hodges and his Orchestra record session for Norgran (Castle Rock) 1957 - Clifford Jordan and John Gilmore record session for BN (Blowing In From Chicago) 1961 - Duke Ellington and his Orchestra record session for Columbia ('Tulip or Turnip' ...)
  22. Happy Birthday Johnny
  23. Craig, on another Jazz in Paris thread, posted this link to the new boxes when they came out over here: http://www.universalmusic.fr/servlet/Front...tiste_id=103874 It's in French but you can check what's inside the boxes...
  24. Archie Shepp Fire Music (Impulse, mono original)
  25. I did not want to go into details but he confirmed he had been given a very good financial settlement. The home he is in looks pretty good and staying there must be quite expensive.
