  1. The Verve box 'The Complete Billie Holiday' has on disc 4 a long conversation between Billie and Jimmy Rowles during an August 1955 rehearsal at bass player Artie Shapiro's home. 45 minutes of the tape was originally issued on a Paramount Records LP. That Disc 4 has much more of this. It lasts nearly 80 minutes.
  2. Three goals for the Czech players in seven minutes. Pretty good! The second half was much more lively than the first one! I'll bet on the Czechs now...
  3. I was expecting more from this match. The two teams play as if they were watching each other. The Czech Republic players seem overwhelmed by the Danes who seem to forget that you need goals tyo win. We want goals! not penalties!
  4. Yep. When Marion Brown came to Paris in 1967. Top one was shot on the Champs-Elysees avenue (it does not show but it was there) and the bottom one at a concert at the Paris American Center.
  5. My Riverside LP of George Russell's 'Stratusphunk' has indeed liner notes by Chris Albertson
  6. I also wrote liner notes for the very first Ray Charles record to be published in France - back in 1958 - by Ray Charles. An EP that came out on the Versailles label that was managed by Sacha Distel. Distel - who liked the music - was not very enthusiastic about having it released. He quickly changed his mind after the initial sales reports. I also wrote notes for a Charlie Parker record that had the Jay McShann with Bird sides for Decca. My names was also was mentioned in French LP releases of albums by Charlie Parker and John Coltrane, among others.
  7. Came upon that CD I heard about. It's listed in the Barney Wilen discographies. It's not even listed in AMG: Jacques Pelzer 'Never Let Me Go' (Igloo) Pelzer is the saxophonist who is a central figure in the Belgian jazz scene. He is often mentioned i-for various reasons - in James Gavin's biography of Chet Baker 'Deep In A Dream' as is his daughter Micheline who plays drums throughout the session. Barney Wilen is featured on soprano and tenor - in four of the ten selections - and plays masterfully as usual. Pelzer is not bad at all. A Benny Carter inspired player, he sounds much better here than on several occasions I heard him live!
  8. Lookout! I know what you're saying. And, I agree to a point. There are many more posts that don't give thanks than those that do. But, some of us are trying to remember to be considerate and appreciative while using the AAJ site. wesbed gives a form of 'thanks' to AAJ Brad gives a form of 'thanks' to AAJ 7/4 gives a form of 'thanks' to AAJ JSngry gives a form of 'thanks' to AAJ In addition to some well-meaning threads I started at AAJ about the Django Mosaic, the Elvin Jones Mosaic, and my Saturday Morning Breakfast. It should not be Organissimo versus AAJ. Rather, Organissimo and AAJ versus the world. There aren't many 'good' jazz discussion boards that I can find on the internet. Three or four? Maybe five or six at the most? We need 'all' the jazz boards to do well. Agree with this. I also posted thanks: http://forums.allaboutjazz.com/showthread....44619#post44619 Organissimo is my forum of choice. I wish I had more time to post more at AAJ. I do when I have time and have something to contribute to the threads there...
  9. Clem has repeadtly referred to Oulipo. He happens to read good books. Notably the Georges Perec ones...

  11. I shot the (credited) photo of Marion Brown for that ESP album: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&u...l=Aoysqoarayijp Also the back cover photo and the photo on both sides of the label on the original ESP LP release
  12. From the clothes the musicians have, this MUST be from the sixties.
  13. The Swedish team did not deserve to lose but it was nice to have Holland get into the semifinals on penalty shoots which had the team eliminated from the last three European championships.
  14. Here' a link - nice site that is! Thanks Mike for providing a link to the site. A fascinating one. Had never heard of Willie Anderson before. Sounds like a major unheard musician. There is a mention in the article that Uptown is going to publish a CD compilation 'Detroit Jazz Before Motown 1945-53' where he and other Detroit jazz greats will be heard in rare and previously unissued recordings. Could Chuck advise when this is scheduled to be published? This looks like another Uptown to purchase. Also there is a photo of Willie Anderson with Stan Kenton musicians in Detroit in February 1948 in that article. The unidentified trombone player has to be Kai Winding!
  15. 0-0. Going into extra time. We want GOALS
  16. The Swedes are on the war path. Thought the Dutch would play better. Not a bad match but where are the goals?
  17. I expect much better things out of this one than yesterday's Greece vs. France. Should be very enjoyable! No favorite here. May the best team win...
  18. Sam Rivers (and his wife Bea) also ran Studio Rivbea in the SoHo area in the '70s. It was a major gathering place for the practicioners of the new music. Went there a number of times when I visited New York at the time. Heard great music there!
  19. Kenton Presents, Disc III (The Frank Rosolino sides)

    Funny Rat

Sheila Jordan's rendition of 'You Are My Sunshine' on the George Russell 'The Outer View' Riverside album is also one of the great moments in jazz vocal history!
  21. Nice to know! I always wonder who the soloist on that disc are when listening, as there's no identification at hand, I don't know most of the musicians involved. Do you happen to know if Byard can be heard in solo? I don't have anything else where he's on saxophone. ubu
  22. The Herb Pomeroy Orchestra 'Life Is a Many Splendored Thing' (Roulette)
  23. Masters of Jazz published a volume 8 in their Lunceford series. It brought the Lunceford sides complete up to April 1941. Mastering on that one was done by John R.T. Davies.

    Guy Lafitte

Currently reading 'Comme Si C'etait le Printemps' (As It Was Spring', a book - in French - that was published last year by friends of Guy Lafitte that reunites various writings and notes by Lafitte. A 120-page autobiography by the saxophone player, the book was published by 'ArtMedia Editions'. Very nice volume with good illustrations and a discography.
  25. One last note about (I hope) about last evening's match. Things did not look right even before the game started. During the playing of national anthems, the whole Greek team sand along with their anthem. THEY wanted victory. The French players - with one of two exceptions - just stood mute and waited for this to be over. End of it. No point looking back. Let's hope for better things from a redesigned French team...
