Oh Brother! Wonder where my mind was when I posted...

Solo act: Navratilova, 47, wins at Wimbledon

I resent those insinuations about us veterans. Don't call us OLD, call us vintage! It's like wine: the older, the better Go, Martina, go! -
Artists Who Should Have Had a Mosaic...
brownie replied to Leeway's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Oh yes, there is love for it! That band just plain rocked! Someone else from the same era that is taken for granted IMO is Benny Carter! How about a set of his late 20's thru Europe in the 30's??? Lets face it a fair number here don't dig into the early days of jazz, unless it is a mosaic.... The lamented Masters of Jazz label from France had both Benny Carter and Jimmie Lunceford series in their releases. The Lunceford series went to volume 7 at least and reached the year 1940 to include all the pre-1940 Decca sides. The Carters series reached vol. 9 up to 1939. And their CDs were complete and pretty well remastered. -
Who's the greatest innovator in jazz today?
brownie replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Cecil Taylor. End of discussion! -
If you have to have only one Slide Hamption, get the 'Silver Salvation' album that came out on Atlantic. It's been reissued on Collectables. Beautiful album with solos by Freddie Hubbard and George Coleman among others.

I'm in! E-mailed you.

I have listened to that bonus disc just once. Will tune in again. It reflects on Agustin's broad scope and good taste! Very nice one. Found only a few. Track 2 was easy with a favorite pianist and a distinctive ducal tenor. Opening track from this album: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&u...l=Ags5gtq2zbu46 Track 4 was easy too. One of the very rare solo from a Giant. It's the first two sides from this Italian bootleg that I bought years ago: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&u...l=Anq6ibkk9hakx Track 6 was instantly recognizable with a great trumpet player on a weak session playing 'Woodyn' You': http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&u...l=Aea1gtq1zbu46 Track 8 a live version of 'Song For Che' with the composer nicely featured. Don't have that version with Ornette plus Dewey (?) and Blackwell (?). A bootleg? Have only guesses for some others: - Bill Coleman on track 8? not sure about that with a tenor sounding like the Giant soloing on track 4?, probably recorded in Paris, - nice jam on track 9 with players including Benny Carter, - is that Paul Bley playing solo on track 10? Will have to relisten to the full disc. It's going to be a pleasure!

What Would Like To Listen to While You Die?
brownie replied to Alexander's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I don't believe in afterlife but... ...some Lester Young music will take me right up to Heaven! And, please, as late and as peacefully as possible! -
If this is pointed in my direction, I must confess I was searching for a fuller Belgian connection! Rene Thomas I had figured out but I was also thinking Bobby Jaspar and spent too much (but very enjoyable time) relistening to the records from that glorious team. Did not get to the album that Jim identified in time. Besides how can we figure out those Blindfold Tests when we have Eurosoccer going on?

Trouble ahead for Lance Armstrong
brownie replied to brownie's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Lance Armstrong's attempt at rebuttal has been rejected by a Paris court. From AP: -
Marcus, just remember the French disaster at the 2002 World Cup when the team that won the 1998 Cup was out by the first round without having scored a single goal! As for Silvestre, he is not that bad a player but after helping the opposite teams score in each of the three first first matches he played, he should be out of the Bleus for the duration! And Santini has announced just before the start of Euro2004 that he would no longer be the team coach right after the French last match in the tournament. He will head for Tottenham next season. Santini is the latest in a succession of inept coaches. We have not had a decent coach since Michel Hidalgo. Aime Jaquet was just lucky to have the top players available. At least he made good use of them. Then Roger Lemerre was a disaster.

Will wait for the Mosaic Select of this

The Definitive, Jazz Factory etc. quality check
brownie replied to neveronfriday's topic in Re-issues
Deus, that one is a very legitimate issue. Fresh Sounds had access to and worked from the original material. Excellent box indeed that comes with a great booklet. As for the Basie material from Disconforme, I have kept away from getting those and stick to the LP Basie collection I have. Being an incurable optimist, I am still waiting for Mosaic to do the Basie Columbia sides right! Like they did for the Chet Baker and Gerry Mulligan boxes that Definitive is cloning. But I may fall for the Brookmeyer (how amusing the transformation of Stan Getz sides to Bob Brookmeyer ones). Verve can complain all they want now, THEY should have reissued these sides a long time ago! -
England-Portugal will be one match to watch!

Artists Who Should Have Had a Mosaic...
brownie replied to Leeway's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I've been hoping for that for a long, long time! -
Thierry Henry scored twice in the second half for a 3-1 victory that qualifies France into the quarterfinals. They will oppose Greece next. The French team has progress to make. Hope they will not be too tired for the next match(es)...
-
The Swiss prove to be tough competitors. Hope the French will play better in the second half! Thierry Henry has yet to score for France in this tournament
-
tell that to all the people who study with mister Wonneberg... He's a genyooine professor now at the Hanns Eisler School for Music in Berlin. Teaches ensemble/arrangement and history. Nothing against Alfons (it's better than Adolf) but it just is not a jazz name. Now Alphonse is cool (long live Picou wherever he may be!)

Happy Birthday, Rainy Day (May 21 - June 21)
brownie replied to maren's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I was sure I had posted a Happy Birthday, Rainy Day note couple of days ago. It obviously did not go anywhere since I can't find it now. And since this is still June 21, here goes: HAPPY BIRTHDAY, RAINY DAY Hope you had a great day, whenever your birthday was... -
Alphonso is OK. Alfons is BAD!
-
Yes, after posting this I remembered I had purchased the Columbia/Sony CD because it has those additional tracks. Love that disc!
-
Have to leave some fun to the other participants B) you call that fun?! I've been eating myself over these tracks Sure, it's fun. And you get a jazz education at the same time. Better listen to that BFT 13 rather than your Alfons Wonneberg stoopid music. One should stay away from any musician going by the name of Alfons

Couw, the brother of the trumpet player that irritates so much so many people around here is the player on that tune. He is more interesting than his brother but his solo falls well beyond the composer's one on the original session.
