  1. Wait till Christiern catches this Will we be sentenced to a week-long listening session to the Complete Bessie Smith boxes?
  2. Where does the queue line start? I'm next... Yes, please. Let's keep the place clean. No advertisements!!
  3. Just my two cents. Two BN 47W63 I have cherished for years: Blue Train and Somethin' Else. I have the original mono LPs. The sound on those two is everything good engineering should be. No distorsion even on the shrill passages (the trumpet and drums sound all natural). The balance on all instruments is respected. The dynamics grab the listener. There is that perfect feeling of being right there next to the players. I have bought several other versions of these classics on vinyls and CDs and never got this perspective. When I want to enjoy these sessions, I go back to the originals!
  4. I did not catch JSngry's earlier reference to 'Shoe Shine Boy'. That will teach me to not read his posts from start to finish Anyway, it's one of the most perfect three minutes of jazz history!
  5. My thoughts exactly. Maybe we could just set up an automatic withdrawl system using couw's bank account. At the end of the month we can all reimburse him. (or not) The one he keeps in Switzerland?
  6. Lester Young's first session in 1936 with the Jones-Smith Incorporated unit. The original take of the first number played that day 'Shoe Shine Swing' is a masterpiece. The alternate take is also a masterpiece. Lester Young plays variations on his solo from the first take for the alternate. Another masterpiece!
  7. Decisive goal at the very last minute (last second??) by the Greeks. They did not steal their qualification for the final. Greece vs. Portugal in the final. Greece already defeated Portugal in the opening game of the championship!
  8. The Czech players seemed a bit out of steam in the second half. I am impressed by the Greeks, much more than on their previous matches. Still no goals
  9. You're being very harsh for this lively confrontation! I can't deny I was a bit bored... drink more, it helps... Still more coffee?? I'm having my fifth now... and you're still not shaking out off your chair?! good grief! I'm drinking harder stuff. It obviously shows
  10. Nice try, couw. You're almost there
  11. Oh those eastern Europe names
  12. You're being very harsh for this lively confrontation!
  13. A thoroughly enjoyable first half. The Greeks are playing better than I expected from them. No goals yet but I fell some coming... The Czech players are having a hard time but they maintain well so far. Boy, they're going to miss Nedvev...
  14. Second semifinal this evening. I think the Czech Republic team will have but little problems to get to the final. The Greek team has played well so far but, let's face it, they are not in the same league as the Czechs. I hope we will see serious soccer! I nreally look forward to a Czech Republic-Portugal final. No betting on that one for me!
  15. Sal said it exactly. Get these. You'll feel a bit awkward after for having asked if you should get them
  16. Sounds like a line from a Hank Mobley or one of those Jazz Messengers early tunes. But which one???
  17. On the strength of track 13 Nancy Wilson/George Shearing, I bought that 'The Swingin's Mutual' album, a record I have seen (but never heard) many times and never bothered to check. Easy listening jazz like that, I love! And the recent (copy-controlled ) CD I bought says it's Eddie Costa on vibraphone - not Warren Chiasson - throughout. One more reason to dig this one! Always enjoyed George Shearing! Listening to his quintet has always been a very enjoyable experience. The Mosaic Shearing box only strengthened the positive feelings I had for Shearing's music. Too bad, it's no longer available.
  18. The word from the wise! Nobody's forcing anyone to have a look at what's going on around us. The more jazz information becomes available, the better we should all be And with the number of problems that have been plaguing this board lately, the AAJ is a nice place to hang on while waiting for the doors to this place to reopen. Michael Ricci has to be thanked for providing a thread for us at his forum!
  19. I understand now that dinosaurs were roaming some of the areas I walk through
  20. I don´t know if it´s still available, brownie. I´m afraid it isn´t, as some amazon and google research doesn´t bring any results. But I could help, if any of you is happy enough with a CD-R of it! EKE BBB, thanks for the offer but I tend to not bother with CD-R unless I really need to. I'ld rather wait until this album comes up during my shopping hours Beside I have a growing backload of purchased albums I have to listen to...
  21. Have you noticed who´s on drums? B) That critic (and former drummer) who is almost as hated as the trumpet player that irritates so much so many people around here... Please, let's not discuss this right now! I have already commited a major sin today by praising a Wynton Marsalis on another thread. One major sin a day is more than I can already take
  22. I have the 'A Night At Birdland' BN 1521/22. The Blakey/Clifford Brown/Lou Donaldson/Horace Silver/CurlyRussell unit. Volume 2 is 47W63 on both sides. Volume 1 has the Lexington label on side 2 and the 47W63 on side 1! Deep grooves both.
  23. The Village Vanguard box is indeed a good one. It's the only Marsalis recording I have kept. The man can play. Too bad he is wasting his talent.
  24. Agree with the comments on the Paul Bley. I recognised the pianist but could not identify the album. I have rediscovered Bley recently and have re-explored his music. The Owl album is a good one. Should have pinned this one... I bow my head in shame for failing to pin that Roy Eldridge/Chu Berry 'Heckler's Hop' track. I have this on the Mosaic Commodore boxes but it was too much of a task to pull out thoses boxes from the place I have stored them... I pinned the Ornette Coleman 'Song For Che' but not the bootleg this comes from. Don't have that one. Will chase it!
  25. Some surprises! So it was Claude Bolling on the opening track! Good I did not chase on that one because I would not have guessed it. Pleasantly surprised now that I know where the music comes from. Will try to check that one. Same goes for track 3. Not really familiar with later Elvin Jones albums. Track 5, JJ Johnson I had no problem recognising but I did not nail the right disc. Boo on me since I did not bother to check that 'Pinnacles' album. I have that LP and spinned this after it was identified. And enjoyed relistening to it. Track 7 was Paolo Fresu. What I heard was just a confirmation of what I think about this overrated trumpet player. A Miles Davis clone. Who needs this? I'll stick to the real Miles! Track 9. Johnny Dodds I had recognised but I was pretty sure it was Armstrong on cornet. I need to listen to more Natty Dominique... Track 10 Chano Dominguez. Interesting. A new name to me. Track 12 David Murray 'Flowers for Albert'. I should also have recognised this because I was a fan of this musician when he appeared on the scene. I think he never really lived up to his potentials and have not been very happy about this later albums.
